What is Purnima?

Purnima (Pournami in South India) is the full moon day, the fifteenth tithi of the waxing fortnight. It closes the month in the North Indian (Purnimanta) calendar and gives the month its name. Many families keep a Purnima vrat, worship Vishnu as Satyanarayana, offer water to the moon at moonrise, and give food or charity. Several major festivals fall on a Purnima: Guru Purnima, Buddha Purnima, Vat Purnima, Sharad Purnima and Kartika Purnima among them.

Moonrise is our calculation for central Delhi (centre of the moon on a flat horizon, the convention Drik uses); hills and buildings delay the moment you see it. The last column notes well-known observances; their exact rules can differ from the plain Purnima vrat.

Purnima 2027 dates abroad: why the date can shift by a day

A tithi (lunar day) starts and ends at the same moment all over the world, but the rule that fixes the vrat day is local: it looks at sunrise, sunset, moonrise or midnight where you live. Those happen at different clock times in every city, so the same tithi can land on a different calendar date abroad. In practice the date is most often a day earlier in North America and sometimes a day later in Australia and East Asia; London and Dubai usually match India. Do not convert India's date or clock time into your time zone. Use the row for your own city, or set your panchang app to your city.

Reading the city table: each cell is the Purnima vrat day for that city; bold means it differs from India. New York and London are from Drik Panchang's 2027 Purnima pages; Toronto, Dubai, Singapore and Sydney are calculated with the same rules (our calculator matched Drik on every Purnima date it was checked against).

Vancouver: by our calculation (Vancouver on UTC−7 all year), Vancouver keeps the same Purnima vrat date as New York on 10 of the 12 dates; it differs on Tue 14 Sep, Sun 12 Dec. Drik Panchang's Canada pages may still use the old winter clock, so check the date your temple announces.

Clocks used abroad: every date is for local clock time. New York and Toronto change to daylight saving time on 14 March and back on 7 November 2027; London changes on 28 March and 31 October; Sydney leaves daylight saving on 4 April and starts again on 3 October. Dubai (UTC+4) and Singapore (UTC+8) do not change. Canada: from November 2026 British Columbia stays on UTC−7, Alberta on UTC−6 and Manitoba on UTC−5 all year. In winter that is one hour ahead of the old standard time, so an app that has not been updated will show Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg times an hour early, and dates near midnight can be wrong. Toronto keeps the usual Eastern time changes.

How to keep a Purnima vrat

• Morning: bathe (a river or sea bath on the snan day if you can, otherwise at home), light a lamp and make a sankalpa.
• Fast: a day fast with fruit and milk, or one meal; many end it after seeing the moon.
• Puja: Satyanarayana katha and puja is common on Purnima, at home or at the temple; others worship Shiva, Devi or their family deity.
• Moonrise: offer arghya (water with a little milk and rice) to the moon, then take prasad.
• Charity: give food, clothes or a donation, especially on the snan-daan day.

Purnima fasting and health

Health note: a Purnima fast is a personal discipline, not a test of endurance. Children, older people, pregnant or breastfeeding women and anyone with diabetes, low blood pressure, an eating disorder or regular medication should talk to a doctor first. They can keep a fruit-and-milk fast, eat one simple meal, or simply do the puja without fasting. Drink water unless your doctor is happy with a waterless fast, and stop if you feel faint or unwell. Why are the Purnima vrat day and the Purnima snan day sometimes different?

The vrat (fast) is kept on the day the full moon tithi prevails in the evening and at moonrise, which can be the day before. The holy bath and charity (snan-daan) are done on the day Purnima is present at sunrise. In 2027 the two fall on different days in India for Shravana Purnima (Mon 16 Aug and Tue 17 Aug) and Kartika Purnima (Sat 13 Nov and Sun 14 Nov).

When is Guru Purnima 2027?

Sunday 18 July 2027 in India (Ashadha Purnima). In New York and Toronto the Purnima vrat day is Saturday 17 July.

When is Kartika Purnima 2027?

The Kartika Purnima vrat is on Saturday 13 November in Delhi, and the Purnima snan and the festival day are on Sunday 14 November 2027.

Is Purnima on the same date in the USA?

Often a day earlier. In 2027 the Purnima vrat in New York is a day earlier than India 5 times out of 12. Use your city's date; do not convert India's time.
