The Divine Story of Dhanteras

A Sacred Tale of Life and Prosperity
Om Shri Dhanvantaraye Namah
The Auspicious Beginning
On the blessed Trayodashi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik, when the celestial realms shimmer with divine grace, we celebrate Dhanteras โ the sacred day that marks the beginning of Diwali festivities. This is not merely a day of material wealth, but a profound celebration of life, health, and divine blessing.
The Emergence of Lord Dhanvantari
In the ancient times, when the Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) churned the cosmic ocean โ the great Samudra Manthan โ fourteen precious treasures emerged from the celestial waters. On this very day of Dhanteras, Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician and father of Ayurveda, manifested from the ocean depths.
With radiant splendor, he appeared holding a golden pot filled with Amrit โ the nectar of immortality. His four hands carried the symbols of healing: the Shankha (conch), Chakra (discus), Jalauka (leech), and the pot of Amrit. His emergence brought the gift of health and longevity to all creation.
Lord Dhanvantari is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu himself, descended to free humanity from disease and suffering. His appearance on this day makes Dhanteras eternally auspicious for seeking health, prosperity, and divine grace.
The Legend of King Hima’s Son
There exists another beautiful tale woven into the sacred fabric of Dhanteras โ the story of King Hima’s beloved son.
According to his horoscope, the young prince was destined to die from a serpent bite on the fourth day of his marriage. His devoted bride, determined to save her husband, devised a plan born of pure love and unwavering faith.
On that fateful night, she gathered all the gold ornaments and coins from the palace and arranged them in a magnificent heap at the entrance of their chamber. She lit countless oil lamps, their flames dancing like stars brought down to earth. Throughout the night, she sang devotional songs and recited sacred verses with such devotion that sleep dared not approach.
When Yama, the God of Death, arrived in the form of a serpent, he was blinded by the brilliance of the gold and the divine light of the lamps. Mesmerized by the princess’s melodious hymns and unable to enter the chamber, he spent the entire night sitting atop the heap of gold, listening to her devotional singing.
As dawn broke, Yama quietly departed, and the prince’s life was spared. The young bride’s devotion, symbolized by the gold, lamps, and prayers, had conquered death itself.
Since that divine intervention, this day is celebrated as Yamadeepdan โ when lamps are lit to ward off untimely death and invoke blessings of longevity.
The Sacred Significance of Dhanteras
“Dhan” means wealth, and “Teras” signifies the thirteenth day. But the wealth spoken of here transcends mere material riches. It encompasses:
- Arogya Dhanย โ The wealth of good health
