One Hanuman, several birthdays
Different regions remember Hanuman's birth on different days, each with its own textual and temple tradition:
| Tradition | Rule | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu, Kerala | Margazhi Amavasya, Moolam nakshatra | Thu 7 Jan 2027 |
| Karnataka (Hanumad Vratha) | Margashirsha Shukla Trayodashi | Tue 22 Dec 2026 |
| North and much of Western India | Chaitra Purnima | Tue 20 Apr 2027 |
| Andhra Pradesh, Telangana | Vaishakha Bahula Dashami | about Mon 31 May 2027 (calculated; confirm with the Telugu panchang) |
None of these is "the" correct date. Families keep the date of their own region and temple, and many devotees honour Hanuman on more than one. Our Karnataka Hanumad Vratha 2026 guide covers the December observance.
Why Margazhi and Moolam
In Tamil Vaishnava and temple tradition, Hanuman (Anjaneya, son of Anjana) is held to have been born on the Amavasya of Margazhi in Moolam nakshatra. Margazhi is already the holiest month for Vishnu worship: the month of Andal's Tiruppavai and of Vaikuntha Ekadashi. A Hanuman birthday at its close joins devotion to Rama's greatest servant with the devotion of the whole month.
Hanuman is remembered for strength used in service, for courage and for humility. As commonly told, when Sita asked how she could repay him he wanted nothing except to stay where Rama's story is told. That is why Hanuman Chalisa recitation, Ramayana reading, especially the Sundara Kandam, and the chanting of Rama's name are central to the day.
Temples known for Hanumath Jayanthi
Several Tamil Nadu temples are famous for this festival. Customs and timings are set by each temple each year, so check their announcements:
- Namakkal Anjaneyar temple: a tall standing Anjaneya in the open air facing Narasimha's cave shrine, known for a very large vadai malai and abhishekam on Hanumath Jayanthi.
- Suchindram (Thanumalayan temple, Kanyakumari district): home to a towering Hanuman figure; devotees offer butter and garlands. See our Suchindram temple page.
- Nanganallur Anjaneyar (Chennai): a large Anjaneya shrine with early-morning crowds and alankarams on the day.
- Abroad: Hanuman, Murugan and Perumal temples in Singapore, Malaysia, the USA, the UK and Australia often hold Hanumath Jayanthi pujas. Some move them to the nearest weekend.
How to celebrate Hanumath Jayanthi at home
- Bathe early. If you keep Amavasya tarpanam, do it first, then clean the altar for the Hanuman puja.
- Place a picture or idol of Hanuman, ideally with Rama, Sita and Lakshmana. Light a ghee or sesame-oil lamp.
- Offer tulsi, flowers, a betel-leaf garland or a small vadai malai, fruit (bananas are traditional) and a sweet.
- Chant Om Ham Hanumate Namah and Rama's name (below), recite the Hanuman Chalisa, or read a chapter of the Sundara Kandam.
- Do aarti, offer the prasad and share it with family and neighbours.
Making a small vadai malai
Make urad dal vadai a little smaller and thinner than usual, without the centre hole closing, and fry them crisp so they hold together. Cool them, then thread them on a clean cotton string or a banana fibre and tie the ends. Eleven, twenty-one or fifty-four vadais are common counts in families, but any number offered with devotion is fine. After the puja the vadais are shared as prasad.
Fasting and health
Some devotees fast until the evening puja, some take only fruit and milk, and many simply eat sattvic food. Fasting is optional. Children, older people, pregnant or breastfeeding women, people with diabetes or other conditions, and anyone whose medicines need food should consult a doctor first. They can keep the day with prayer and a light meal.

- A working Thursday: 7 January 2027 is a normal working day in most countries. Do a short morning prayer and keep the main puja and Chalisa for the evening.
- New Zealand: Amavasya reaches sunrise in Auckland only on Friday 8 January, so check whether your temple keeps the 7th or the 8th.
- Vadai and butter: Urad dal and ghee or butter are easy to find in Indian grocery stores; frozen vadai batter also works for a small malai.
- Group Chalisa: Many communities hold an 11- or 108-time Hanuman Chalisa recitation on the nearest weekend (9–10 January).
- Children: Tell the story of Hanuman's leap to Lanka, and let children offer the bananas or help thread the vadai malai.
