Quick answer: Ayudha Puja 2026 falls on Monday 19 October 2026 in South India (Drik Panchang), the same day as Maha Navami. Families clean and decorate the tools of their work, such as vehicles, machines, books, musical instruments, kitchen items and laptops, and offer thanks. Vijayadashami follows on Tuesday 20 October, when tools are taken back and children begin Vidyarambham.
Ayudha Puja is one of the most practical festivals in the Hindu year: a day to stop, say thank you to the things that support our livelihood, and begin again with a clean slate. This guide covers the date, meaning, regional customs and a step-by-step home vidhi, with special notes for IT professionals, students, shop owners and families abroad.

What is Ayudha Puja and why is it celebrated?
Ayudha means instrument or weapon. On Ayudha Puja, families honour the tools that sustain their work and learning, from vehicles and machines to books, pens and laptops, seeing in them a gift of the Goddess. It is a day of gratitude, rest for one's tools and a fresh start on Vijayadashami.
The story, as commonly told: during their final year in disguise, the Pandavas hid their weapons in a Shami tree. When the year ended, Arjuna retrieved his bow Gandiva from the tree, worshipped the weapons and went on to victory, and this day is remembered as Vijayadashami. Another commonly told account links the day to the Goddess, whose weapons were honoured after her victory over Mahishasura. Families also connect it with the worship of Saraswati, whose blessing rests on books and instruments of learning.
For the Shami puja and the full Vijayadashami ritual, see Ayudha Puja, Vahana Puja and Shami Puja: Vijayadashami vidhi.
How South Indian states observe Ayudha Puja
Customs vary from home to home, but some broad patterns are widely seen:
- Tamil Nadu: Ayudha Pooja and Saraswathi Pooja are kept together on Maha Navami. Homes, offices, factories and shops are cleaned, tools and vehicles are smeared with sandal paste and kumkum, and sundal, puffed rice, jaggery and fruit are offered. Many businesses close for the day.
- Karnataka: Ayudha Puje is part of Dasara. Vehicles are washed and garlanded, and workshops and offices worship their machines. The royal weapons are traditionally worshipped at the Mysuru palace during Dasara; see our Mysore Dasara 2026 guide.
- Kerala: in the custom of Pooja Veppu, books, instruments and tools are placed before the Goddess, and they are taken back in Pooja Eduppu on Vijayadashami, followed by Vidyarambham. See Navaratri and Vijayadashami 2026 in Kerala.
- Andhra Pradesh and Telangana: vehicles, farm implements, shop tools and books are worshipped on Navami or on Vijayadashami, alongside Bathukamma, Shami (Jammi) puja and Dasara celebrations. See Dussehra 2026 in Telangana.
In North India, the related Shastra Puja is commonly done on Vijayadashami. For both traditions side by side, see Ayudha Puja and Shastra Puja 2026.
What is worshipped on Ayudha Puja?
Almost anything that supports work, learning or the household can be included. Choose what matters in your life:
- Vehicles: cars, two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, trucks, tractors, bicycles
- Tools and machines: workshop tools, sewing machines, farm implements, factory machines
- Books, notebooks, pens, school bags and certificates
- Musical instruments: veena, mridangam, violin, harmonium, guitar
- Kitchen implements: grinder, mixer, knives, ladles, the stove
- Laptops, keyboards, phones, cameras and other work equipment
- Account books, cash boxes, weighing scales and shop counters
Ayudha Puja vidhi: step by step at home
A simple home Ayudha Puja has six steps: clean the items, arrange them before the Goddess, decorate them with sandal paste, turmeric, kumkum and flowers, light a lamp, offer naivedya such as sundal, puffed rice, fruit and jaggery, then pray and perform aarti. Leave the items to rest until Vijayadashami.
- Clean: a day earlier, or in the morning, clean the house, wash vehicles, oil and wipe tools, dust books and switch off and clean electronics.
- Arrange: spread a clean cloth before the picture of Durga, Saraswati or your family deity. Place books, instruments and small tools on it; bring larger items such as vehicles to a clean spot nearby.
- Decorate: apply a little sandal paste with dots of kumkum, place flowers or a small garland, and tie a thread or mango leaf if that is your custom.
- Lamp: light a ghee or oil lamp and incense, keeping them well away from fabrics, paper and fuel.
- Naivedya: offer sundal (seasoned chickpeas), puffed rice with jaggery, fruit, a banana and betel leaves, or whatever your family prepares.
- Prayer: chant a mantra your family knows, or the simple Durga mantra below, then thank the Mother in your own words for the work and learning these things make possible.
- Aarti: wave camphor or the lamp before the Goddess and the items, then share prasad.
- Rest and resume: many families leave books and tools in place overnight and take them back after a short prayer on Vijayadashami, Tuesday 20 October.
A simple Durga mantra:
ॐ दुं दुर्गायै नमः॥
Om Dum Durgayai Namah: "Om, salutations to Durga." Chant it 11 or 108 times. As Ayudha Puja falls on the ninth day, many also chant the naam mantra of Maa Siddhidatri; see the Navratri 2026 Day 9 guide.
How IT professionals and students can observe Ayudha Puja
Shut down and clean your laptop, keyboard and books, arrange them neatly before the Goddess on a clean cloth, and place flowers and kumkum beside them, not on them. Light a lamp at a safe distance, offer a short prayer of gratitude, and, if you can, rest from work for the day.
- Laptop and keyboard: power off, unplug and wipe the device. Keep water, turmeric paste and kumkum on a plate or paper beside it; liquids and powders can damage keys and ports. A kumkum dot on a sticky note placed on the lid is a neat, safe option.
- Work desk: tidy your desk or home office corner, place a small flower and a picture of the Goddess, and keep the lamp on a metal plate well clear of cables.
- Books and notes: students place textbooks, notebooks, pens and calculators in the puja. Many families keep them unopened until Vijayadashami morning.
- Engineering and lab tools: clean multimeters, toolkits or drawing instruments and add them to the puja; return borrowed lab equipment untouched.
- No work for the day, if possible: if deadlines or exams make that impossible, a brief prayer before you open the laptop keeps the spirit of the day.
On Vijayadashami, start the year's learning afresh: read a page, write a few lines or open a new project. For the tradition of beginning learning, see Saraswati Puja and Vidyarambham on Vijayadashami.
Ayudha Puja for business owners and shops
Shops, workshops and offices are cleaned and decorated, often with mango-leaf torans and banana stems at the entrance. Account books, cash counters, weighing scales and machines are worshipped, and staff share prasad together. Many owners treat the day as a thank-you to their team. Seeking blessings for the work ahead is a devotional custom, not a promise of profit.
Vehicle puja: safety first
Wash and decorate the vehicle, draw kumkum and sandal marks, tie flowers or a small garland, and pray. Keep camphor and lamps well away from the fuel tank, engine and tyres. If you break an ash gourd or coconut, do it safely and clear every piece from the road afterwards.
- Never place a lit camphor or diya on the bonnet, near the fuel cap or under the vehicle. Light camphor on a plate held a safe distance away.
- Keep garlands and threads clear of the steering wheel, pedals, mirrors, wipers and number plates.
- The custom of breaking a kumkum-smeared ash gourd (poosanikai) in front of vehicles or shops is common in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Broken pieces on the road can cause two-wheeler accidents, so sweep them up at once.
- Placing lemons under the wheels is a family custom in many homes; drive slowly over them in an open, safe space.
From Saraswati Puja to Vidyarambham
In many South Indian homes, Saraswati is honoured on Maha Navami with books and instruments, and on Vijayadashami the items are taken back after a short prayer and used again. This is the day of Vidyarambham, when young children are introduced to letters, often by writing in a plate of rice. Vijay Muhurat details are in the Vijayadashami 2026 mantras and Shami puja guide.
Ayudha Puja at home abroad
Families in the USA, Canada, the UK and elsewhere can keep a simple Ayudha Puja at home on Monday 19 October, which Drik lists as Maha Navami there. Gather laptops, books, car keys, a few kitchen tools and musical instruments on one cloth, light an LED or real diya safely, and pray together in the evening after work.
Car keys can stand in for a vehicle in a flat with no driveway, and children enjoy decorating their own school bags. Many temples abroad hold Navaratri programmes; check your local temple's website for its 2026 schedule. Colours for the day are a popular custom rather than a rule, see Navratri 2026 colours.
Frequently asked questions
When is Ayudha Puja in 2026?
Ayudha Puja 2026 is on Monday 19 October in South India, per Drik Panchang. It coincides with Maha Navami, the ninth day of Navratri. Vijayadashami (Dussehra) follows on Tuesday 20 October 2026, when many families also worship vehicles and begin Vidyarambham.
Can we do Ayudha Puja for a laptop?
Yes. Many IT professionals and students place their laptop, keyboard and books in the puja. Switch the laptop off, wipe it clean, and keep turmeric, kumkum, water and flowers on a paper or cloth beside it rather than on the device. A small kumkum dot on a sticky note or the bag is a safe alternative.
What is the difference between Ayudha Puja and Saraswati Puja?
Ayudha Puja honours the tools, instruments and vehicles of one's work, while Saraswati Puja honours the Goddess of learning through books, pens and instruments. In Tamil Nadu and Karnataka they are commonly kept on the same day, Maha Navami, which in 2026 is Monday 19 October.
Should we work or study on Ayudha Puja day?
In many South Indian homes, tools and books placed for puja are rested for the day, so people avoid working with them or studying until they are taken back on Vijayadashami. This is a family custom. If your job or exams require it, offer a short prayer and carry on.
Is Ayudha Puja the same as Shastra Puja?
They share the same idea of honouring the instruments of one's duty. Ayudha Puja is the South Indian name and is kept on Maha Navami. In North India, Shastra Puja (weapon worship) is commonly done on Vijayadashami, which is Tuesday 20 October 2026.
How do I do Ayudha Puja abroad in the USA or UK?
Drik lists Maha Navami on Monday 19 October in the USA, Canada and the UK, so many families keep Ayudha Puja that evening at home. Clean your laptop, books, car keys and kitchen tools, decorate them gently, light a lamp and pray. Check your local temple's calendar for any community puja.
