On such a day, which Drik calls a Trisparsha Mahadwadashi (three tithis touching one day), Drik places the Smarta fast on Monday, when the Ekadashi begins, and the Vaishnava (Gauna) fast on Tuesday. Follow your family or temple tradition.

All times are local clock times for each city, worked out separately for that city; they are not India's times shifted. Clocks used: US cities and Toronto on standard time (DST ended on 1 November 2026); London on GMT; Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland on summer time; and, under the 2026 provincial changes, British Columbia on UTC−7, Alberta on UTC−6 and Manitoba on UTC−5 all winter. Rows for Delhi, Hyderabad, New York, Vancouver, Seattle and the Bay Area use Drik Panchang's published windows where we checked them; the others come from our calculator, which matches Drik's windows to within one or two minutes. Where a window is very short, check Drik for your exact city.

Dubai and Durban, like India, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, show a Smarta and a Vaishnava day. In Dubai and Durban the Ekadashi covers no sunrise at all (a kshaya Ekadashi), so the Smarta fast is on the day it begins and the Vaishnava fast on the next day.

Pausha Putrada Ekadashi vrat katha: King Suketuman and Queen Shaibya

This is our own retelling. The story is traditionally attributed to the Bhavishya-Uttara Purana, told by Krishna to Yudhishthira; the same story is often told for Shravana Putrada Ekadashi.

King Suketuman ruled the city of Bhadravati with his queen, Shaibya. They were righteous and generous, but they had no child. The king grieved: who would care for his people after him, and who would offer water and food to his ancestors? The ancestors, he feared, would one day have no one to remember them.

Troubled, Suketuman rode alone into the forest. At midday, tired and thirsty, he came to a clear lake surrounded by sages' huts. He bowed to the sages, who said they were the Vishvedevas and had come to bathe, because it was Pausha Shukla Ekadashi, the Putrada Ekadashi. When the king told them his sorrow, they advised him to keep that day's fast and vigil with faith.

The king fasted, worshipped Vishnu through the night and broke his fast on Dwadashi. He returned home, and in time Shaibya gave birth to a son, who grew up to be a wise and caring ruler. Krishna ends by saying that those who keep the vrat with devotion, and those who hear the story, are blessed.

Variations: some tellings call the sages the Vishvedevas, others simply 'munis'; some say the king rode out alone, others with a few attendants. A note for readers: the vrat is a prayer, not a medical treatment, and it does not guarantee a child. Many families keep it simply for the health and good character of children they already have.

How families keep Putrada Ekadashi

  • Prayer for children: parents pray for their children's health, studies and character; couples hoping for a child pray together.
  • Santana Gopala and Bala Krishna: many families worship Krishna as a child (Bala Gopala) on this day, with butter, tulasi and fruit.
  • Dana: giving food, warm clothes or school supplies to children in need is a common way to honour the day in winter.

Pausha Putrada Ekadashi vrat vidhi: a simple home puja

On Dashami, Sunday 17 January

  • Eat one light, sattvic meal; many families avoid grains and beans from sunset.
  • Pick tulasi leaves today if you will use them, because many families do not pluck tulasi on Ekadashi.

On Ekadashi, Monday 18 January (Smarta) or Tuesday 19 January (Vaishnava)

  1. Bathe early, clean the puja space and light a ghee or sesame-oil lamp before an image of Vishnu, Krishna or Lakshmi-Narayana.
  2. Take a short sankalpa (intention) in your own words: that you will keep the vrat with devotion, as far as your health allows.
  3. Offer tulasi leaves, yellow flowers, fruit and butter or milk sweets before Vishnu or Bala Krishna.
  4. Read the story of King Suketuman, chant Vishnu Sahasranama or a short name-mantra.
  5. Keep the fast at the level you can manage (see below). In the evening, do aarti; some families keep a night of bhajans (jagaran).

Parana on Dwadashi, Tuesday 19 January (Smarta, afternoon) or Wednesday 20 January (Vaishnava)

  • Bathe, do a short puja and offer the food to the Lord first.
  • Break the fast inside your local parana window (table above), after the Hari Vasara and before Dwadashi ends. Many begin with tulasi water or fruit, then a simple meal.
  • If you can, share food with someone in need before you eat.

Pausha Putrada Ekadashi 2027: fasting levels and what to eat

PhalaharFruit, milk, curd, nuts and fasting foods; no grains or beans. The most common choice.

Sattvic dayOrdinary vegetarian food without rice, onion or garlic, with extra prayer. Suits children, elders and anyone with a health condition.

Commonly allowed: fruit, milk, curd, paneer, nuts, makhana, potatoes, sweet potatoes, sabudana, and flours of kuttu (buckwheat), rajgira (amaranth) and singhara (water chestnut), usually cooked with rock salt (sendha namak). Simple recipes: sabudana khichdi, kuttu puri and rajgira paratha.

Commonly avoided: rice, wheat and other grains, dals and beans, onion, garlic, meat, eggs and alcohol. Rules differ between families and sampradayas, so follow your elders or your temple.

Health note: if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, elderly, diabetic, have low or high blood pressure, take regular medication (especially insulin or other diabetes medicines, or blood-pressure tablets) or are recovering from illness, do not keep a strict or waterless fast without your doctor's advice. Do not skip prescribed medicines for a fast. Drink water and eat if you feel dizzy or unwell. Children do not need to fast. A sattvic meal with sincere prayer honours the day just as well; no vrat should put your health at risk, and no vrat promises a particular result.

Pausha Putrada Ekadashi for NRI families

  • Monday fast abroad: in North America, the UK and Europe the fast is on Monday 18 January, a working day; Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a public holiday in the USA that day.
  • Morning parana abroad: unlike India, most cities abroad have a normal Tuesday-morning parana window, so breaking the fast before work is easy.
  • Australia and New Zealand: the fast is on Tuesday 19 January, with parana on Wednesday morning.

Pausha Putrada Ekadashi 2027: frequently asked questions

When is Pausha Putrada Ekadashi 2027?

In India it is Monday 18 January 2027 for Smarta families and Tuesday 19 January 2027 for Vaishnava families (Gauna Ekadashi), per Drik Panchang. In the USA, Canada, the UK and Europe it is Monday 18 January; in Australia and New Zealand Tuesday 19 January.

Is there a Pausha Putrada Ekadashi in December 2026?

No. The previous Pausha Putrada Ekadashi was at the end of December 2025. In the 2026-27 season it falls in January 2027.

What is the parana time?

In Delhi, Smarta families break the fast on Tuesday 19 January between 1:35 PM and 3:42 PM, after the Hari Vasara ends at 1:02 PM. Vaishnava families who fast on Tuesday break it on Wednesday 20 January, 7:14 AM to 9:21 AM. In New York parana is Tuesday 19 January, 7:16 AM to 9:12 AM.

Why is the parana in the afternoon in India?

Dwadashi begins at 7:49 AM IST on 19 January, so its first quarter (Hari Vasara), when parana is avoided, lasts until about 1 PM. Drik therefore gives an afternoon parana for the Smarta fast.

Does the Putrada vrat guarantee a child?

No. Putrada means 'giver of sons' or 'giver of children', and the vrat is a prayer for children and their wellbeing. Couples who are trying to conceive should also seek medical advice; the vrat does not replace it and promises no result.

How is it different from Shravana Putrada Ekadashi?

There are two Putrada Ekadashis: Pausha Shukla Ekadashi (December or January) and Shravana Shukla Ekadashi (July or August, also called Pavitra Ekadashi). The story told for both is similar.

Editor's note

Editor's note (25 October 2026): The India date, the Ekadashi tithi times and the parana windows for Delhi and New York, and the Smarta and Gauna dates, come from Drik Panchang's Ekadashi pages. The 28-city table comes from our ephemeris calculator, which reproduces Drik's rules (Ekadashi at sunrise, the Dashami-at-arunodaya rule for Vaishnava dates, Hari Vasara, and the afternoon parana when Hari Vasara runs late) and matched every Drik Ekadashi date we checked for Delhi, New York and Sydney, and Drik's parana windows for Delhi, Hyderabad, New York, Vancouver, Seattle and San Jose to within one or two minutes, including the very short windows. The katha is our own retelling; customs vary by family, region and sampradaya. If your temple announces a different day, follow your temple. Nothing here promises any particular result.
