Family chats this year will be confusing. Siblings in London, New York, Toronto, Dubai and Frankfurt keep Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November, while those in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Auckland and India keep it on Wednesday 11 November. This guide explains why, gives Drik's aparahna times for nine cities, lists the Diwali-week dates, and offers a simple tilak vidhi and story. For the main guide, see Bhai Dooj 2026: date, story and tika vidhi.

In Singapore and Malaysia, where most Hindus are of Tamil heritage, Deepavali itself is the great celebration and Bhai Dooj is less widely known. It is kept mainly by families with roots in North India, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Bengal and Nepal. In New Zealand, with its large North Indian and Indo-Fijian communities, it is more familiar.

Bhai Dooj aparahna tilak times for 9 cities

The aparahna is the afternoon portion of the day, traditionally preferred for the Bhai Dooj tilak and meal. All times are local on Wednesday 11 November 2026, from Drik Panchang.

Christchurch2:41 PM to 5:34 PM

Drik Panchang gives Dwitiya tithi from 4:30 PM on 10 November to 6:23 PM on 11 November in Singapore and Malaysia, and from 9:30 PM on 10 November to 11:23 PM on 11 November in New Zealand. For reference, Drik's aparahna window in New Delhi is 1:10 PM to 3:20 PM IST; do not use India's times abroad. On a working Wednesday, an evening tilak while Dwitiya is still running is a common choice.

Why the date matches India, but not the UK or USA

Bhai Dooj is kept on Kartika Shukla Dwitiya, and the rule is that Dwitiya should cover the afternoon. Dwitiya begins at one instant worldwide, 2:00 PM IST on 10 November. In Singapore and Malaysia that is 4:30 PM, and in New Zealand 9:30 PM, so Tuesday afternoon is not in Dwitiya; the full afternoon in Dwitiya is Wednesday, exactly as in India. Further west the same instant falls on Tuesday morning, 8:30 AM in London and 9:30 AM in Frankfurt, so those countries keep Tuesday. See our guides for Germany, Europe and South Africa, the UK and Australia, which also keeps Wednesday.

Bhai Dooj tilak vidhi at home

  • Prepare a thali with kumkum or roli, akshat (unbroken rice), a diya, sweets and a coconut or fruit.
  • The brother sits facing his sister; in some families he faces east or north.
  • The sister applies the tilak, adds a few grains of rice, and waves the diya in aarti.
  • She prays for his long life and wellbeing and feeds him a sweet.
  • He gives her a gift and his blessing or promise of support.
  • If possible, the brother eats a meal cooked by his sister, the custom that gives the day its other name, Yama Dwitiya.

In Singapore and Malaysia, Deepavali sweets such as murukku and laddu from the weekend are a natural part of the thali. In New Zealand, families often add the sweets made for Diwali on Sunday.

Bhai Dooj in a mixed Deepavali household

Many families in Singapore, Malaysia and New Zealand now combine traditions. A Tamil spouse may start Deepavali morning with the oil bath and new clothes, while a North Indian spouse keeps Lakshmi Puja in the evening and Bhai Dooj three days later. A few ways families bring the customs together:

  • Keep the whole week in view. Deepavali on Sunday 8 November, Govardhan Puja or Annakut on Tuesday 10 November and Bhai Dooj on Wednesday 11 November give the week a shape that children can follow.
  • Explain the meaning. For children who grew up with Tamil Deepavali only, Bhai Dooj is easy to introduce: a day when sisters pray for their brothers and brothers promise to protect their sisters.
  • Include cousins. In many families the tilak extends to cousins and close friends treated as siblings. In a small diaspora community, that is often how the day is kept alive.
  • Share the meal. The heart of Yama Dwitiya is the meal at the sister's home. A simple dinner on Wednesday evening, after work and school, keeps that custom.

No single way is correct. What matters is that the bond between siblings is honoured with sincerity.

The story of Yama and Yamuna, as commonly told

As commonly told, Yamuna, the river goddess, kept inviting her brother Yama, the god of death, to visit. On the Dwitiya after Diwali he came at last, and she welcomed him with a tilak, an aarti and a feast. Moved, Yama declared that any brother who receives his sister's tilak and eats at her home on this day need not fear untimely death. Another tradition tells of Krishna visiting his sister Subhadra after defeating Narakasura. Read more in the story of Bhai Dooj.

Siblings across time zones

  • Singapore or Malaysia and India: India is two and a half hours behind. A Wednesday-evening tilak in Singapore is late afternoon in India, so both sides can share the same Bhai Dooj on a call.
  • New Zealand and India: India is seven and a half hours behind. A Wednesday-evening call from Auckland reaches India around midday on Wednesday, still Bhai Dooj there.
  • With siblings in the UK, USA or Europe: they keep Tuesday 10 November. Their Tuesday evening is your Wednesday morning in Singapore or Auckland, so one call can bridge both days.
  • On screen: keep a thali at both ends. The sister does the aarti on camera and the brother applies tilak himself, or she applies tilak to his photo.
  • Keep timings local: never convert India's muhurat to your own clock. Use Drik Panchang for your own city.

Gift ideas

  • Sweets or dry fruits, or a delivery to your sibling's door in their city.
  • Something for the tropics or a Kiwi spring: a good umbrella, a water bottle or outdoor gear.
  • A book, a voucher or a shared outing for the weekend.
  • A donation in your sibling's name.
  • For siblings in India, order through a delivery service in their city.

Names across communities

Gujarati families call it Bhai Beej, Marathi families Bhau Beej, Bengali families Bhai Phonta (see Bhai Phonta 2026), and Nepali families keep Bhai Tika on the last day of Tihar. Customs and sometimes dates differ, so follow your family's calendar.

Yes. Singapore's Ministry of Manpower lists Deepavali on Sunday 8 November 2026, and Monday 9 November is a public holiday if your rest day falls on 8 November. Bhai Dooj itself, on Wednesday 11 November, is a normal working day.

My sibling is in London. Which day should we keep?

Each sibling can keep the date for where they live: Tuesday 10 November in London and Wednesday 11 November in Singapore, Malaysia or New Zealand. Many families make two short calls so that each side shares its own day.
