In Hyderabad Dwadashi ends at 10:30 AM, which is also the limit for breaking yesterday's Rama Ekadashi fast, and Trayodashi prevails through the evening for Dhanteras puja, Shukra Pradosh and the Yama Deepam. Here is the panchang, what each observance means and a simple home puja.

Friday 6 November 2026 is Dhanteras, the first great day of Diwali. In Hyderabad Dwadashi ends at 10:30 AM, which is also the limit for breaking yesterday's Rama Ekadashi fast, and Trayodashi prevails through the evening for Dhanteras puja, Shukra Pradosh and the Yama Deepam.
Quick answer: Friday 6 November 2026 is Dhanteras, the first day of Diwali week. In Hyderabad, Dwadashi ends at 10:30 AM, so break yesterday's Rama Ekadashi fast before then; Trayodashi then prevails through the evening for Dhanteras puja, Shukra Pradosh and the Yama Deepam. For the evening puja muhurat in your city, see our Lakshmi Puja and Dhanteras muhurat 2026 India city-wise guide.
The lamps begin tonight. Dhanteras is about the right kind of wealth: health first (Dhanvantari), prosperity that is shared (Lakshmi), and protection for the people we love (the Yama lamp). On a Friday, Lakshmi's own day, it feels doubly hers. Our detailed Dhanteras 2026 guide covers the stories and customs in depth; this page gives you the day's panchang and a simple plan.

Religious significance
Dhanteras and Dhanvantari
Dhanteras, from dhana (wealth) and teras (thirteenth), falls on the Trayodashi of the dark fortnight, two days before the Diwali new moon. Tradition holds that Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods and patron of Ayurveda, emerged from the churning of the ocean holding the pot of amrita on this tithi, which is why many people also call it Dhanvantari Trayodashi. Lakshmi, who also arose from the churning, is worshipped with Kubera, the treasurer of wealth, in many homes.
Yama Deepam and Yama Panchaka
A popular story tells of a prince destined to die on the fourth night of his marriage. His wife lit lamps and piled her jewellery at the door, and kept him awake with stories; Yama, arriving as a serpent, was dazzled and left. Whatever its origin, the custom of a south-facing lamp for Yama on Dhanteras evening is widely kept as a prayer for the family's long life. Drik Panchang marks today as the start of the five-day Yama Panchaka that ends on Yama Dwitiya, 11 November.
Shukra Pradosh
Pradosh is the Trayodashi twilight sacred to Shiva. When it falls on a Friday (Shukravara) it is called Shukra Pradosh. Shiva devotees can offer water or milk to the lingam after sunset alongside the Lakshmi lamp; the two observances sit comfortably together.
Puja vidhi
- Morning: bath, parana (breaking the Ekadashi fast) before 10:30 AM with tulasi water and a simple meal, then a final clean of the entrance and puja area.
- Evening (essential): after the 05:43 PM sunset and within your city's muhurat, light a ghee lamp before Lakshmi and Ganesha (and Dhanvantari or Kubera if you keep them), offer kumkum, flowers and a sweet, and chant the mantra below.
- Yama Deepam (essential in many homes): light a lamp (often a four-wick lamp) outside the main door, facing south, and pray for the protection of the family.
- Optional customs: rangoli at the doorway, small footprints of Lakshmi drawn entering the home, purchase of a new vessel or coin, and a Shiva abhishekam for Pradosh.
No materials? Light a single lamp (even a candle in a safe holder) at the door after sunset, say "may health, prosperity and protection remain in this home", and chant the mantra eleven times.
Mantra for the day
Om Shri Mahalakshmyai Namah (IAST: oṃ śrī mahālakṣmyai namaḥ). Meaning: "Om, salutations to the great Goddess Lakshmi." Chant 108 times during the evening puja. It is a prayer of reverence, not a formula for guaranteed riches.
Vrat guidance
Today is a day for ending a fast, not starting one: complete the Rama Ekadashi parana before 10:30 AM. Those keeping Shukra Pradosh may fast until the evening puja, but anyone elderly, pregnant or with a medical condition should not feel obliged and should consult a doctor.
What you can do today
- Break the Rama Ekadashi fast before 10:30 AM (Hyderabad).
- Clean the main entrance and draw a rangoli for Lakshmi.
- Light the Dhanteras lamp in your city's evening muhurat, using the city-wise guide.
- Light the south-facing Yama Deepam outside the door for the family's wellbeing.
- Say a prayer to Dhanvantari for the health of the sick and of those who care for them.
- If you buy something, let it be useful, and consider donating a vessel or a meal to someone in need.
- Check the five-day plan: Naraka Chaturdashi and Lakshmi Puja on 8 November, Govardhan Puja on 10 November, Bhai Dooj on 11 November.
For families and children
Let children help with the rangoli and the Lakshmi footprints at the door, and give them the job of carrying (unlit) diyas to their places. Tell them the story of the clever wife who kept Yama away with light and stories; it is a good way to explain why we light lamps for one another. Keep matches and lit lamps with adults.

Frequently asked questions
Is Dhanteras on 6 November 2026?
Yes. In India Dhanteras (Dhana Trayodashi) is on Friday 6 November 2026. Trayodashi begins at 10:30 AM IST, when Dwadashi ends, and prevails through the evening, which is when Dhanteras puja is done.
What is the Dhanteras puja muhurat?
Dhanteras puja is done in the evening (pradosha kala) after sunset, which is 05:43 PM in Hyderabad. The exact muhurat depends on your city, so please see our city-wise Lakshmi Puja and Dhanteras muhurat guide for India rather than relying on a single time.
When should I break the Rama Ekadashi fast?
Today morning, after sunrise and before Dwadashi ends at 10:30 AM IST. Check a local panchang for the precise parana window.
What is Yama Deepam?
On the evening of Dhanteras, a lamp is lit outside the home, traditionally facing south, the direction of Yama, the lord of death, with a prayer for the protection and long life of the family. It is often called Yama Deepadan.
Do I have to buy gold or utensils on Dhanteras?
No. Buying a metal vessel or a small coin is a popular custom, but it is not a religious requirement. A clean home, a lit lamp and a sincere prayer to Lakshmi and Dhanvantari are the heart of the day.
What is Yama Panchaka?
Drik Panchang marks the beginning of Yama Panchaka today: the five-day span from Dhanteras to Yama Dwitiya (Bhai Dooj) on 11 November, through which Yama is remembered and lamps are lit.
A closing thought
The first lamp of Diwali is lit tonight. May it bring health to the body, contentment to the mind and protection to everyone under your roof.
