Quick answer: Saturday 7 November 2026 is the night before Diwali. In Hyderabad, Trayodashi ends at 10:47 AM and Chaturdashi prevails through the night, so today is Kali Chaudas, Hanuman Puja and Masik Shivaratri. The Naraka Chaturdashi oil bath and Lakshmi Puja both fall tomorrow, Sunday 8 November.
Before the light comes the clearing of the dark. Tonight's observances share one idea: remove fear, negativity and old burdens so that Lakshmi can enter a clean, calm home tomorrow. Gujarati families pray to Mahakali, many North Indian homes light a lamp for Hanuman, and Shiva devotees keep the monthly Shivaratri. Choose the form your family knows; the spirit is the same.

Religious significance
Kali Chaudas
In Gujarat, the Chaturdashi night before Diwali is Kali Chaudas, devoted to Mahakali, the fierce form of the Divine Mother who destroys what harms her devotees. Customs include a lamp for Kali, offerings of black urad and sweets, and a visit to a Hanuman or Kali temple. Our Kali Chaudas 2026 guide and Diwali in Gujarat: Kali Chaudas, Chopda Pujan and New Year explain the regional traditions in detail.
Hanuman Puja
Hanuman, who never knows fear, is a natural guardian for the night before the festival. A lamp of sesame or mustard oil, sindoor and the Hanuman Chalisa are common offerings. With the day falling on Saturday, many temples will be busy; we do not publish temple timings, so check with your temple.
Masik Shivaratri
Every month's Krishna Chaturdashi night is a small Shivaratri. Devotees do abhishekam, offer bilva leaves and chant Om Namah Shivaya, ideally around midnight (nishita kala). Tonight that prayer also serves as a quiet preparation for Diwali: Shiva as the one who burns away what is no longer needed.
Naraka Chaturdashi is tomorrow
Because Chaturdashi is still in force at sunrise on 8 November, the Naraka Chaturdashi abhyanga snanam (oil bath before dawn) is tomorrow in India, together with Tamil Deepavali and the evening Lakshmi Puja. Read the story in our Naraka Chaturdashi 2026 guide.
Puja vidhi
- Evening (essential): after the 05:42 PM sunset, light a lamp before your family deity, Kali, Hanuman or Shiva, and chant the mantra below.
- Kali Chaudas customs (optional): a lamp at a crossroads or outside the home, black urad and sweets, and in some families a little kajal applied to the children's eyes for protection.
- Hanuman (optional): sesame-oil lamp, sindoor, the Hanuman Chalisa once or eleven times.
- Masik Shivaratri (optional): water or milk abhishekam and bilva leaves near midnight, with Om Namah Shivaya.
- Practical: set out oil, ubtan or herbal paste, and fresh clothes for tomorrow's pre-dawn bath.
No materials? Turn off the lights, sit in silence for one minute, then light a single lamp and chant the mantra 21 times, asking that fear and negativity leave your home.
Mantra for the day
Om Namah Shivaya (IAST: oṃ namaḥ śivāya). Meaning: "Om, salutations to Shiva, the auspicious one." Tonight, on Masik Shivaratri, it is the most fitting chant; families keeping Kali Chaudas or Hanuman Puja may chant their own deity's name-mantra instead.
Vrat guidance
Masik Shivaratri fasting usually runs from sunrise until after the night puja. Keep it light, especially as tomorrow begins before dawn. Elderly people, pregnant women and anyone with a medical condition should not feel obliged to fast and should consult a doctor.
What you can do today
- Finish the Diwali cleaning and throw out or donate what you no longer need.
- Light a lamp for Kali or Hanuman after sunset, according to your family custom.
- Do a short Shiva abhishekam at night for Masik Shivaratri.
- Prepare oil, ubtan and new clothes for tomorrow's Naraka Chaturdashi bath.
- Check your city's Lakshmi Puja muhurat for tomorrow in our India city-wise guide.
- Sleep early: tomorrow starts before sunrise.
For families and children
Children can help with the final tidy-up and lay out tomorrow's clothes. Tell them, in a gentle way, that tonight is about letting go of fears; ask each child to name one worry and then blow out a candle together as a sign of letting it go. Avoid frightening stories; Kali and Hanuman are protectors.

Frequently asked questions
Is Naraka Chaturdashi on 7 or 8 November 2026?
In India, Drik Panchang lists Naraka Chaturdashi on Sunday 8 November, because Chaturdashi prevails at sunrise that morning (it ends at 11:27 AM IST). The pre-dawn oil bath is therefore tomorrow, on the same day as Lakshmi Puja. Tonight, Saturday, is Kali Chaudas.
What is Kali Chaudas?
Kali Chaudas is the Chaturdashi night before Diwali as kept in Gujarat and parts of western India. Families worship Mahakali, and often Hanuman, to remove fear and negative influences from the home before Lakshmi is welcomed.
Why is it also Masik Shivaratri?
Every Krishna paksha Chaturdashi that prevails at midnight is Masik Shivaratri, the monthly night of Shiva. Today Chaturdashi begins at 10:47 AM and continues through the night, so the Shivaratri is tonight.
Why is Hanuman worshipped tonight?
Drik Panchang lists Hanuman Puja on this Chaturdashi night. In parts of North and western India, Hanuman is worshipped on the night before Diwali for courage and protection, and some traditions also celebrate a Hanuman Jayanti on this tithi. It falls on a Saturday this year, already a Hanuman day for many.
Should I fast for Masik Shivaratri?
Fasting is a personal choice. Many keep a day fast and break it after the night puja; others simply do abhishekam. Anyone elderly, pregnant or with a medical condition should not feel obliged and should consult a doctor.
A closing thought
Clear the dark tonight so the light can stay tomorrow. May Mahakali, Hanuman and Shiva guard your home.
