Bengal keeps Bijoya Dashami, Varanasi celebrates Bharat Milap, Mysuru and Kerala traditions mark the close of the festival, and Madhva devotees honour Sri Madhvacharya. Wednesday 21 October 2026 is the day after Dussehra, and Dashami tithi is still running at sunrise until 2:11 PM. Bengal keeps Bijoya Dashami, Varanasi celebrates Bharat Milap, Mysuru and Kerala traditions mark the close of the festival, and Madhva devotees honour Sri Madhvacharya.
Quick answer: Wednesday 21 October 2026 is the morning after Dussehra, and in Hyderabad Shukla Dashami continues until 2:11 PM (IST), with Dhanishtha nakshatra until 7:47 PM. Drik Panchang lists Bengal Vijayadashami, Kashi Bharat Milap, Madhvacharya Jayanti, Mysore Dasara and Vidyarambham Day today. It is a day of farewell to the Goddess, of family reunions, and of honouring the guru.
If yesterday was the great victory, today is the gentle homecoming. In Bengal the Goddess returns to Kailasa and households wish one another Shubho Bijoya. In Varanasi, devotees gather to watch Rama embrace Bharata. A lamp, Rama's name and a visit to an elder are enough to keep the spirit of the day.

Why 21 October matters: the second day of Vijayadashami
Dashami tithi began at 12:50 PM on Tuesday 20 October, so the afternoon Vijay Muhurat fell on the 20th and that is the all-India Dussehra. But traditions that fix their day by the tithi at sunrise, or that need Dashami in the morning, keep their rites on the 21st. That is why five different observances share this Wednesday.
- Bengal Vijayadashami (Bijoya Dashami): after the Dashami puja, the Goddess is given a tearful farewell, women play sindoor khela, and the image is taken for immersion. The evening is for Bijoya visits and sweets. Our West Bengal Durga Puja and Bijoya Dashami guide has the full calendar, and the Bijoya Dashami sweets guide covers narkel naru and nimki.
- Kashi Bharat Milap: Varanasi's beloved reunion of Rama and Bharata, celebrated soon after Dussehra, most famously at Nati Imli. Read more in the Ramnagar Ramlila, Varanasi 2026 guide.
- Madhvacharya Jayanti: Sri Madhvacharya, the founder of the Dvaita school, is traditionally said to have been born on Vijayadashami near Udupi. Madhva mathas and families remember him with parayana and bhajans.
- Mysore Dasara: Drik lists Mysore Dasara on this date; see our Mysore Dasara 2026 day-by-day guide for the festival schedule and the Mysore Dasara 2026 guide for its history.
- Vidyarambham Day: where Dashami at sunrise is preferred, children write their first letters today. The Saraswati Puja and Vidyarambham guide and the Kerala Vijayadashami guide explain the ritual.
Religious significance
The Ramayana tradition holds that Bharata ruled Ayodhya for fourteen years as a servant of Rama's sandals, refusing the throne for himself. The reunion of the brothers is one of the most tender scenes in Hindu storytelling, and many devotees feel it is the true completion of Dussehra: victory over Ravana matters because it leads Rama home to the people who waited for him. The Bharat Milap processions are a regional custom of Varanasi, not a scriptural rite, but they are loved for exactly that reason.
In Bengal, Bijoya Dashami belongs to Shakta tradition and folk practice. The Goddess is understood as a daughter visiting her parents' home for a few days each autumn. Her departure is sad, and the customs of the day, from sindoor khela to embracing friends, turn that sadness into renewed bonds. The worship of Aparajita, the unconquered form of the Devi, is associated with Vijayadashami; our Vijayadashami mantras and Aparajita Shami puja guide has the details.
For the Madhva sampradaya, this is a guru day. Sri Madhvacharya taught that the individual soul is eternally distinct from, and dependent on, Lord Vishnu, and that devotion is the path.
Simple puja vidhi for today
- Bathe and light a ghee or oil lamp before your home altar, ideally while Dashami still runs in the morning.
- Offer flowers and a little akshata (unbroken rice) to Lord Rama, or to a picture of the Rama parivar, and to the Devi.
- If you kept a Navratri kalash or Saraswati books for puja, take them up respectfully today if your family has not done so already.
- Read the Bharat Milap episode from any Ramayana you have, or simply tell it to the family in your own words.
- Close with aarti and share prasad, ideally with a neighbour or elder.
No materials? Sit quietly, face east, and chant Rama's name 108 times on your fingers. Then phone an elder you have not spoken to in a while. That is a complete Bijoya and Bharat Milap observance in spirit.
Essential versus optional: the lamp, the name and the act of reconciliation are the heart of the day. Immersion processions, Shami leaf exchange, specific sweets and the exact sequence of steps are regional customs; follow your family's way.
Mantra for the day
Śrī Rāma jaya Rāma jaya jaya Rāma
Meaning: Glory to Sri Rama, victory to Rama, victory, victory to Rama. This thirteen-syllable chant is widely sung in Rama bhakti traditions. Chant it slowly; its value lies in remembrance, not in any promised result.
What you can do today
- Light the morning lamp before 2:11 PM, while Dashami is still running in Hyderabad.
- Send Bijoya or Dussehra greetings to friends you missed yesterday, and visit or call one elder.
- Tell children the story of Bharata keeping Rama's sandals on the throne.
- If you are in a Madhva household, read a few lines of Madhvacharya's teaching or sing a Haridasa song.
- If your child has not yet begun Vidyarambham, ask your temple whether today's session is open.
- Thank someone who worked through the festival: a priest, cook or helper.
For families and children
Today is a good day to talk about loyalty and humility. Ask children: why did Bharata refuse a throne that was offered to him? What would they have done? Younger children find comfort in the image of Durga going home to her family and returning next year. Our parents' guide to explaining Navratri and Dussehra has more ideas.

Frequently asked questions
Is Dussehra on 20 or 21 October 2026?
The all-India Dussehra (Vijayadashami) is Tuesday 20 October 2026 per Drik Panchang. Dashami tithi began at 12:50 PM on 20 October and continues until 2:11 PM IST on Wednesday 21 October, so Bengal's Bijoya Dashami, Kashi Bharat Milap and several regional observances fall on the 21st.
What is Bijoya Dashami?
It is the last day of Durga Puja in Bengal. After the Dashami puja the Goddess is bid farewell and the image is taken for immersion. Married women often play sindoor khela before the farewell, and families then exchange Bijoya greetings, touch elders' feet and share sweets.
What is Kashi Bharat Milap?
It is the Varanasi celebration of Rama's reunion with his brother Bharata after the exile, held soon after Dussehra. The Nati Imli gathering is the best known. For 2026 timings, follow local announcements.
Who was Madhvacharya?
Sri Madhvacharya was the teacher of Dvaita Vedanta, traditionally said to have been born near Udupi in Karnataka on Vijayadashami. He installed the Krishna image at Udupi, and Madhva families honour him with reading, bhajans and worship on this day.
Can I do Vidyarambham today?
Some Kerala temples and families hold Vidyarambham on the morning of 21 October because Dashami prevails at sunrise. Others held it on the 20th. Follow the date announced by your temple or family priest.
A closing reflection
Victory is only half a story; the other half is coming home. On this Dashami, may we, like Bharata, keep our love steady while we wait, and, like Rama, return to those who waited for us with open arms. Shubho Bijoya, and Jai Sri Ram.
