Quick answer: Monday 19 October 2026 is Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami in India, with Sandhi Puja at the meeting of the two tithis, Saraswati Visarjan and Navratri Day 9 for Maa Siddhidatri. In Hyderabad, Ashtami ends and Navami begins at 10:51 AM IST; Uttara Ashadha gives way to Shravana at 03:38 PM. Dussehra follows on Tuesday 20 October.
This is the summit of Navratri. Two of its holiest tithis meet on a single Monday, and the moment where they touch, the sandhi, is regarded in Durga Puja tradition as the instant when the Goddess took the fierce form of Chamunda to slay the demons Chanda and Munda. In homes across North India, little girls are welcomed as the Goddess for Kanya Pujan; in the South, tools and books rest for Ayudha Puja; and in Bengal, 108 lamps are lit for Sandhi Puja. Whatever your tradition, today is for wholehearted offering.

Navratri Day 9: Maa Siddhidatri
Siddhidatri, seated on a lotus with a discus, conch, mace and lotus in her four hands, is the giver of siddhis, the spiritual perfections. She completes the Navadurga, and many traditions say even Shiva received his powers through her grace. Sesame or halwa-puri-chana are common bhog, and lists give purple, pink or peacock green for the day. Her full worship is in our Navratri 2026 Day 9: Maa Siddhidatri guide.
Religious significance
Durga Ashtami: the eighth day is among the most important of Navratri, with special worship, fasting and Kanya Pujan in many families. In Bengal it is Maha Ashtami, with Pushpanjali and Kumari Puja; Drik's Kolkata calendar lists Maha Ashtami, Kumari Puja and Sandhi Puja today. Sandhi Puja: the junction of Ashtami and Navami, linked to the Devi Mahatmya's account of Chamunda, is marked with 108 lamps and 108 lotuses in many pandals. Maha Navami: the ninth day closes the nine nights. In Kolkata, Maha Navami worship is on Tuesday 20 October, following the Bengali panjika.
Ayudha Puja and Saraswati Visarjan: in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and parts of Andhra Pradesh, tools, vehicles and books are worshipped on Maha Navami; see our Ayudha Puja 2026 guide. Saraswati Visarjan, the farewell to the Goddess of learning, is traditionally linked with Shravana nakshatra, which begins at 03:38 PM in Hyderabad. In Kerala the books stay before the Goddess until Vidyarambham, which Drik lists on Wednesday 21 October. Masik Durgashtami is the monthly Ashtami of Durga, which today coincides with the great annual one. Monday adds Shiva, whom Siddhidatri is said to have blessed.
Simple puja vidhi for today
- Morning, while Ashtami prevails: light the lamp, offer red flowers and a sweet to the Goddess, and read from the Devi Mahatmya or chant her name.
- Kanya Pujan (optional): wash the feet of young girls, apply kumkum, offer halwa, puri and chana, and give a small gift.
- Around the Ashtami-Navami junction, many families light several lamps at home in the spirit of Sandhi Puja.
- After Navami begins, offer sesame or a sweet to Maa Siddhidatri with her naam mantra.
- For Ayudha Puja, clean your tools, books, laptop or vehicle, apply a little turmeric and kumkum on a safe surface, and offer a flower.
Essentials vs optional: a lamp, a flower and a prayer are essential; Kanya Pujan, 108 lamps and the full Saptashati are cherished customs. No materials? Light one lamp, bow to the girls and women in your home with respect, and pray in your own words. The Kanya Pujan 2026 vidhi and Kanya Pujan prasad recipe cover the details.
Mantra for the day
Om Devi Siddhidatryai Namah (oṃ devī siddhidātryai namaḥ): "Salutations to Goddess Siddhidatri." Chant it 11 or 108 times to close the nine days, offering the whole of your Navratri to her rather than asking for a particular result.
Vrat guidance
Many devotees fast on Ashtami and break the Navratri fast after Navami worship or Kanya Pujan; others break it on Dashami. Customs differ by family. Elderly people, pregnant women and anyone with a medical condition should not feel obliged to fast; please consult a doctor. See the Navratri fasting rules guide.
What you can do today
- Do your Ashtami puja in the morning, before 10:51 AM in Hyderabad.
- Host Kanya Pujan, or give a meal and a gift to young girls in need.
- Light lamps at the Ashtami-Navami junction or attend Sandhi Puja at a pandal.
- Clean and honour your tools of work for Ayudha Puja if your family keeps it today.
- Offer sesame or halwa to Maa Siddhidatri after Navami begins.
- Plan tomorrow's Vijayadashami: Shami puja, Vidyarambham and the Vijay Muhurat.
With family and children
Kanya Pujan puts children at the centre: the girls are honoured as the Goddess, and boys often join as Langur (Bhairava). Explain why gently, and let them carry the prasad. For Ayudha Puja, let children clean and decorate their school bags and pencil boxes. Our Dussehra story for kids prepares them for tomorrow.
