Quick answer: Wednesday 30 December 2026 is Kalashtami and Masik Krishna Janmashtami. In Hyderabad, Krishna Saptami ends at 12:36 PM IST and Ashtami prevails from then through the night, until 12:32 PM tomorrow. Uttara Phalguni nakshatra lasts until 3:36 PM. Evening and night are the main times of worship today.

Two very different faces of the divine share this Ashtami: Kala Bhairava, the fierce guardian who reminds us that time spares no one, and Bal Gopal, the baby Krishna whose birth at midnight brought joy to Gokulam. Together they make a thoughtful pairing on the second-last day of the year.

Religious significance

Kalashtami

Kala Bhairava is a form of Shiva, worshipped as the guardian of sacred spaces and the lord of time. The Kashi tradition holds that no pilgrimage to Varanasi is complete without his darshan, and the Kala Bhairava temple there is one of the city's most important shrines. Every Krishna Ashtami is kept as Kalashtami, with the annual Kalabhairava Jayanti, which fell on 1 December this year. Read more in our Kalabhairava Jayanti 2026 guide and the Kalabhairava temple of Kashi.

Bhairava's fierce form is protective, not threatening. Devotees approach him for discipline, fearlessness and right use of time. There is no need for fear-driven rituals.

Masik Krishna Janmashtami

According to the Bhagavata Purana, Krishna was born at midnight on Krishna Ashtami under Rohini nakshatra, in Kamsa's prison in Mathura. Devotees remember this every month on Krishna Ashtami with a simple fast and midnight worship, while the main Janmashtami falls in Bhadrapada. See our Krishna Janmashtami 2026 guide.

Puja vidhi for the evening

  • After sunset (5:52 PM in Hyderabad), light a sesame oil or mustard oil lamp before a picture of Kala Bhairava or Shiva.
  • Offer flowers and a little vibhuti, and chant the mantra below.
  • Feed a dog, if you can do so safely, as a traditional Kalashtami gesture of respect for Bhairava's vahana.
  • Later at night, place a small image of Bal Gopal in a decorated cradle or on a clean cloth.
  • Offer Bal Gopal milk, butter or curd and tulasi, and sing a short bhajan or recite his names.
  • Close with aarti and share the prasadam.

No materials? Light a single lamp, think of Bhairava as the protector of your home and Krishna as its joy, and offer both a silent prayer.

Mantra for the day

Om Kalabhairavaya Namah

Meaning: "Om, salutations to Kala Bhairava." It is a simple name-mantra for Bhairava, suited to 108 repetitions on Kalashtami. Chant it as a prayer for discipline and courage; no particular result is promised. More prayers are in how to pray to Lord Kalabhairava.

Vrat guidance

Some devotees fast through the day and eat after the evening Bhairava puja; Krishna devotees may fast until midnight. A single sattvic meal is a gentler alternative. Elderly people, pregnant women and anyone with a medical condition should not feel obliged to fast and should consult a doctor.

What you can do today

  • Light a lamp for Kala Bhairava after sunset.
  • Feed a stray dog or support an animal shelter.
  • Rock a small cradle for Bal Gopal at night with the family.
  • Review how you spent 2026, in Bhairava's spirit as lord of time, and choose one habit to change.
  • Read the fifteenth Tiruppavai pasuram at dawn if you follow Dhanurmasam.
  • Pray to Ganesha too, since it is Wednesday, before beginning the evening puja.

For families and children

Children delight in Krishna's childhood stories: the stolen butter, Yashoda's rope, the lifting of Govardhana. Let them decorate the cradle for Bal Gopal. If you feed a dog together, explain why Bhairava's companion is honoured, and teach them to be kind to animals.

Hindus abroad: Wed 30 Dec at local sunrise

Outside India, go by your local sunrise, not Indian clock times. The table gives local sunrise and sunset and the tithi and nakshatra at local sunrise, computed with HinduTone's panchang calculator, validated against Drik Panchang; festival dates abroad can differ by a day — follow your temple's panchang.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Kalashtami on 30 December when the tithi at sunrise is Saptami?

Kalashtami and Masik Krishna Janmashtami are both kept on the day Krishna Ashtami prevails at night. In Hyderabad, Ashtami begins at 12:36 PM IST on 30 December and lasts until 12:32 PM on 31 December, so the night of 30 December is Ashtami. That is why Drik Panchang lists both observances today.

Who is Kala Bhairava?

Kala Bhairava is a fierce form of Shiva, revered as the lord of time (Kala) and the guardian (kshetrapala) of Kashi. He is often shown with a dog as his vahana. His main annual festival, Kalabhairava Jayanti, was observed earlier, on 1 December 2026 (Margashirsha Krishna Ashtami in the purnimanta reckoning); every Krishna Ashtami is a monthly Kalashtami.

What is Masik Krishna Janmashtami?

It is the monthly remembrance of Krishna's birth on Krishna Ashtami, a smaller version of the great Janmashtami in Bhadrapada. Devotees keep a light fast and worship Bal Gopal (baby Krishna) around midnight.

Can I worship both Kala Bhairava and Krishna today?

Yes. Many families light a lamp for Bhairava in the evening and do a short Bal Gopal puja at night. Follow whichever your family or community traditionally keeps.

Do I need to fast?

No. Fasting on Kalashtami or Masik Janmashtami is optional. Elderly people, pregnant women and anyone with a medical condition should not feel obliged and should consult a doctor.

A closing thought

Bhairava reminds us that time is precious; Krishna reminds us to fill it with love. As 2026 ends, let both lessons guide the year ahead. Tomorrow is the final day of the year, a Thursday Ashtami.

Previous day: Panchang Tuesday 29 December 2026. Next day: Panchang Thursday 31 December 2026. Whole month: December 2026 Hindu festivals, dates and rituals.
