Holi is the festival of colours, the festival of spring, and one of the oldest celebrations of Sanatana Dharma. When is Holi 2026?
Holi 2026 falls on Wednesday, 4 March. Holika Dahan is the previous night, Tuesday 3 March (Purnima evening). The festival celebrates spring and Prahlada's devotion to Lord Vishnu.
What is the story behind Holi?
King Hiranyakashipu obtained a boon that he couldn't be killed by man or beast, day or night, inside or outside. His son Prahlada was a Vishnu devotee, which enraged him. His sister Holika, immune to fire, took Prahlada into a bonfire; Prahlada's faith protected him, Holika burned. Vishnu then incarnated as Narasimha to kill Hiranyakashipu.
How is Holika Dahan performed?
On Holi-eve, communities build a bonfire pyre with wood, dry leaves and an effigy of Holika. After sunset (during Pradosh Kaal), priests or elders perform a brief puja with cow-dung patties, coconut, sweets and gulal, then light the fire. People circumambulate the fire 3 or 7 times, offering kachha sutra/garlands.
What are organic Holi colours made from?
Yellow from turmeric and besan; red from hibiscus and madder root; pink from beetroot; green from neem and gulmohar leaves; blue from indigo; purple from jamun fruit. Synthetic colours can cause skin irritation, eye injury, and lead/asbestos contamination — most temples and family households now use organic alternatives.
