How Bathukamma is celebrated in Telangana's villages and towns

Bathukamma is the official state festival of Telangana (since 2014), and it belongs to every district, village and colony. The name is traditionally explained as 'Mother Goddess, come alive', and the festival is understood as the worship of Gauri, or Maha Gauri, through flowers. The way it is celebrated is broadly the same across the state, though every family and village has its own small variations.

Building the Bathukamma

In the afternoon, women and girls arrange seasonal flowers in rings, one above the other, on a plate or bamboo base to form a tall, conical stack. Common flowers include tangedu (tanghedu), gunuka, banti (marigold), chamanti, katla and gummadi (pumpkin) flowers. A small Gauramma, shaped from turmeric, is placed on top or beside the stack. For a step-by-step method, see crafting the perfect Bathukamma.

The evening gathering

In the evening, women carry their Bathukammas to a shared place: the local temple, the village square, a community ground, a colony park or the tank bund. The Bathukammas are placed in the centre, and the women form circles around them, clapping in rhythm and singing Bathukamma songs, many with the familiar refrain 'Uyyalo'. The songs tell stories of goddesses, family life, harvest and the village, and are passed from mothers and grandmothers to daughters.

Immersion in the cheruvu

When the singing ends, the Bathukammas are carried to the local cheruvu (tank), lake or pond and gently immersed, with songs asking Gauramma to return next year. Afterwards, women share prasadam such as maleeda and sattu (saddulu), and often exchange turmeric and kumkum. On Saddula Bathukamma, the last day, the Bathukammas are at their largest and the gatherings at their fullest.

In towns and cities, the same pattern moves into apartment complexes, gated communities and colony associations, and local bodies often prepare tanks, ponds or temporary ponds for immersion. 2026 local updates

Warangal and Hanumakonda

The Hans India reported on 7 October 2026 that preparations are under way for Bathukamma at Arkasaikunta, Gopalapur in Hanumakonda (Greater Warangal), covering sanitation, drinking water, power supply and roads around the tank. The report gives no event date, so check with local officials for timings. News report.

Separately, the Sri Bhadrakali Temple in Warangal holds its Sharannavaratri festival from 11 October, with security, queue lines, parking and traffic arrangements by the Warangal Police Commissionerate, as reported by The Hans India. This is the temple's Navaratri festival, not a Bathukamma event; the report does not mention Bathukamma. News report.

Malkajgiri (Hyderabad)

The Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation has ordered drinking water, toilets, ramps and steps, and lighting at mini-ponds, baby ponds and temporary ponds for Bathukamma immersion, according to The Hans India (29 September 2026). The report does not name the ponds or give dates, so ask your ward office or colony association which pond serves your area. News report.

Hyderabad

Hyderabad hosts the state's main Saddula Bathukamma at Tank Bund on Sunday 18 October, and celebrations at Ravindra Bharathi throughout the festival, as reported. Full details are on our Hyderabad Bathukamma 2026 page.

Where to check your district's arrangements

Most Bathukamma gatherings are local and are not listed online. To find venues, immersion points and timings near you:

  • District collectorate website: district administrations post festival arrangements, press releases and contact numbers on their official websites.
  • Municipal corporation or municipality: local bodies prepare tanks, ponds, lighting and sanitation, and often announce immersion points.
  • Local news: Telugu and English dailies carry district editions with Bathukamma arrangements in the days before Saddula.
  • Police advisories: for traffic diversions around large gatherings, check your city or district police's official social media.
  • Temple committees and colony associations: many gatherings are organised by the local temple, the colony welfare association or the gram panchayat.

Eco-friendly Bathukamma and immersion tips

  • Natural flowers only: use real seasonal flowers and leaves. Avoid plastic flowers, thermocol, glitter and synthetic dyes.
  • Natural base: a bamboo or steel plate, or a base you take home after immersion, keeps the tank clean.
  • Remove non-biodegradable items: take back plates, plastic wraps, ribbons and lamps before immersion.
  • Use designated points: immerse at the ghats, ponds or temporary ponds prepared by local bodies, and follow volunteers' directions.
  • Keep the lake clean: carry your prasadam containers and water bottles home, and do not leave waste on the bund.
  • Safety near water: keep children away from the water's edge, and go in a group after dark.

Dasara after Bathukamma

Two days after Saddula Bathukamma comes Dasara (Vijayadashami) on Tuesday 20 October 2026, with Shami (jammi) puja, Ayudha puja and the exchange of jammi leaves with elders. See Dussehra 2026 in Telangana, the jammi (Shami) leaf exchange on Dussehra and the Dussehra / Vijayadashami 2026 pillar.

Bathukamma abroad

Telugu families from Telangana celebrate Bathukamma in many countries, usually on the weekends near the India dates, through Telugu associations and temples. Our country guides:
