Getting There

How to Reach

By Air

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) — 45 km

By Rail

Los Angeles Union Station

55 km
By Road

Calabasas Metro / Amtrak Thruway stops

The Malibu Hindu Temple lies at the western edge of the San Fernando Valley, 45 km from LAX and just off Highway 101. The location, while called "Malibu" in the temple’s popular name, is administratively in Calabasas — a short drive from the Pacific Coast Highway and the Santa Monica mountains hiking trails. Free parking is available but fills quickly on Saturdays and festival days.

By air: LAX is the primary gateway (45 km, 45–60 min drive depending on traffic). Bob Hope Airport Burbank (BUR) is only 30 km. By car: From LA take US-101 N to Exit 29 (Las Virgenes / Malibu Canyon Road) and drive 8 km south — the temple is on the right. From San Fernando Valley, take PCH then Malibu Canyon Road. By Metro: Orange Line to Warner Center, then rideshare (30 min). Rideshare from Downtown LA is $45–$65.

Planning tip: Malibu's fame has made it a target for weekend day-trippers and location seekers; Saturdays between 11 AM and 3 PM are the temple's busiest hours. For contemplative darshan, visit on weekday mornings before 11 AM or weekday evenings after 6 PM. If combining with Malibu tourism (Pacific Coast Highway, Getty Villa, Malibu Beach) — plan the temple visit as a morning priority followed by the coastal tour, not vice versa: the afternoon winding drive back through the mountains to the temple can be tiring on a hot day.

The Temple Society publishes a detailed "first-time visitor guide" with suggested seva selections based on sankalpa (spiritual intention). For prosperity intentions, the Monday Laksharchana is recommended; for health, the Mrityunjaya Homam; for marriage, the Saturday Kalyanam; for new ventures, the Thursday Ashtottara Archana. All sevas must be booked in advance — the temple no longer accepts walk-in sponsorship for any paid seva due to capacity. The $301 Kalyanam sponsorship includes seating for 20 guests and a 30-minute reserved darshan slot for the sponsor family after the ceremony.

Where to Stay

Accommodation

Calabasas and Agoura Hills offer a range of accommodations close to the temple: Courtyard Marriott Agoura Hills (5 km), Four Points by Sheraton Ventura Harbor (35 km), Sheraton Agoura Hills (5 km), and the more luxurious Westlake Village Inn. Budget options include Motel 6 Thousand Oaks and Best Western Plus Thousand Oaks Inn. Many NRI families also stay in Santa Monica or Beverly Hills (45 km) combining temple visits with LA tourism. The temple operates a small 6-room guesthouse on-site for verified devotees attending multi-day festivals, bookable through the office.

For longer stays, the Westlake Village Inn and Hyatt Westlake Plaza offer spa and resort-style accommodation 20 minutes from the temple. For families with children, Four Points by Sheraton Ventura Harbor combines temple proximity with beachside amenities and easy access to Channel Islands National Park day trips. Los Angeles International Airport hotels (Hilton LAX, Marriott LAX) are an option for same-day arrivals but require a 60–75 minute drive to the temple, so most devotees prefer to stay closer in Agoura Hills. For vegetarian dining, the temple's prasadam canteen is satvik-vegetarian only; nearby options include Govinda's of Culver City (40 min), Woodlands Pure Vegetarian Chatsworth (30 min), and Masala Art Agoura Hills (5 min from temple).
