Vishnu is the Preserver of the cosmos — the second member of the Trimurti whose role is to sustain dharma whenever it weakens. Unlike Shiva, who remains in the Himalayas as the Mahayogi, Vishnu repeatedly descends to earth in avatar form whenever cosmic balance demands. His abode is Vaikuntha, his consort is Lakshmi, his vehicle is Garuda, his weapon is the Sudarshana Chakra and his conch is Panchajanya. Vaishnavism, one of Hinduism's four major sampradayas, regards Vishnu as the Supreme Reality. HinduTone's Vishnu hub covers his full story and practice: the ten avatars of the Dashavatara (Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, Kalki) — each restoring dharma at a critical cosmic moment; the eternal four-armed form holding shankha (conch), chakra (discus), gada (mace) and padma (lotus); the famous Vaikuntha mansion where he reclines on Adishesha; the Garuda Purana teachings. Mantras include Om Namo Narayanaya, the Ashtakshara Mantra Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, and the supreme Vishnu Sahasranama (1,008 names) chanted on Saturdays. We also cover the Divya Desams — the 108 temples praised by the Alvar saints, with Tirumala-Tirupati (Sri Venkateswara) being the most-visited in the world. Festival calendar: Vaikuntha Ekadashi (December–January, when the gates of Vaikuntha are said to be open), every Ekadashi vrata (twice monthly), Vamana Jayanti, Narasimha Jayanti, Anant Chaturdashi.

"Om Namo Narayanaya" — the eight-syllable Ashtakshari Mantra. The longer Dvadasakshari "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" is also widely chanted. For deep practice, the Vishnu Sahasranama (1,008 names) is recited on Saturdays. All three confer Vishnu's grace and protection.
Matsya (fish), Kurma (turtle), Varaha (boar), Narasimha (man-lion), Vamana (dwarf), Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha and Kalki (yet to come). Each restores dharma at a critical cosmic moment. Different traditions sometimes substitute Balarama or others for Buddha.
Vaikuntha Ekadashi falls on the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Margashirsha or Pausha month. Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 falls on Tuesday, 30 December. On this day Vishnu's Vaikuntha-dwara is said to be open — temples like Srirangam and Tirumala draw massive crowds.
Krishna is the eighth avatar of Vishnu — Vishnu descended as Krishna in Dwapara Yuga to deliver the Bhagavad Gita and restore dharma. Theologically Vishnu is the original Supreme Reality; Krishna is one of his many forms. Devotionally, some traditions (Gaudiya Vaishnavism) regard Krishna as the source of Vishnu rather than the other way around.
Saturday (Shanivar) is sacred to Vishnu — particularly for the Vishnu Sahasranama recitation. Thursday (Guruvar) is also a Vishnu day in many traditions. Each Ekadashi (twice monthly) is observed as a fast and prayer day dedicated to Vishnu.
