Monday 7 December 2026 brings Masik Shivaratri together with the fourth and last Karthika Somavaram, a rare Somavara Shivaratri. Krishna Chaturdashi lasts until 04:12 AM on 8 December in Hyderabad.
Quick answer: Monday 7 December 2026 is Masik Shivaratri and the fourth and last Karthika Somavaram. In Hyderabad Krishna Chaturdashi lasts from sunrise (06:34 AM) until 04:12 AM on 8 December, so the whole night belongs to Shivaratri. Vishakha nakshatra runs until 03:48 PM, then Anuradha. Drik Panchang also lists Bala Jayanti.
Karthika is Shiva's beloved month, Monday is his weekday, and Masik Shivaratri is his monthly night. In 2026 all three meet on the same day, at the very end of the month. For families who have kept Karthika Mondays since 16 November, this is the closing and perhaps the most heartfelt Somavaram of the year.
For the detailed guide, with nishita puja, night vigil and fasting, read Karthika Masa Shivaratri 2026: Monday 7 December, the last Karthika Somavaram. All four Mondays are listed in Karthika Somavaram 2026 dates in India.

Chaturdashi holds through the night, which is what makes this the Shivaratri day. Vishti karana at sunrise is a routine panchang element; it does not affect worship of Shiva.
Religious significance
Masik Shivaratri. Every Krishna Chaturdashi, the night before the new moon, is a Shivaratri. The great annual Maha Shivaratri falls in Magha (Phalguna in North India); the monthly ones are kept in the same spirit on a smaller scale, with abhishekam, bilva, japa and a night of prayer.
Karthika Somavaram. Monday worship in Karthika is one of the best-loved Telugu traditions: an early bath, abhishekam, a lamp, and a fast or single meal. The Karthika Mahatmya, traditionally associated with the Skanda Purana, praises Karthika observances highly; the exact customs, such as ekabhuktam or naktam, are family traditions that vary.
Both together. A Somavara Shivaratri, a Shivaratri on a Monday, is traditionally regarded as especially auspicious, and in 2026 it also closes Karthika Masam. That is reason enough to make this evening's lamp a little brighter.
Bala Jayanti. Drik Panchang also lists Bala Jayanti for this date. Customs for it vary by community, so we do not prescribe a ritual here; follow your family or temple tradition if you observe it.
Simple abhishekam at home
- Bathe before sunrise if you can, as on every Karthika Monday, and light a lamp at the doorway.
- Place a Shiva linga or picture on a clean plate. Pour water, then milk, then water again, while chanting the mantra below.
- Offer bilva leaves, white flowers, vibhuti and a little sandal paste.
- Light a ghee lamp and offer fruit or simple naivedya.
- At dusk, light the Karthika deepam. If you keep the night, do another round of japa or abhishekam around midnight.
- Next morning, bathe, do a short puja and break the fast.
No materials? Water alone is a complete abhishekam in Shaiva tradition. A cup of water poured with devotion, one lamp and the Panchakshari are enough. Bilva, milk and night vigil are cherished additions, not requirements.
Mantra for the day
Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya
Meaning: 'Salutations to Shiva'. On Shivaratri many devotees chant the Panchakshari 108 or 1,008 times, or simply keep it on their lips through the night. Count is less important than attention.
Vrat guidance
Customs range from a full fast until the next morning, to fruit and milk only, to the Karthika Somavaram practice of naktam, a single meal after dusk. Choose what your body can sustain; see Karthika Somavaram upavasam rules: ekabhuktam and naktam. Elders, pregnant women, children and anyone with a medical condition should not feel obliged to fast and should consult a doctor. A night vigil can be as short as one hour of prayer.
What you can do today
- Keep the last Karthika Somavaram: early bath, abhishekam and a doorway lamp.
- Visit a Shiva temple in the evening; many temples hold special Karthika Monday abhishekams.
- Offer bilva leaves and water at home if you cannot go out.
- Chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times, or listen to the Rudram.
- Keep a midnight prayer for Masik Shivaratri, even if only for a short while.
- Float or light a lamp in water if your family keeps that Karthika custom.
- Give food, a blanket or warm clothes to someone in need as the nights grow cold.
For families and children
Let children pour a small cup of water on the linga and count bilva leaves as they offer them. Tell them the story of the lamp in Karthika, and let them light one diya themselves, under supervision. Teenagers might join a short night prayer before bed rather than a full vigil.

A month of lamps ends tonight with Shiva's own night. Whatever you managed this Karthika, one Monday or all four, offer it at his feet with a single lamp and a quiet Om Namah Shivaya.
