Massive Blow to JeM: Masood Azhar’s Madrasa Destroyed in Bahawalpur Strike

Bahawalpur, Pakistan: In a daring and precise military strike under Operation Sindoor, Indian Armed Forces have razed a key madrasa linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar in Bahawalpur, Punjab, Pakistan. The coordinated missile assault — involving four high-precision strikes — has eliminated at least 17 terrorists, delivering a crippling blow to the UN-designated terror group notorious for attacks on Indian soil.

The strike has triggered widespread panic in Bahawalpur, with local mosques evacuated and the city’s security apparatus on high alert.

A Surgical Blow to JeM’s Heartland

As per multiple social media posts and Pakistani media sources, the madrasa — which served as JeM’s headquarters and a primary recruitment and training center — was reduced to rubble in the early hours of May 7. Located strategically near Pakistan’s National Highway 5, the facility was infamous for indoctrination activities and training jihadis.

Residents in a 20-kilometer radius reported deafening blasts, with windows shattering and tremors felt across neighborhoods. Despite being on partial alert for four days due to fear of an Indian retaliation, the madrasa could not withstand the precision of Indian missile technology.

Masood Azhar: The Architect of Terror

Masood Azhar has remained a persistent threat since his release in the 1999 Indian Airlines IC-814 hijacking incident. Exchanged along with two other terrorists, Azhar went on to form JeM in 2000 with support from Pakistan’s ISI, the Taliban, and al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

JeM has claimed responsibility for numerous heinous attacks, including:

  • The 2001 Indian Parliament attack
  • The 2016 Pathankot airbase attack
  • The 2016 Uri military camp attack
  • The 2019 Pulwama suicide bombing, which killed 40 CRPF personnel

The Bahawalpur madrasa functioned as Azhar’s nerve center — a symbol of his ideological and operational control over JeM.

Operation Sindoor: India’s Resolute Strike Back

The Bahawalpur strike is part of the broader Operation Sindoor, launched in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 civilians, mostly Hindu tourists, dead. The assault, claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar-e-Taiba proxy, sparked outrage nationwide.

In a coordinated tri-services operation, India targeted nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). JeM’s Bahawalpur stronghold and LeT’s Muridke base were top on the hit list.

The strikes were executed with state-of-the-art missile and drone systems, ensuring precision and avoiding civilian casualties — a feat lauded globally as a benchmark in surgical counter-terrorism operations.

Panic Grips Bahawalpur

Following the strikes, the atmosphere in Bahawalpur turned chaotic. The proximity of the madrasa — just 8 km from a Pakistani military cantonment — raised troubling questions about Islamabad’s continued patronage of terrorist entities.

While Pakistani state media played down the damage, eyewitness accounts on X (formerly Twitter) told a different story. One post read:

“Masood Azhar’s headquarters in Bahawalpur no longer exists — Operation Sindoor has wiped it off the map.”

Mosques in the surrounding areas were evacuated as a precaution, and Pakistani forces were seen increasing patrols and sealing off key routes.

Nationwide Unity and Global Backing

Across India, political leaders and citizens expressed pride and solidarity. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi tweeted:

“We welcome the targeted strikes on terror bases. Pakistan’s deep state must be made accountable — so that another Pahalgam never happens. Jai Hind!”

Other leaders like Priyanka Chaturvedi (Shiv Sena UBT) and Tejashwi Yadav (RJD) echoed similar sentiments, appreciating the armed forces and PM Modi’s decisive leadership.

Internationally, India’s operation has reignited scrutiny over Pakistan’s duplicity in sheltering terrorists. The Ministry of External Affairs dismissed Islamabad’s denial of Azhar’s presence as “a sham,” and reiterated demands for his immediate handover.
