What is Pradosh Vrat?
Pradosh Vrat (Pradosham in South India) is kept for Lord Shiva on Trayodashi, the thirteenth lunar day of each fortnight, so it comes twice a month. Its heart is the evening: in the pradosh kaal after sunset devotees worship Shiva and Parvati, often with abhishekam to the Shiva linga and offerings of bilva leaves, and many temples hold a Pradosham procession with Nandi. The vrat takes its name from the weekday: Soma (Monday), Bhauma (Tuesday), Budha (Wednesday), Guru (Thursday), Shukra (Friday), Shani (Saturday) and Ravi (Sunday) Pradosh.

How to read the table: dates, names and pradosh kaal times are from Drik Panchang for New Delhi. When Trayodashi starts during the evening, the kaal shown starts at that moment, not at sunset (as on 3 May). Pradosh kaal follows your own sunset, so in Mumbai, Hyderabad or Chennai the times are later or earlier than Delhi's.
Indian cities: the date is the same across India for most Pradosh days. Two are borderline in 2027 because Trayodashi starts or ends close to sunset. For Bhauma Pradosh on 5 January, Trayodashi covers nearly all of Mumbai's pradosh kaal on both 4 and 5 January. For Soma Pradosh on 3 May, Trayodashi begins in the evening of 3 May and ends in the evening of 4 May, so cities with an earlier sunset get more of it on Tuesday 4 May: by our calculation Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata keep 4 May, and Hyderabad is almost evenly split. For those two, check your city's panchang or temple.
Pradosh Vrat 2027 dates abroad: why the date can shift by a day
A tithi (lunar day) starts and ends at the same moment all over the world, but the rule that fixes the vrat day is local: it looks at sunrise, sunset, moonrise or midnight where you live. Those happen at different clock times in every city, so the same tithi can land on a different calendar date abroad. In practice the date is most often a day earlier in North America and sometimes a day later in Australia and East Asia; London and Dubai usually match India. Do not convert India's date or clock time into your time zone. Use the row for your own city, or set your panchang app to your city.

Reading the city table: rows are in order through the year (month of the India date and the paksha). Bold means the date differs from India. New York, London and Sydney are from Drik Panchang's 2027 Pradosh pages; Toronto, Dubai and Singapore are calculated with the same rule. A different date can also change the weekday name: for example the first Pradosh is Bhauma (Tuesday) Pradosh in India but Soma (Monday) Pradosh in New York.
Vancouver: by our calculation (Vancouver on UTC−7 all year), Vancouver keeps the same Pradosh date as New York on 21 of the 25 dates; it differs on Sat 17 Apr, Tue 1 Jun, Fri 13 Aug, Sat 28 Aug. Drik Panchang's Canada pages may still use the old winter clock, so check the date your temple announces.
Clocks used abroad: every date is for local clock time. New York and Toronto change to daylight saving time on 14 March and back on 7 November 2027; London changes on 28 March and 31 October; Sydney leaves daylight saving on 4 April and starts again on 3 October. Dubai (UTC+4) and Singapore (UTC+8) do not change. Canada: from November 2026 British Columbia stays on UTC−7, Alberta on UTC−6 and Manitoba on UTC−5 all year. In winter that is one hour ahead of the old standard time, so an app that has not been updated will show Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg times an hour early, and dates near midnight can be wrong. Toronto keeps the usual Eastern time changes.
How to keep Pradosh Vrat
- Day: fast from sunrise as your health allows: fruit and milk, or one meal after the puja.
- Before sunset: bathe again if you can and prepare the puja: water or milk for abhishekam, bilva leaves, white flowers, a lamp and incense.
- Pradosh kaal: worship Shiva and Parvati, offer abhishekam and bilva leaves, and chant 'Om Namah Shivaya' or a Shiva stotram. Many devotees visit a Shiva temple for the Pradosham abhishekam.
- After the puja: take prasad and break the fast with a light meal.
Abroad, Pradosh often falls on a working evening. Most Hindu temples in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia hold a Pradosham abhishekam in the evening; check your temple's calendar, which follows local sunset.
Pradosh fasting and health
Health note: a Pradosh fast is a personal discipline, not a test of endurance. Children, older people, pregnant or breastfeeding women and anyone with diabetes, low blood pressure, an eating disorder or regular medication should talk to a doctor first. They can keep a fruit-and-milk fast, eat one simple meal, or simply do the puja without fasting. Drink water unless your doctor is happy with a waterless fast, and stop if you feel faint or unwell. This page does not promise any particular result; the vrat is an offering of attention and devotion.
Frequently asked questions
How many Pradosh Vrats are there in 2027?
Twenty-five in India, one on the Trayodashi (thirteenth lunar day) of each fortnight. The first is Bhauma Pradosh on Tuesday 5 January and the last is Shani Pradosh on Saturday 25 December 2027.
When is Soma Pradosh in 2027?
A Pradosh on a Monday is Soma Pradosh. In India in 2027 it falls on Mon 3 May, Mon 17 May, Mon 13 Sep, Mon 27 Sep.
When is Shani Pradosh in 2027?
A Pradosh on a Saturday is Shani Pradosh. In India in 2027 it falls on Sat 20 Mar, Sat 31 Jul, Sat 14 Aug, Sat 11 Dec, Sat 25 Dec.
What is pradosh kaal?
Pradosh kaal is the evening twilight period that starts at sunset and lasts roughly two and a half hours. Shiva puja on Pradosh is done in this window. The vrat is kept on the day Trayodashi falls in the pradosh kaal, so the date depends on your city's sunset.
Is the Pradosh date the same abroad?
Not always. In 2027 the New York date is a day earlier than India 10 times out of 25, and the pradosh kaal is based on your own sunset. Use your city's date and sunset.
Editor's note
Editor's note (25 October 2026): the India dates and tithi times are from Drik Panchang's 2027 list pages for New Delhi, checked against Drik's Hyderabad calendar. New York, London and Sydney dates are from Drik's 2027 Pradosh pages (checked 23 and 25 October 2026); other cities are calculated. Drik's 2027 data showed that when Trayodashi misses the sunset on both evenings, the day with the longer Trayodashi in the pradosh kaal is kept; our calculator now follows that rule. Where our calculator and Drik disagreed, we used Drik. Festival dates can be revised by temples and regional calendars, and your family or temple tradition comes first; if your local temple announces a different day, follow the temple.
