Vaishakha Masa 2026: Complete Significance, Story from Skanda Purana & Vishnu Worship Guide

Vaishakha Masa 2026:

Vaishakha Masa (also spelled Vaisakha or Baisakh) is one of the most sacred months in the Hindu lunar calendar. In the North Indian Purnimanta system (followed in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, etc.), Vaishakha masa typically begins around April 3, 2026 (after Chaitra Purnima) and continues through May.

This holy month is considered especially dear to Lord Vishnu (also known as Madhusudana or Madhava). It is regarded as the essence of dharma, yajna, noble deeds, and tapasya. Bathing in holy rivers like the Ganga and Yamuna before sunrise, performing charity (daan), and daily temple visits or Vishnu puja in Vaishakha yield immense punya (spiritual merit) that cannot be easily described.

According to scriptures, Vaishakha has the power to destroy sins of past births, liberate the soul from worldly bondage, and grant the four purusharthas — dharma, artha, kama, and moksha.

The Complete Legendary Story of Vaishakha Masa Mahatmya (from Skanda Purana)

The greatness of Vaishakha Masa is beautifully narrated in the Skanda Purana (Vaisakha Mahatmya section). Sage Narada once approached Lord Brahma to understand which month is supreme. Brahma declared that Vaishakha Masa fulfills all desires of human beings just as a loving mother fulfills the needs of her children. It is the most virtue-prone (Dharma Sadhaka) month and is supremely dear to Lord Vishnu.

To illustrate its power, the Purana recounts the inspiring story of King Kirtiman of Kashipura (Kashi):

One day, while hunting in the forest, King Kirtiman visited the ashram of Sage Vashistha. He noticed the sage’s disciples selflessly offering shade with umbrellas, fruits, cool drinks, and rest to weary travelers — including ordinary people and even kings — without any distinction. Curious, the king asked why they were doing this service so devotedly.

Sage Vashistha explained the mahatmya (greatness) of Vaishakha Masa: how holy bathing (snaan) before sunrise, charity of water, food, and clothes, daily Vishnu puja, and observance of dharma in this month destroy sins and grant immense blessings.

Inspired, King Kirtiman returned to his kingdom and implemented these teachings on a massive scale. He ordered the construction of rest houses (chhatras), planting of trees for shade, supply of cool water, food, and fruits to travelers and the needy — especially Brahmanas. He launched a kingdom-wide campaign to spread awareness about Vaishakha observances: early morning bathing, daan (charity), family pujas, and strict adherence to righteous living.

The result was miraculous. Deaths in the kingdom drastically reduced during Vaishakha. Those who did pass away attained direct entry to Vaikuntha (Lord Vishnu’s abode). There was hardly any difference between heaven and earth in his realm.

Disturbed by this, Lord Yamaraja (the god of death) approached Lord Brahma, complaining that the cycle of birth and death was disrupted — even sinners were going straight to Vaikuntha!

Brahma and Yama then went to the Ksheera Sagara (Ocean of Milk), where Lord Vishnu resides. Smiling compassionately, Lord Vishnu replied:

“I would rather abandon My Srivatsa mark, Kaustubha jewel, Vijayanti mala, Sweta Dwipa, Vaikuntha, Ksheera Sagara, Shesha Naga, Garuda, or even Devi Lakshmi Herself — but I will never abandon My devotee King Kirtiman who is observing the mahatmya of Vaishakha Masa.”

Vishnu declared that He wished to multiply such virtuous kings and grant them long lives. He warned Yamaraja not to interfere with devotees observing Vaishakha dharma. However, to appease Yama, Vishnu suggested a special ritual: In the first half of Vaishakha (before Purnima), devotees should perform a special puja to Yamaraja and offer daan of a potful of water, curd, and anna (rice/food grains).

Only after this should one proceed with pitru puja, guru puja, and Vishnu worship, offering cool water, curd, fruits, betel leaves, dakshina, a copper vessel, and an idol of Maha Vishnu to Brahmanas.

King Kirtiman eventually had direct darshan of Lord Vishnu and attained Sayujya (oneness with the divine). This story beautifully shows how sincere observance of Vaishakha Masa pleases Lord Vishnu immensely and overrides even the laws of death.

Why Vaishakha Masa is Supreme for Vishnu Worship

  • Dearest to Vishnu: Among Kartika, Magha, and Vaishakha — the three highly auspicious months — Vaishakha is considered the greatest. Lord Vishnu (as Madhusudana, slayer of demon Madhu) is especially worshipped in this month.
  • Holy Bathing (Vaishakha Snana): Bathing in sacred rivers (Ganga, Yamuna, or any holy water) before sunrise in Vaishakha is equivalent to performing all yajnas and austerities. It destroys sins and grants merits that are hard to attain otherwise.
  • Charity (Daan): Giving water, food, clothes, umbrellas, or copper vessels yields inexhaustible punya. Water daan is especially praised — there is “no charity like that of water.”
  • Daily Practices: Vishnu puja, reading Vishnu Purana or Bhagavatam, fasting on Ekadashis (Varuthini and Mohini in April 2026), and observing compassion and truthfulness multiply blessings.
  • Comparison of Merit: Bathing in other months gives limited benefit, but Vaishakha Snana grants limitless punya.

In North India, Vaishakha also aligns with the harvest season (Baisakhi around April 14), symbolizing prosperity and new beginnings.
