Why India and the West keep different days in 2027

Akshaya Tritiya is kept on the day the Tritiya prevails in the forenoon (purvahna), the part of the day from sunrise to midday. In India the Tritiya begins just before noon on 8 May, so it touches only the last minutes of that forenoon; on 9 May it is present from sunrise until 9:03 AM, more than three muhurtas, and Drik Panchang marks 9 May.

The same moment falls at 2:12 AM on 8 May in New York and 7:12 AM in London. There the Tritiya fills the forenoon of Saturday 8 May and is over by Sunday's sunrise, so 8 May is the day. In Sydney and Singapore it begins in the afternoon of 8 May and covers the morning of 9 May, so they follow India. In Dubai and Durban the Tritiya begins mid-morning on 8 May; Drik Panchang still chooses 8 May there, with a shorter window.

Akshaya Tritiya 2027 puja muhurat by city

The window runs from local sunrise (or from the start of Tritiya, where it begins later) to local midday, or until the Tritiya ends. Rows marked Drik are copied from Drik Panchang's city pages; the others are from our calculator, which used the same rule and matched all 14 Drik cities on the day and to within a minute on the times. North America is on daylight time in May; Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver use the new year-round clocks (UTC-5, UTC-6 and UTC-7).

Do not convert India's muhurat into your own time zone; use the row for your city. If you cannot do the puja in the morning, a sincere puja later the same day is still a full observance, and many temples abroad hold their Akshaya Tritiya programme on the nearest weekend.

A word of care: the scriptures praise charity (daana) on Akshaya Tritiya far more than shopping. Gold buying is a later custom; it does not guarantee wealth, and this page is not investment advice. Jewellers' festival offers are marketing. Buy only what you planned and can afford, keep the bill, and check the hallmark.

Why Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated

Akshaya means imperishable. Tradition holds that the merit of japa, puja, charity and good work begun on this Tritiya does not fade, so families start new ventures, enter new homes or begin learning on the day. It is one of the few days many households treat as auspicious throughout, without a separate muhurat for each act.

  • Treta Yuga: many Puranic calendars name Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya as the day the Treta Yuga began, which makes it a yugadi tithi.
  • Parashurama: the sixth avatar of Vishnu is said to have been born on this Tritiya; his jayanti is kept the evening before this year.
  • Krishna and Sudama: the poor Brahmin friend brought Krishna a handful of flattened rice (poha) and asked for nothing; he went home to find his family provided for. The story is told as a lesson in humble devotion.
  • Akshaya Patra: in the Mahabharata tradition, the Pandavas in exile received a vessel that never ran out of food, linked in popular telling with this day.
  • Kubera and Lakshmi: popular tradition says Kubera was made the keeper of wealth on this day, so many homes worship Lakshmi, Narayana and Kubera together.

These stories differ by region and family, and we tell them here in our own words. For the longer telling, read the story behind Akshaya Tritiya and the Krishna and Sudama story.

How India keeps Akshaya Tritiya

  • North and west India (Akha Teej): Lakshmi-Narayana puja, gold or silver purchase, and in Rajasthan and Gujarat many weddings, since the whole day is held auspicious.
  • Odisha: farmers begin the season's sowing, and at Puri the construction of the chariots for the Rath Yatra traditionally begins, along with the Chandan Yatra of the deities.
  • Andhra Pradesh: the Simhachalam temple near Visakhapatnam holds Chandanotsavam, the one day in the year when the deity is seen without the sandal-paste covering. Check the temple's own announcement for 2027 darshan times.
  • Uttarakhand: the Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines traditionally open for the season around Akshaya Tritiya. The temple committees announce the exact opening dates in the spring, so treat any date you see now as unconfirmed.
  • Jain tradition: Akshaya Tritiya marks the day Rishabhanatha broke his long fast with sugarcane juice, and those who keep the year-long Varshi Tapa end it on this day.

Akshaya Tritiya puja vidhi at home

  1. Bathe early and wear clean clothes. Clean the puja place and set a picture or idol of Lakshmi and Narayana (or Vishnu alone) on a fresh cloth.
  2. Place a kalash of water with mango leaves and a coconut, and light a ghee lamp and incense.
  3. Offer sandal paste, kumkum, akshata (unbroken rice), tulsi leaves for Vishnu and lotus or red flowers for Lakshmi.
  4. Offer naivedyam: fruit, a sweet such as kheer, and in many homes barley (yava) or soaked chana dal with jaggery.
  5. Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama, the Kanakadhara Stotram or the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam (first verse below). A simple "Om Namo Narayanaya" or "Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah" 108 times is also enough.
  6. If you bought gold, silver or a new item, place it before the deities during the puja.
  7. End with aarti, and share the prasad.

Charity: summer gifts are traditional on this day: water in a clay pot, buttermilk, fans, umbrellas, sandals, food grains or a meal for someone in need. Abroad, a donation to a food bank or a temple kitchen keeps the same spirit.

Health note: fasting is optional. Anyone pregnant, elderly, diabetic, unwell or on regular medication should eat normally or ask a doctor first, children should not be made to fast, and in the May heat keep drinking water.

Mahalakshmi Ashtakam, first verse

Indra's hymn to Mahalakshmi is recited widely on Akshaya Tritiya and on Fridays. The first verse, from the text published by sanskritdocuments.org:

नमस्तेऽस्तु महामाये श्रीपीठे सुरपूजिते ।
शङ्खचक्रगदाहस्ते महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तु ते ॥ १॥

namaste'stu mahāmāye śrīpīṭhe surapūjite |
śaṅkhacakragadāhaste mahālakṣmi namo'stu te || 1||

Meaning: Salutations to you, Mahamaya, seated on the holy seat of Shri and worshipped by the gods; you who hold the conch, the discus and the mace, O Mahalakshmi, salutations to you. Read the full Mahalakshmi Ashtakam with meaning and the Kanakadhara Stotram.

Akshaya Tritiya for NRI families

  • Saturday in the West: in the USA, Canada, the UK, the Gulf and South Africa the day is Saturday 8 May, so a full morning puja is easy for working families. India, Singapore and Australia keep Sunday 9 May.
  • Calling family in India: when it is Saturday evening in North America, it is already Sunday morning, Akshaya Tritiya, in India.
  • Temples: many temples abroad hold Lakshmi-Narayana abhishekam, Kanakadhara or Sahasranama parayanam on the weekend. Check their calendars.
  • Gold abroad: Indian jewellers in the USA, UK, UAE and Singapore run Akshaya Tritiya offers; compare prices and purity, and remember that a small coin or a donation is just as traditional.

Akshaya Tritiya 2027: frequently asked questions

When is Akshaya Tritiya 2027?

Akshaya Tritiya 2027 is on Sunday 9 May 2027 in India, per Drik Panchang. The Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya begins at 11:42 AM IST on Saturday 8 May and ends at 9:03 AM IST on Sunday 9 May. The Delhi puja muhurat is 5:35 AM to 9:03 AM on 9 May.

Is Akshaya Tritiya 2027 on 8 May or 9 May in the USA and UK?

Saturday 8 May. Drik Panchang lists 8 May for New York, Chicago, San Jose, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, London, Dubai and Durban, because there the Tritiya covers the forenoon of 8 May and has ended by sunrise (or soon after) on 9 May. Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand keep Sunday 9 May, as India does.

What is the best time to buy gold on Akshaya Tritiya 2027?

Drik Panchang treats the whole Tritiya as suitable: in India from 11:42 AM on 8 May to 9:03 AM on 9 May. Abroad, use your own city's Tritiya span from the table on this page. Buying gold is a custom, not a religious requirement, and it brings no guaranteed gain; buy only what you can afford, or mark the day with charity instead.

When is Parashurama Jayanti 2027?

Parashurama Jayanti is on Saturday 8 May 2027 in India (Drik Panchang), the day before Akshaya Tritiya. It is kept on the day the Tritiya prevails in the evening (pradosha), which is why the two observances fall on different days this year.

Do I need to fast on Akshaya Tritiya?

No. Some families keep a light fast until the morning puja, or eat only satvik food. Fasting is optional; anyone pregnant, elderly, diabetic, unwell or on regular medication should eat normally or ask a doctor first, and May is hot in India and the Gulf, so drink enough water.

Why is it called Akshaya?

Akshaya means 'that which does not diminish'. Tradition holds that worship, charity and good deeds begun on this Tritiya keep bearing fruit. Puranic stories link the day with the start of the Treta Yuga, Krishna's gift to Sudama, the Akshaya Patra of the Pandavas and the birth of Parashurama.
