If Dussehra is the great victory, Bharat Milap is the tender homecoming. After fourteen years in the forest and the battle of Lanka, Rama returns to the brother who had refused a kingdom that was offered to him, who kept Rama's sandals on the throne and waited. In Kashi, the city of Shiva and one of the great homes of the Ramlila, thousands gather each year to watch that embrace. This guide covers the date, the Ramayana story, why the day follows Dussehra, Varanasi's celebration, and simple ways to mark it at home. For the main festival, see our Dussehra / Vijayadashami 2026 guide.

Why Bharat Milap falls on 21 October
The Hindu calendar counts days by tithi, the lunar day, and a tithi rarely begins at sunrise. In 2026 Dashami begins at 12:50 PM on Tuesday 20 October. Because the Vijay Muhurat of Dussehra falls in the afternoon, the 20th is the all-India Vijayadashami. But Dashami is also the tithi current at sunrise on Wednesday 21 October, and it lasts until 2:11 PM that day. Observances that follow the tithi at sunrise, or that are held the day after the Ravan Dahan, are therefore listed on the 21st.
That is why Drik Panchang lists five observances together on Wednesday 21 October: Bengal Vijayadashami, Kashi Bharat Milap, Madhvacharya Jayanti, Mysore Dasara and Vidyarambham Day. Our panchang for 21 October 2026 has the full day's tithi, nakshatra and sunrise details.
The story of Bharat Milap in the Ramayana
A kingdom refused
The Ramayana tells that King Dasharatha, bound by two boons he had once granted to Queen Kaikeyi, was forced to send his eldest son Rama into exile in the forest for fourteen years and to give the throne to Kaikeyi's son Bharata. Rama left without complaint, with Sita and his brother Lakshmana. Bharata was away at his maternal uncle's home when this happened. When he returned to find his father dead of grief and his brother gone, he was heartbroken, and he refused to accept a throne won in this way.
The meeting at Chitrakoot
In the Ayodhya Kanda, Bharata sets out with the queens, the elders and the people of Ayodhya to find Rama and bring him home. He finds him at Chitrakoot and begs him to return and rule. Rama gently refuses: their father's word must be kept, and he will complete the fourteen years. Bharata then asks for Rama's sandals, the padukas. He carries them back on his head, places them on the throne of Ayodhya and governs as Rama's regent.
Bharata does not live in the palace. He stays at Nandigram, outside the city, living simply like an ascetic, and the epic says he will enter fire if Rama does not return on time. This quiet act of loyalty is the heart of the story: a man who could have been king chose to be a servant of his brother's sandals.
The return and the embrace
After the victory over Ravana, Rama begins the journey home. In Valmiki's telling he sends Hanuman ahead to Nandigram to tell Bharata that he is coming and to see how Bharata receives the news. Bharata is overjoyed. When Rama arrives, the brothers embrace after fourteen years apart, and Bharata returns the padukas and the kingdom he had held in trust. Rama's coronation follows.
Goswami Tulsidas retells this reunion with deep feeling in the Uttar Kand of the Ramcharitmanas, and the Ramlilas of Kashi follow the Manas. Its verses on the meeting of the brothers are among the most loved in North Indian devotion. For the full epic in simple form, read the Ramayana simplified: the story that leads to Dussehra.
What Bharat Milap teaches
- Brotherhood: Rama and Bharata put each other first. Neither grasps at the throne; each wants it for the other.
- Humility: Bharata holds supreme power for fourteen years and never uses it for himself. He rules in another's name.
- Duty: Rama keeps his father's promise even when his own family begs him to break it.
- Waiting with faith: Bharata's long wait at Nandigram is a picture of devotion: steady, patient and sure that the beloved will come home.
- Reconciliation: A family torn apart by one decision is made whole again. Many families use the day to mend their own quarrels.
These are why many devotees say Bharat Milap is the true completion of Dussehra. Victory over Ravana matters because it leads Rama home to the people who waited for him.
Bharat Milap in Varanasi: the Nati Imli celebration
Varanasi has one of the richest Ramlila cultures in India. Through Navratri and the days around Dussehra, neighbourhoods across the city stage episodes of the Ramayana, and the month-long Ramlila of Ramnagar, across the Ganga, is world famous. Our Ramnagar Ramlila, Varanasi 2026 guide describes that cycle, in which the Bharat Milap is one of the best-known episodes. In 2008 UNESCO inscribed 'Ramlila, the traditional performance of the Ramayana' on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting the Ramlilas of North India, including those of Ramnagar and Varanasi.
Within the city, the Bharat Milap at Nati Imli is the best loved. Large crowds of devotees gather to watch the swaroops, the young actors who represent Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna, meet and embrace. For those who watch, it is not theatre but darshan: the brothers are seen as the deities themselves for the duration of the lila. Local tradition holds the event is centuries old, and it remains one of the most emotional moments of Kashi's festival season.
Practical points: the exact time and arrangements for 2026 are announced locally, so check local news and organisers before you go. Expect dense crowds and traffic restrictions around the area, keep children close, carry water, and follow police and volunteer instructions. If you are visiting Varanasi for the festival, many pilgrims also visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.
Many other towns in North India also stage a Bharat Milap as part of their Ramlila, usually in the days after Dussehra. For Dussehra customs across the state, see our Dussehra 2026 Uttar Pradesh guide, and for effigy burning timings our Ravan Dahan 2026 city-wise guide.
How to observe Bharat Milap at home
- Bathe and light a lamp before a picture of the Rama parivar: Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman. If possible, do this in the morning while Dashami runs (until 2:11 PM IST in India).
- Offer flowers, a little akshata (unbroken rice) and a simple sweet.
- Read the reunion episode from any Ramayana you have, Valmiki's or the Ramcharitmanas, or tell it to the family in your own words.
- Chant Rama's name, or one of the mantras below, for a few minutes.
- Close with aarti and share prasad.
- In the spirit of the day, call a brother, sister or cousin, or make peace with someone you have drifted from.
Essential versus optional: the lamp, Rama's name and the act of reconciliation are the heart of the day. The order of steps, the offerings and any fast are family customs; follow your own tradition. No materials? Sit quietly, chant Rama's name eleven times, and phone an elder or a sibling.
Mantras for the day
The thirteen-syllable chant widely sung in Rama bhakti traditions:
श्री राम जय राम जय जय राम॥
śrī rāma jaya rāma jaya jaya rāma||
Meaning: Glory to Sri Rama; victory to Rama, victory, victory to Rama.
A traditional verse of salutation to Rama:
रामाय रामभद्राय रामचन्द्राय वेधसे। रघुनाथाय नाथाय सीतायाः पतये नमः॥
Ramaya ramabhadraya ramachandraya vedhase, raghunathaya nathaya sitayah pataye namah.
Meaning: Salutations to Rama, Ramabhadra, Ramachandra, the creator; to the lord of the Raghus, the protector, the husband of Sita. Chant slowly as an act of remembrance. Its value lies in devotion, not in any promised result.
For families and children
Bharat Milap is a wonderful story for children because it is about siblings. Ask them: why did Bharata refuse a throne that was offered to him? What would they have done? Why did he keep Rama's sandals on the throne? Let them draw the padukas or act out the meeting. Younger children enjoy the image of Hanuman flying ahead with the good news. Our parents' guide to explaining Navratri and Dussehra has more ideas.
Hindus abroad
Abroad, the tithi at local sunrise can differ from India. On 21 October 2026, our panchang data shows Shukla Dashami at local sunrise in London, Dubai, Singapore, Sydney and most European cities, while in New York and Toronto Ekadashi has already begun by local sunrise. Never convert India's tithi end time into a local event time; follow the calendar of your temple or Ramlila committee. Many diaspora Ramlilas stage the Bharat Milap on a weekend close to Dussehra.
The next observance is Papankusha Ekadashi on Thursday 22 October 2026.
Frequently asked questions
When is Kashi Bharat Milap in 2026?
Drik Panchang lists Kashi Bharat Milap on Wednesday 21 October 2026, the day after the all-India Dussehra on Tuesday 20 October. Dashami tithi runs from 12:50 PM IST on 20 October to 2:11 PM IST on 21 October, so it is the tithi at sunrise on the 21st. Check local announcements in Varanasi for the exact 2026 programme.
What is Bharat Milap?
Bharat Milap means 'the meeting with Bharata'. It celebrates the moment in the Ramayana when Rama, returning after fourteen years of exile and the victory over Ravana, is reunited with his younger brother Bharata, who had ruled Ayodhya in Rama's name without ever claiming the throne.
Why is Bharat Milap celebrated after Dussehra?
Dussehra marks Rama's victory over Ravana. The Ramlila sequence then moves to the journey home, and the reunion with Bharata follows naturally. Many devotees feel this homecoming completes the meaning of Dussehra: the victory matters because it brings Rama back to the people who waited for him.
Where is the famous Bharat Milap in Varanasi held?
The best known Bharat Milap in Varanasi is the one at Nati Imli, which draws large crowds of devotees to see the brothers embrace. Local tradition holds the event is centuries old. Timings and arrangements are announced locally each year, so check with local organisers or news before you go.
Where do the padukas of Rama come into the story?
In the Ayodhya Kanda, Bharata goes to Chitrakoot to bring Rama back. When Rama refuses to break their father's word, Bharata asks for his sandals (padukas), places them on the throne and rules from Nandigram as Rama's regent for fourteen years, living simply like an ascetic until Rama returns.
How can I observe Bharat Milap at home?
Light a lamp before a picture of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman, read or tell the reunion episode from the Ramayana, chant Rama's name, and make peace with or phone a sibling or relative. The spirit of the day is love, humility and reconciliation, not elaborate ritual.
