Why Vasant Panchami is celebrated (Saraswati Jayanti)
Vasant Panchami falls on the fifth day of the bright fortnight of Magha and is treated as the first day of spring (vasanta). It is above all the day of Saraswati, goddess of learning, speech, music and the arts, and many calendars call it Saraswati Jayanti, her appearance day.
A popular telling, in our own words: when Brahma had made the world, it was silent and lifeless. He brought forth a radiant goddess holding a veena, and when she played, the rivers began to flow, birds sang and all beings found speech. She was named Saraswati and Vagdevi, the goddess of the word. Other traditions connect the day with spring and with Kama, the god of love, whose companion is Vasanta, and some regions honour Rati and Kama on this day. Stories differ by region and family.
How India keeps Vasant Panchami: Bengal, Punjab, Telugu states and more
- Bengal, Odisha, Assam and Tripura (Saraswati Puja): images of the goddess are installed at home, in schools and in community pandals. Students place their books and pens before her, and many do not study on the day so that the books receive her blessing. Young children write their first letters in the Hate Khori ritual.
- Punjab, Haryana and north India (Basant): yellow clothes, yellow sweet rice and kite flying mark the coming of spring and the mustard harvest. Use cotton string; glass-coated kite string is dangerous to people and birds and is banned in many places.
- Andhra Pradesh and Telangana (Sri Panchami): families take young children to Saraswati temples for Aksharabhyasam, the first writing of letters. The Gnana Saraswati temple at Basara on the Godavari is especially crowded.
- Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh: schools and colleges hold Saraswati Puja, and Vasant Panchami is one of the main bathing days of the Magh Mela at Prayagraj.
- Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra: many families worship Saraswati and Ganesha before starting new learning, and some temples dress the deities in yellow.
Saraswati Puja vidhi at home (Vasant Panchami puja vidhi)
- Bathe early and wear clean clothes, yellow or white if you can.
- Place a picture or idol of Saraswati on a clean cloth facing east or north. Put books, pens, musical instruments or a laptop near her.
- Light a ghee lamp and incense. Offer yellow and white flowers, a little turmeric and kumkum, and akshata (unbroken rice).
- Offer naivedyam such as fruit, yellow sweet rice, kesari, boondi or a simple kheer.
- Chant "Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah" 108 times, recite the Ya Kundendu stuti below, or the Saraswati Ashtottara.
- Ask the goddess for clear understanding and steady effort. Children can write "Om" or the first letters of the alphabet on a slate or in rice.
- End with aarti and share the prasad.
Health note: some people fast until the puja is over. Fasting is optional; anyone pregnant, elderly, diabetic, unwell or on regular medication should eat normally or ask a doctor first, and children should not be made to fast. Prayer and study bring no guaranteed exam result; the goddess is worshipped for the gift of learning itself.
Ya Kundendu: the Saraswati stuti for Vasant Panchami
The best-known prayer to Saraswati, recited in schools across India. The first verse, from the text published by sanskritdocuments.org:
या कुन्देन्दु-तुषारहार-धवला या शुभ्र-वस्त्रावृता
या वीणावरदण्डमण्डितकरा या श्वेतपद्मासना ।
या ब्रह्माच्युत-शंकर-प्रभृतिभिर्देवैः सदा पूजिता
सा मां पातु सरस्वती भगवती निःशेषजाड्यापहा ॥ १॥
yā kundendu-tuṣārahāra-dhavalā yā śubhra-vastrāvṛtā
yā vīṇāvaradaṇḍamaṇḍitakarā yā śvetapadmāsanā |
yā brahmācyuta-śaṃkara-prabhṛtibhirdevaiḥ sadā pūjitā
sā māṃ pātu sarasvatī bhagavatī niḥśeṣajāḍyāpahā || 1||
Meaning: May the blessed goddess Saraswati protect me, she who is white as the jasmine, the moon and a garland of frost; who is dressed in white; whose hands are graced by the veena and the boon-giving staff; who sits on a white lotus; who is always worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and the other gods; and who removes all dullness. Read the full Ya Kundendu stuti with meaning and the Saraswati Ashtottara (108 names).
Ratha Saptami 2027, two days after Vasant Panchami
Ratha Saptami, the birthday of the Sun god Surya, follows on Saturday 13 February 2027 in India (Drik Panchang). The Saptami tithi runs from 2:59 AM IST on 13 February to 2:06 AM IST on 14 February, and the holy bath is taken before sunrise. In Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Auckland and Suva the day is Sunday 14 February. For snan times by city, the arka-leaf bath and the Tirumala celebrations, see our Ratha Saptami 2027 guide.
Vasant Panchami for NRI families

- School day: a short puja before school, with the child's books placed before the goddess, works well. Some families keep the books there until the evening.
- Temples: many Hindu temples and Bengali cultural associations abroad hold Saraswati Puja on the weekend of 13-14 February. Check their announcements.
- First letters: if you plan Aksharabhyasam or Vidyarambham for a child, ask your temple priest early, because slots fill quickly.

Vasant Panchami 2027: frequently asked questions
When is Vasant Panchami 2027?
Vasant Panchami 2027 is on Thursday 11 February 2027 in India, per Drik Panchang. The Magha Shukla Panchami tithi ends at 3:18 AM IST on Friday 12 February. Saraswati Puja, Basant Panchami and Sri Panchami are all kept on this day.
What is the Saraswati Puja muhurat on Vasant Panchami 2027?
Saraswati Puja is done in the forenoon (purvahna), from sunrise to midday, while Panchami prevails. In Delhi that is about 7:03 AM to 12:35 PM on 11 February. See the city table on this page for other cities; the window depends on your local sunrise.
Is Vasant Panchami on the same day in the USA, UK and Australia?
Yes. By our calculation Thursday 11 February is the day in the USA, Canada, the UK, the Gulf, Singapore, Malaysia, South Africa and Mauritius, and Drik Panchang also lists 11 February for Sydney and Auckland. In eastern Australia and New Zealand Panchami begins in the morning, so start the puja after the time shown in the table.
Why do people wear yellow on Basant Panchami?
Yellow is the colour of spring, of ripening mustard fields in north India and of the goddess's festive offerings. Many families wear yellow, offer yellow flowers and cook yellow sweet rice or kesari. It is a custom, not a rule.
Can a child start learning (Aksharabhyasam) on Vasant Panchami?
Yes. Vasant Panchami is a traditional day for a child's first letters, called Aksharabhyasam in the Telugu states and Hate Khori in Bengal. Families often go to a Saraswati temple such as Basara in Telangana, or do the ritual at home with a priest or an elder.
When is Ratha Saptami 2027?
