Quick answer: There are two popular kinds of yearly horoscope. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac and your Sun sign, which depends only on your birth date. Vedic (Hindu) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac and usually your Moon sign (Chandra Rashi), which needs your birth date, time and place. In 2027 the big Vedic story is Jupiter (Guru) moving between Cancer and Leo, Saturn (Shani) entering Aries on 2 June and returning to Pisces on 20 October, and Rahu in Capricorn all year. The big Western story is Saturn in Aries all year and Jupiter moving from Leo into Virgo on 26 July. There are five eclipses, on 6 February, 20 February, 18 July, 2 August and 17 August 2027.

This guide explains both systems in simple language, lists the major 2027 dates for each, and links to a detailed forecast for every sign. All planetary dates come from computed positions (Drik Panchang positions for the Vedic sky and the PyEphem astronomy library for the Western sky). Eclipse dates come from NASA. Dates are in Universal Time (UTC); in India or elsewhere a change can fall on the next or previous calendar day.

Two systems, two different signs

Western astrology: the Sun sign

Western astrology divides the sky into 12 signs that start at the March equinox. Your Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in when you were born, so it depends only on your birth date. For example, people born roughly 21 March to 19 April are Aries. Western yearly horoscopes count houses from the Sun sign.

Vedic astrology: the Moon sign

Vedic astrology, also called Jyotisha, measures the signs against the fixed stars. This is called the sidereal zodiac. Because of the slow wobble of the Earth's axis, the two zodiacs are now a little more than three weeks apart. In Vedic practice the most important sign for yearly predictions is usually your Moon sign, called Chandra Rashi or Janma Rashi. The Moon moves quickly, so you need your birth time and place to know it.

The table shows the gap in 2027: the date the Sun enters each sign in both zodiacs. Many people born in the same month have a different Sun sign in each system, and their Moon sign may be different again.

The big 2027 transits in Vedic astrology

These are the main sidereal (Vedic) movements in 2027, from our Drik Panchang-based data:

  • Jupiter (Guru): Jupiter entered Leo (Simha) on 31 October 2026 and turned retrograde on 14 December 2026. It moves back into Cancer (Karka) on 24 January 2027, turns direct there on 14 April, re-enters Leo on 25 June and enters Virgo (Kanya) on 26 November 2027.
  • Saturn (Shani): Saturn is in Pisces (Meena) at the start of 2027. It enters Aries (Mesha) on 2 June, turns retrograde on 11 August, moves back into Pisces on 20 October and turns direct on 25 December 2027.
  • Rahu and Ketu: Rahu entered Capricorn (Makara) on 5 December 2026, with Ketu opposite in Cancer (Karka). They stay in these signs for the whole of 2027.
  • Mars (Mangal): Mars turns retrograde in Leo on 10 January, moves back into Cancer on 9 March, turns direct on 1 April and returns to Leo on 26 April.
  • Mercury (Budha) retrograde: 10 February (Aquarius) to 3 March (Capricorn); 11 June to 5 July (both in Gemini); 7 October (Libra) to 28 October (Virgo).
  • Sun (Surya): the Sun enters sidereal Capricorn on 14 January 2027 at 15:26 UTC, the astronomical moment behind Makar Sankranti, and sidereal Aries on 14 April at 09:44 UTC (Mesha Sankranti). Festival dates follow your local panchang.

Saturn's two sign changes make 2027 an important year for people who follow Sade Sati, the traditional seven-and-a-half-year period when Saturn passes through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the Moon. While Saturn is in Pisces, that applies to Aquarius, Pisces and Aries Moon signs; from 2 June to 20 October, with Saturn in Aries, it applies to Pisces, Aries and Taurus. Sade Sati is a time for patience and discipline, not fear. Read more in our guide to Shani Deva and Sade Sati.

The big 2027 transits in Western astrology

  • Saturn: in Aries for the whole year. It turns retrograde on 11 August and direct on 25 December 2027.
  • Jupiter: in Leo until 26 July 2027, then in Virgo. It is retrograde at the start of the year and turns direct on 14 April.
  • The Moon's nodes: the North Node is in Aquarius and the South Node in Leo all year.
  • Mars: retrograde from 10 January (in Virgo) to 1 April (in Leo); it moves back into Leo on 21 February.
  • Mercury retrograde: 10 February (Pisces) to 3 March (Aquarius); 11 June (Cancer) to 5 July (Gemini); 7 October (Scorpio) to 28 October (Libra).
  • Venus: our data shows no Venus retrograde in 2027; Venus moves steadily through the zodiac.

Notice that the same planet can be in different signs in the two systems. For example, from 24 January to 25 June 2027 Jupiter is in Cancer for Vedic astrologers but in Leo for Western astrologers. Neither system is a typing mistake; they simply measure from different starting points.

Eclipses in 2027

NASA lists five eclipses in 2027: two solar and three lunar. The times below are the moment of greatest eclipse in UTC, and the visibility is NASA's summary (source: NASA Goddard Space Flight Center). The signs are where the Sun (solar eclipse) or Moon (lunar eclipse) stands that day in each zodiac.

20 FebruaryPenumbral lunar eclipse23:13Americas, Europe, Africa, AsiaVirgoLeo (Simha)

2 AugustTotal solar eclipse10:07Africa, Europe, Middle East, West and South Asia [Total: Morocco, Spain, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Somalia]LeoCancer (Karka)
17 AugustPenumbral lunar eclipse07:14Pacific, AmericasAquariusCapricorn (Makara), at the very edge of the sign

The total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027 is the year's most dramatic event; NASA lists totality across Morocco, Spain, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia. Never look at the Sun directly during any solar eclipse; use proper solar-viewing glasses. Penumbral lunar eclipses are subtle and easy to miss. Traditional observances such as sutak are usually followed only where an eclipse is visible, and many panchangs do not prescribe them for penumbral eclipses; follow your local panchang or temple.

How to find your Moon sign

  1. Write down your date of birth, your exact time of birth (from a birth certificate if possible) and the town or city where you were born.
  2. Use a Vedic birth-chart calculator that uses the sidereal zodiac (most Indian calculators use the Lahiri ayanamsa), or ask a family priest or astrologer.
  3. Look for the sign the Moon occupies. That is your Chandra Rashi (Moon sign). The same chart also shows your birth star (nakshatra).
  4. If you do not know your birth time, your Moon sign may still be clear, because the Moon stays in one sign for about two and a half days. If it changed sign on your birthday, a time is needed.

Once you know your rashi, open its Vedic Moon-sign 2027 forecast from the table above. If you prefer the Western approach, use your Sun sign instead. You can read both; they are different lenses, not rival answers.

How to read a yearly horoscope wisely

A yearly horoscope describes broad themes for millions of people who share a sign. It cannot predict specific events, illness, accidents, marriage, childbirth or job changes, and it is not scientific proof of anything. Use it as a calendar for reflection: a reminder to review plans during retrograde periods, to rest around eclipses and to act with patience when Saturn asks for effort. For health, money or legal questions, always consult a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Sun sign and a Moon sign horoscope?

A Sun sign (Western) horoscope uses the sign the Sun was in at your birth, so it depends only on your birth date. A Moon sign (Vedic) horoscope uses the sign the Moon was in, measured in the sidereal zodiac, so it needs your birth date, time and place.

Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?

The two systems start the zodiac from different points, now a little more than three weeks apart. In 2027, for example, the Sun enters Western Aries on 20 March but Vedic Aries (Mesha) on 14 April. Vedic astrology also usually uses the Moon sign rather than the Sun sign.

When does Saturn change sign in 2027?

In Vedic astrology Saturn enters Aries on 2 June 2027 and returns to Pisces on 20 October 2027. In Western astrology Saturn stays in Aries for the whole of 2027.

When does Jupiter change sign in 2027?

In Vedic astrology Jupiter moves back into Cancer on 24 January, re-enters Leo on 25 June and enters Virgo on 26 November 2027. In Western astrology Jupiter moves from Leo into Virgo on 26 July 2027.

When are the eclipses in 2027?

There are five: an annular solar eclipse on 6 February, penumbral lunar eclipses on 20 February, 18 July and 17 August, and a total solar eclipse on 2 August 2027 (NASA).

When is Mercury retrograde in 2027?

Three times: 10 February to 3 March, 11 June to 5 July, and 7 to 28 October 2027. The dates are the same in both systems, although the signs differ.

Which horoscope should I follow, Vedic or Western?

That is a personal choice. Many Hindu families follow the Vedic Moon sign for festivals, muhurta and family traditions, while Western Sun-sign columns are common in magazines. Neither can guarantee outcomes; use them for reflection, not fear.

Editor's note (9 October 2026)

This guide was prepared on 9 October 2026. Vedic positions follow Drik Panchang data (New Delhi) and sidereal ingress dates computed from it; Western positions were computed with PyEphem; eclipse data is from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Dates are in UTC. We list only these computed events and do not add aspects. Astrology is a cultural and spiritual tradition, not a science, and nothing here is a guarantee or a substitute for professional advice.
