Quick answer: Sunday 18 October 2026 is Navratri Day 8, dedicated to Maa Mahagauri, with Saraswati Balidan in Drik's Hyderabad listing and Saddula Bathukamma in Telangana. In Hyderabad, Saptami ends at 08:27 AM IST and Ashtami follows; Purva Ashadha ends at 12:49 PM and Uttara Ashadha follows. India's Durga Ashtami is tomorrow, Monday 19 October.
Sunday belongs to Surya, and today's goddess is radiance itself: Mahagauri, "the very fair one", dressed in white, calm and luminous after her long austerity. In Telangana, it is the most joyful evening of the year for many women, as towering Bathukammas are carried to the lakes. If you are tired after a week of devotion, that is fine. Mahagauri is the goddess of purity and peace, and a quiet, clean, unhurried puja suits her best.

Navratri Day 8: Maa Mahagauri
Mahagauri is Parvati restored to brilliant fairness after her tapas, shown in white on a white bull with a trident and a damaru. She embodies purity, forgiveness and calm. Coconut is a common bhog, and lists give purple, pink or peacock green for Day 8. For her dhyana shloka, stuti and full worship, see our Navratri 2026 Day 8: Maa Mahagauri guide. Kanya Pujan is usually done on Ashtami or Navami; see the Kanya Pujan 2026 guide.
Religious significance
Saddula Bathukamma: the ninth and grandest day of Bathukamma, when women build the tallest flower stacks of the festival, sing in circles through the evening and immerse them in tanks and lakes, sharing saddulu (mixed rice dishes) afterwards. In Hyderabad the main gathering is at Tank Bund; see our Saddula Bathukamma at Tank Bund guide.
Saraswati Balidan: the third Saraswati day, traditionally linked with Uttara Ashadha nakshatra, which begins at 12:49 PM in Hyderabad. In homes it is a simple offering of fruit, flowers and sweets before the books placed on Friday. Bengal: Drik's Kolkata calendar gives Maha Saptami and Kolabou Puja today, so many pandals bathe the Navpatrika this morning. Sunday: Ravivara is Surya's day; offering water to the rising Sun is a widespread custom.
Simple puja vidhi for today
- At sunrise (06:10 AM in Hyderabad), offer water to the Sun from a small vessel, if you keep the Sunday custom.
- Light the Navratri lamp, offer a white flower and coconut to Maa Mahagauri and chant her naam mantra.
- After 12:49 PM, offer fruit and a sweet before the books and instruments kept for Saraswati.
- In the evening, join or watch Saddula Bathukamma, or sing a Bathukamma song at home.
Essentials vs optional: the lamp, a flower and a prayer are essential; the Surya arghya, colours and coconut are customs. No materials? Wash your face and hands, sit quietly facing the light, and offer Mahagauri a prayer for a clean, calm heart.
Mantra for the day
Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah (oṃ devī mahāgauryai namaḥ): "Salutations to Goddess Mahagauri." Chant it 11 or 108 times as an offering of peace, without asking for any particular result.
Fasting today
Many families fast on Ashtami; this year India's Durga Ashtami vrat is on Monday 19 October, while families in the USA, Canada and the UK may keep it today, following Drik's local listing. All fasts are optional. Elderly people, pregnant women and anyone with a medical condition should consult a doctor and need not fast.
What you can do today
- Offer water to the rising Sun and coconut to Maa Mahagauri.
- Clean and tidy the puja space before tomorrow's Ashtami and Navami.
- Forgive one old hurt, in the spirit of the goddess of purity.
- Offer fruit and sweets for Saraswati Balidan after Uttara Ashadha begins.
- Join Saddula Bathukamma in the evening; carry water and keep children close in crowds.
- Prepare for Kanya Pujan tomorrow if your family does it on Ashtami or Navami.
With family and children
Today is made for families. Let children help pick and stack flowers for the Bathukamma, learn one Bathukamma song refrain, or dress in white for Mahagauri. Tell them how Parvati's long tapas left her shining. If you live abroad, our Bathukamma across borders page shows how diaspora families keep the day.

Frequently asked questions
Is Durga Ashtami on 18 or 19 October 2026?
In India, Drik Panchang lists Durga Ashtami on Monday 19 October 2026, when Ashtami prevails at sunrise. Ashtami tithi itself begins at 08:27 AM IST on Sunday 18 October in Hyderabad. In the USA, Canada and the UK, Drik lists Durga Ashtami on Sunday 18 October.
Why is Maa Mahagauri worshipped on 18 October if Ashtami is on the 19th?
Because Saptami spans two sunrises this year, the nine days of worship and the tithis do not line up neatly. Our day-by-day Navratri pages place Day 8 (Mahagauri) on Sunday 18 October and Day 9 (Siddhidatri) on Monday 19 October, when Ashtami and Navami share the day. Many families worship Mahagauri on Durga Ashtami itself; follow your family tradition.
When is Saddula Bathukamma in 2026?
Saddula Bathukamma, the grand final day of Bathukamma, is on Sunday 18 October 2026 according to the Telangana schedule, with the main Hyderabad celebration at Tank Bund in the evening.
What is Saraswati Balidan?
Saraswati Balidan is the offering to Goddess Saraswati made on the third of the Saraswati days of Navratri, traditionally when Uttara Ashadha nakshatra prevails. In most homes today it is a simple, vegetarian offering of flowers, fruit and sweets. In Hyderabad, Uttara Ashadha begins at 12:49 PM.
A reflection
Mahagauri shines because she has been through the fire of tapas. On the eighth day, let the effort of the week settle into calm. What remains after devotion is not exhaustion but a quiet brightness.
