Sabarimala Yatra

Sabarimala is the forest shrine of Lord Ayyappa, the Brahmacharya deity born of Hari (Vishnu as Mohini) and Hara (Shiva). The temple atop the 18 sacred steps in Kerala's Periyar Tiger Reserve sees over 50 million pilgrims a year — making it one of the largest annual gatherings of Hindus anywhere in the world. Unlike other major Hindu pilgrimages, Sabarimala asks something specific of its devotees: a 41-day Mala Dharana vrata of celibacy, vegetarian food, sleeping on the floor, daily Ayyappa puja and barefoot living. The vow prepares the body and mind for the trek through dense forest from Pamba to Sannidhanam, and culminates in the divine darshan of Ayyappa Swami seated in padmasana on the 18 holy steps. HinduTone's Sabarimala hub covers the full yatra cycle: opening Mala Dharana on the first day of Vrischika Masam (mid-November), the day-by-day daily routine for the 41 days, what the Irumudi (the two-bag offering) contains and how to prepare it, the exact trek route from Pamba via Marakkoottam and Sannidhanam, what the 18 sacred steps mean, and the Makaravilakku celebration on Makara Sankranti (14 January). We also cover practical logistics: KSRTC bus services to Pamba, online Q ticket booking via the Kerala government portal, accommodation in Pamba and Erumeli, and the special rules for first-time pilgrims (Kanni Ayyappans) who lead the group. Below: latest yatra updates, festival news, and curated Ayyappa devotional articles.

Frequently asked questions

When does the 41-day Sabarimala Mala Dharana start?

It begins on the first day of Vrischika Masam (mid-November) — for 2026, the start is around 17 November and the 41 days end at Makara Sankranti on 14 January 2027. Some devotees observe the vrata over two months instead of 41 consecutive days.

What goes inside the Irumudi?

The front bag (Mun Mudi) holds the offerings: ghee-filled coconut (Neyy Thengai), camphor, vibhuti, betel leaves, prasadam ingredients. The rear bag (Pin Mudi) holds the devotee's personal supplies. Only Mala Dharana devotees carry an Irumudi.

Can women visit Sabarimala?

Women outside the menstruating age band (under 10 or over 50) have always been allowed darshan. The 2018 Supreme Court ruling on age restrictions remains contested; current temple practice continues to honour the traditional age guidance for women of menstruating age.

How long is the Pamba to Sannidhanam trek?

About 5 km through the Periyar Tiger Reserve forest, with the final climb covering the 18 sacred steps. Most pilgrims walk barefoot. Allow 3–5 hours one-way for first-time devotees; experienced pilgrims complete it in 2 hours.

Is online Q-ticket booking available?

Yes — Kerala Police runs the virtual Q ticket system via sabarimalaonline.org. Booking opens about 30 days before yatra dates. NRI devotees with valid Indian ID can book; foreign passports require special arrangements.
