Quick answer: there are 25 Ekadashis in 2027. The year opens with Saphala Ekadashi on Sunday 3 January and closes with Saphala Ekadashi on Thursday 23 December. Nirjala Ekadashi is Monday 14 June, Devshayani Ekadashi Wednesday 14 July and Devutthana Ekadashi Wednesday 10 November in India. Six Ekadashis have a second (Gauna, Vaishnava or Mahadwadashi) day in India. In North America the date is often a day earlier, so check the city table below.

What is Ekadashi?

Ekadashi is the eleventh lunar day (tithi) of each fortnight: once in the waxing half (Shukla paksha) and once in the waning half (Krishna paksha). It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Devotees fast from grains and beans, spend the day in prayer, japa or reading, and break the fast the next morning, on Dwadashi, at the time called parana. Each Ekadashi has its own name and story, from Saphala and Putrada in winter to Nirjala in summer and Devutthana in Kartika.

North India names months the Purnimanta way (a month ends on the full moon), and South India, Maharashtra and Gujarat the Amanta way (a month ends on the new moon). The Ekadashi names are the same in both systems, but a Krishna paksha Ekadashi falls in a different month name: Saphala Ekadashi is in Pausha in the North and in Margashirsha in the South. The table shows both.

How to read the table: the Date column is the day most households fast (Drik's main or Smarta day). 'Second day' gives the Gauna or Vaishnava day when Drik lists one, and the Mahadwadashi days Drik names. Drik Panchang gives the same dates for New Delhi and Hyderabad for all 25 Ekadashis in 2027. Tithi times are Indian Standard Time for New Delhi.

Smarta and Vaishnava Ekadashi: why some dates have two days

When Ekadashi touches two sunrises, or when Dashami (the tenth tithi) is still running in the early morning before sunrise, panchangs give two days. The first is usually kept by Smarta households. The second, called Gauna Ekadashi, is kept by Vaishnava devotees and by those who follow the stricter rule that Ekadashi must be free of Dashami at arunodaya, about 96 minutes before sunrise.

Drik Panchang also names some Dwadashi days as Mahadwadashi (for example Unmilini, Trisparsha, Pakshavardhini and Vijaya Mahadwadashi). Some Vaishnava calendars, including ISKCON's, fast on a Mahadwadashi instead of the Ekadashi. If you follow a temple or sampradaya, use its calendar; this list is a guide, not a ruling.

Parana: breaking the Ekadashi fast

The fast is broken on Dwadashi, after sunrise, ideally in the morning. It should not be broken during Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi, and should be completed before Dwadashi ends. Parana times change with your city's sunrise, so take them from the day's panchang for your city. Our pages for Saphala, Pausha Putrada, Shattila and Jaya Ekadashi 2027 (linked in the table) give parana times by city.

Ekadashi 2027 dates abroad: why the date can shift by a day

A tithi (lunar day) starts and ends at the same moment all over the world, but the rule that fixes the vrat day is local: it looks at sunrise, sunset, moonrise or midnight where you live. Those happen at different clock times in every city, so the same tithi can land on a different calendar date abroad. In practice the date is most often a day earlier in North America and sometimes a day later in Australia and East Asia; London and Dubai usually match India. Do not convert India's date or clock time into your time zone. Use the row for your own city, or set your panchang app to your city.

Reading the city table: bold means the main date differs from India. 'V:' is the Gauna or Vaishnava day that Drik lists for that city. All values are from Drik Panchang's 2027 Ekadashi pages for each city (checked 23 and 25 October 2026).

In 2027 New York's main Ekadashi date is a day earlier than India's 11 times, Toronto's 11 times and London's 7 times. Sydney's is a day later 5 times; Dubai differs once and Singapore never.

Clocks used abroad: every date is for local clock time. New York and Toronto change to daylight saving time on 14 March and back on 7 November 2027; London changes on 28 March and 31 October; Sydney leaves daylight saving on 4 April and starts again on 3 October. Dubai (UTC+4) and Singapore (UTC+8) do not change. Canada: from November 2026 British Columbia stays on UTC−7, Alberta on UTC−6 and Manitoba on UTC−5 all year. In winter that is one hour ahead of the old standard time, so an app that has not been updated will show Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg times an hour early, and dates near midnight can be wrong. Toronto keeps the usual Eastern time changes.

How to keep Ekadashi

  • Day before (Dashami): eat a simple, light meal before sunset and avoid grains late at night if your tradition asks for it.
  • Morning: bathe, light a lamp before Vishnu or Krishna, offer tulsi leaves (picked the day before, since many families do not pick tulsi on Ekadashi), and make a short sankalpa (resolve).
  • The fast: choose what suits your health: no food, fruit and milk, or one meal without grains and beans. Common Ekadashi foods are fruit, milk, curd, nuts, potatoes, sweet potato, sabudana, and flours such as kuttu or singhara.
  • The day: chant the Vishnu Sahasranama or a name of the Lord, read the Ekadashi's katha or the Bhagavad Gita, and avoid quarrels and gossip. Some devotees keep a night vigil (jagaran).
  • Dwadashi: break the fast at parana time with a little prasad, then a simple meal; many families feed someone or give a small donation first.

Working abroad, many families keep a fruit-and-milk fast on a working day and do the longer puja in the evening, or keep the strict fast on the weekend Ekadashis. Both are common; consistency and sincerity matter more than severity.

Ekadashi fasting and health

Health note: an Ekadashi fast is a personal discipline, not a test of endurance. Children, older people, pregnant or breastfeeding women and anyone with diabetes, low blood pressure, an eating disorder or regular medication should talk to a doctor first. They can keep a fruit-and-milk fast, eat one simple meal, or simply do the puja without fasting. Drink water unless your doctor is happy with a waterless fast, and stop if you feel faint or unwell. Nirjala Ekadashi in June is a waterless fast in a hot month; people who work outdoors or who take medicines should keep a milder version. This page does not promise any particular result; the vrat is an offering of attention and devotion.

When is Nirjala Ekadashi 2027?

Monday 14 June 2027 in India, and also 14 June in all six cities in our table abroad. Drik lists Pakshavardhini Mahadwadashi on Tuesday 15 June in Delhi and Hyderabad. Nirjala means without water; anyone with a health condition should take medical advice and may keep a milder fast.

Devshayani Ekadashi, which begins Chaturmas, is on Wednesday 14 July 2027 in India (Tuesday 13 July in New York and Toronto). Devutthana (Prabodhini) Ekadashi, which ends it, is on Wednesday 10 November 2027 in India (Tuesday 9 November in New York, Toronto and London).

Is the Ekadashi date the same in the USA as in India?

Not always. In 2027 the New York date is a day earlier than India for 11 of the 25 Ekadashis, and Toronto for 11. The vrat day depends on local sunrise, so use the date for your own city.

Editor's note

Editor's note (25 October 2026): the India dates and tithi times are from Drik Panchang's 2027 list pages for New Delhi, checked against Drik's Hyderabad calendar. City dates abroad are from Drik's 2027 Ekadashi pages for New York (cached 23 October 2026), Toronto, London, Dubai, Singapore and Sydney (fetched 25 October 2026). Where our calculator and Drik disagreed, we used Drik. Festival dates can be revised by temples and regional calendars, and your family or temple tradition comes first; if your local temple announces a different day, follow the temple.
