What is Masik Shivaratri?

Masik Shivaratri, the monthly night of Shiva, falls on Chaturdashi, the fourteenth lunar day of the waning fortnight, the night before Amavasya. Devotees fast during the day, worship Shiva in the evening and keep the main puja around midnight (nishita kaal) with abhishekam, bilva leaves and the chant 'Om Namah Shivaya'. The Masik Shivaratri of Phalguna (Magha in the South) is Maha Shivaratri, the great night of Shiva.

How to read the table: dates, nishita kaal and tithi times are from Drik Panchang for New Delhi. Nishita kaal times that pass midnight belong to the night of the date shown. The month is given in both systems, the North Indian Purnimanta and the South Indian Amanta. By our calculation, Kolkata keeps the last Shivaratri of the year on Sunday 26 December, because Chaturdashi covers its whole nishita kaal only that night; other large Indian cities match Delhi.

Masik Shivaratri 2027 dates abroad: why the date can shift by a day

A tithi (lunar day) starts and ends at the same moment all over the world, but the rule that fixes the vrat day is local: it looks at sunrise, sunset, moonrise or midnight where you live. Those happen at different clock times in every city, so the same tithi can land on a different calendar date abroad. In practice the date is most often a day earlier in North America and sometimes a day later in Australia and East Asia; London and Dubai usually match India. Do not convert India's date or clock time into your time zone. Use the row for your own city, or set your panchang app to your city.

Reading the city table: each cell is the Shivaratri night for that city; bold means it differs from India. New York, London and Sydney are from Drik Panchang's 2027 Masik Shivaratri pages; Toronto, Dubai and Singapore are calculated with the same rule. London's summer nishita kaal is short and late, so in April, June and August Chaturdashi covers only part of it; Drik still keeps the same nights as India there.

Vancouver: by our calculation (Vancouver on UTC−7 all year), Vancouver keeps the same Shivaratri date as New York on 11 of the 13 dates; it differs on Fri 5 Mar, Mon 27 Sep. Drik Panchang's Canada pages may still use the old winter clock, so check the date your temple announces.

Clocks used abroad: every date is for local clock time. New York and Toronto change to daylight saving time on 14 March and back on 7 November 2027; London changes on 28 March and 31 October; Sydney leaves daylight saving on 4 April and starts again on 3 October. Dubai (UTC+4) and Singapore (UTC+8) do not change. Canada: from November 2026 British Columbia stays on UTC−7, Alberta on UTC−6 and Manitoba on UTC−5 all year. In winter that is one hour ahead of the old standard time, so an app that has not been updated will show Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg times an hour early, and dates near midnight can be wrong. Toronto keeps the usual Eastern time changes.

How to keep Masik Shivaratri

  • Day: fast as your health allows: fruit and milk, or one meal without grains.
  • Evening: visit a Shiva temple or set up a Shiva linga or picture at home with water, milk, bilva leaves, white flowers, a lamp and incense.
  • Nishita kaal: offer abhishekam with water or milk, place bilva leaves, and chant 'Om Namah Shivaya' or a Shiva stotram. Some devotees keep a night vigil.
  • Next morning: break the fast after sunrise with prasad and a simple meal.

Abroad, many devotees cannot stay up on a work night. A short puja at the local nishita kaal, or in the evening with the main puja on the weekend Maha Shivaratri, is a common and accepted way to keep the observance.

Shivaratri fasting and health

Health note: a Shivaratri fast is a personal discipline, not a test of endurance. Children, older people, pregnant or breastfeeding women and anyone with diabetes, low blood pressure, an eating disorder or regular medication should talk to a doctor first. They can keep a fruit-and-milk fast, eat one simple meal, or simply do the puja without fasting. Drink water unless your doctor is happy with a waterless fast, and stop if you feel faint or unwell. Staying awake at night after a day's fast can be hard; rest during the day if you can and do not drive tired. This page does not promise any particular result; the vrat is an offering of attention and devotion.

Editor's note

Editor's note (25 October 2026): the India dates and tithi times are from Drik Panchang's 2027 list pages for New Delhi, checked against Drik's Hyderabad calendar. New York, London and Sydney dates are from Drik's 2027 Masik Shivaratri pages (checked 23 and 25 October 2026); other cities are calculated. Where our calculator and Drik disagreed, we used Drik. Festival dates can be revised by temples and regional calendars, and your family or temple tradition comes first; if your local temple announces a different day, follow the temple.
