Quick answer: Saturday 17 October 2026 is Navratri Day 7, dedicated to Maa Kalaratri. Drik's Hyderabad panchang also lists Navpatrika Puja, Saraswati Puja, Tula Sankranti and the start of the Jain Ashwina Navapada Oli. Shukla Saptami lasts all day and through the night, and Mula nakshatra ends at 09:47 AM IST, after which Purva Ashadha begins.
The fierce goddess of the seventh night arrives on Saturday, the day of Shani and of Lord Venkateswara. Kalaratri's dark form can look frightening, but tradition calls her Shubhankari, the one who brings good. Her message is that the darkness we fear is often the doorway to clarity. Today the Sun also changes sign, Bengal brings the nine sacred plants into the puja, and in Kerala and the South books rest before Saraswati.

Navratri Day 7: Maa Kalaratri
Kalaratri is shown dark-skinned with flowing hair, riding a donkey, holding a sword and a hook while her other hands grant fearlessness and blessings. She is the destroyer of ignorance and fear. Jaggery is a common bhog and grey is the Day 7 colour on many lists. Her mantra, dhyana shloka and full worship are in our Navratri 2026 Day 7: Maa Kalaratri guide.
Religious significance
Navpatrika Puja: in the Bengali, Odia and Assamese Durga Puja, nine plants, among them banana, turmeric, bilva, pomegranate, ashoka and paddy, are bound together, bathed at dawn and draped in a sari as the Kolabou, representing the Goddess in nature. Drik's Hyderabad panchang lists the rite today; Drik's Kolkata calendar places Maha Saptami and Kolabou Puja on Sunday 18 October. Follow your pandal; the Durga Puja 2026 day-by-day guide has the Bengal dates.
Saraswati Puja: the main Saraswati worship of Navratri, traditionally under Purva Ashadha nakshatra (from 09:47 AM in Hyderabad), follows yesterday's Avahan. Tula Sankranti: the Sun enters Tula (Libra) today; in Kodagu this is Kaveri Sankramana, when devotees gather at Talakaveri. See our Tula Sankranti 2026 guide for the significance and puja. Jain Navapada Oli: Jain families begin nine days of Navapada worship and Ayambil today. Vennamuddala Bathukamma: the eighth day in Telangana, with butter and sesame offerings, on the eve of Saddula Bathukamma.
Simple puja vidhi for today
- Light the Navratri lamp and offer jaggery and a dark-coloured flower to Maa Kalaratri with her naam mantra.
- Leave the books and instruments before Saraswati and offer a white flower after 09:47 AM.
- For Saturday, light a sesame-oil lamp for Lord Venkateswara or Shani Deva in the evening.
- On Tula Sankranti, many families bathe early and give charity; a donation of food or clothing is a simple way to mark it.
Essentials vs optional: lamp and prayer are essential; Navpatrika belongs to the pandal and priest, and the Sankranti bath is a custom you can adapt. No materials? Sit in a dark room with a single lamp for five minutes and pray to Kalaratri to remove fear.
Mantra for the day
Om Devi Kalaratryai Namah (oṃ devī kālarātryai namaḥ): "Salutations to Goddess Kalaratri." Chant it 11 or 108 times as an offering of trust. Tradition sees her as the remover of fear; no particular outcome is promised.
Fasting today
Navratri vrat-keepers continue their routine; Jain devotees beginning Ayambil follow their own strict rules. All fasts are optional for those who are elderly, pregnant or unwell; please consult a doctor before fasting.
What you can do today
- Offer jaggery to Maa Kalaratri and wear grey if you follow the colours.
- Name one fear and pray to let it go.
- Light a sesame-oil lamp for Saturday after the 05:53 PM sunset in Hyderabad.
- Give food or clothing to someone in need for Tula Sankranti.
- If you are in a Bengali community, check your pandal's Kolabou Puja date.
- In Telangana, prepare for tomorrow's Saddula Bathukamma.
With family and children
Kalaratri can frighten young children, so tell her story gently: she looks fierce only to the demons, and to her children she is the mother who chases away nightmares. Turn off the lights, light one lamp together and talk about what makes each of you brave. Our guide to explaining Navratri and Dussehra to children helps with this.

Which goddess is worshipped on Navratri Day 7?
Maa Kalaratri, worshipped on Saturday 17 October 2026. She is the fiercest of the Navadurga, dark in complexion, who destroys darkness and fear. She is also called Shubhankari, the one who does good.
What is the Ashwina Navapada Oli?
It is a nine-day Jain observance, held in the bright fortnights of Chaitra and Ashwina, in which devotees worship the Navapada (the nine supreme entities of Jain tradition) and many keep the austere Ayambil diet. Drik lists its start today.
A reflection
The seventh night is the darkest before the festival's dawn. Kalaratri does not remove the dark by hiding it; she walks through it. Courage, today, is facing what we have avoided.
