Panchangam 27 October 2026, Tuesday: Kartik Month Begins in North India and Masik Karthigai
Tuesday 27 October 2026 opens the holy month of Kartik for North India's purnimanta calendar and is also Masik Karthigai, the monthly Krittika lamp day. In Hyderabad, Krishna Pratipada ends at 7:01 AM and Krittika nakshatra begins at 3:39 PM. Here is the panchang, what the Kartik month means, a simple Kartik snan and evening lamp, and a table for Hindus abroad.

Quick answer: Tuesday 27 October 2026 is the first day of Kartik month in the purnimanta (North Indian) calendar and Masik Karthigai. In Hyderabad, Krishna Pratipada ends at 7:01 AM (IST) and Dwitiya follows; Bharani nakshatra runs until 3:39 PM, then Krittika. Begin the Kartik habit of an early bath and an evening lamp, and light a Karthigai deepam for Shiva and Murugan.
If one month in the Hindu year is famous for lamps, it is Kartik. Across North India, today begins a month of dawn baths, evening diyas, Tulsi worship and devotional reading, leading through Karwa Chauth, Diwali and Chhath to Kartik Purnima. Tamil homes also light lamps this evening, because the moon enters Krittika, the star of fire. Two traditions, one flame.

Kartik month begins: what changes today
Hindu calendars name months in two ways. In the purnimanta system, common in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab and Delhi, a month runs from the day after one full moon to the next full moon, so Kartik starts today. In the amanta system of the Deccan and much of the South, months run new moon to new moon, so Telugu Karthika Masam begins after Diwali, on Tuesday 10 November. The festivals fall on the same days; only the month names differ in the dark fortnight.
Gaudiya Vaishnavas observe this period as Damodar month, offering ghee lamps to Krishna as Damodara; see our Damodar month 2026 guide. In Odisha, the Kartika month is kept with Habisha and lamp customs, explained in the Kartika month in Odisha guide. The traditional praise of the month is gathered in the Karthika Mahatmya stories from the Skanda Purana.
Masik Karthigai: the monthly lamp
Krittika (Karthigai in Tamil) is the nakshatra of the six star-maidens who, in the Skanda tradition, nursed the infant Murugan, which is why he is called Kartikeya. Its presiding deity is Agni, the sacred fire. Every month when the moon reaches Krittika, Tamil devotees light lamps at dusk and visit Murugan and Shiva temples. In Hyderabad, Krittika begins at 3:39 PM, so the evening lamp falls within it.

Religious significance
Kartik is praised in Puranic literature, especially the Kartika Mahatmya traditionally attached to the Skanda and Padma Puranas, as a month dear to Vishnu, and in Shaiva tradition it is equally sacred to Shiva. The lamp is the common symbol: a small flame offered in the dark half of the year as a sign that knowledge and devotion can light any darkness. Tuesday, Mangalavara, is also a traditional day for Murugan in Tamil homes and for Hanuman in North India, so the weekday fits naturally.
Bharani, the morning's nakshatra, is presided over by Yama, the lord of dharma, and Krittika by Agni. Moving from Yama's star to Agni's star on the first day of Kartik is a quiet reminder of the month's purpose: to live rightly, and to keep the inner fire of devotion burning.
Simple puja vidhi: Kartik snan and evening deepam
- Wake early and bathe before or around sunrise (6:13 AM in Hyderabad). Kartik snan is traditionally taken in a river, but a home bath with a prayer to the sacred rivers is the common practice.
- Offer water to the rising sun and to Tulsi, and light a small lamp near the Tulsi plant if you have one.
- Go about your day; keep food simple if you are observing Kartik niyam.
- At dusk, after Krittika has begun, light a ghee or oil lamp before Shiva, Murugan or your family deity, and one at the entrance.
- Chant the mantra below and offer a flower and a little fruit or jaggery.
No materials? One lamp is enough. If you cannot light a flame, switch on a small light at dusk with a prayer, and sit before it for a few minutes.
Essential versus optional: the dawn bath and the evening lamp are the heart of Kartik. River snan, daily Tulsi lamps, a month-long food vow and specific readings are customs that vary by family and region.
Mantra for the day
Oṃ Namaḥ Śivāya
Meaning: Om, salutations to Shiva, the auspicious one. The panchakshari mantra suits both the Shiva worship of Kartik and the Karthigai lamp, which in Tamil tradition recalls Shiva as an endless column of light. Chant it before the lamp, with attention rather than counting for results.
What you can do today
- Start a 30-day Kartik habit: one early bath and one evening lamp each day until Kartik Purnima.
- Place a Tulsi plant where you can light a lamp beside it every evening.
- Light a Karthigai deepam at dusk, after Krittika begins at 3:39 PM.
- Visit a Murugan, Shiva or Hanuman temple, as Tuesday is dear to all three in different regions.
- Begin reading a short passage from the Kartik Mahatmya or the Bhagavad Gita each day.
- Make a list of Kartik festivals ahead: Atla Tadde tomorrow, Karwa Chauth on Thursday 29 October and Diwali on Sunday 8 November.
For families and children
Give each child their own small clay lamp for Kartik and let them light it (with supervision) every evening. Tell them the story of the six Krittika sisters who cared for baby Murugan, and point out the Pleiades star cluster, the Krittika of Indian astronomy, which can be seen in the night sky at this time of year. Our Kartikeya explainer offers more stories.

Frequently asked questions
Does Kartik month begin on 27 October 2026?
Yes, in the purnimanta calendar used in most of North India, Kartik begins with Krishna Pratipada on Tuesday 27 October 2026, as listed by Drik Panchang. In the amanta calendar of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra, the month is still Ashwina, and Telugu Karthika Masam begins on Tuesday 10 November.
Is Diwali in Kartik month?
Yes. Diwali 2026, Sunday 8 November in India, falls in the dark fortnight of Kartik by the purnimanta count, which the amanta calendar calls the dark fortnight of Ashwina. It is the same night in both; only the month name differs.
What is Masik Karthigai?
Masik Karthigai is the monthly day when the Moon is in Krittika (Karthigai) nakshatra. Tamil devotees light lamps in the evening and worship Lord Murugan, who was nursed by the six Krittika maidens, and Lord Shiva. The great annual Karthigai Deepam comes in the Tamil month of Karthigai.
What are the main Kartik month practices?
Common practices include an early-morning bath (Kartik snan), lighting lamps in the evening (deepdaan), worship of Tulsi and Vishnu, reading the Kartik Mahatmya and simple food. Families follow different combinations, and none is compulsory.
Is Krittika nakshatra at sunrise today abroad?
In New York and Toronto, Krittika is already current at local sunrise and Dwitiya has begun, so the Masik Karthigai day there may differ from India. Follow your temple's panchang.
A closing reflection
A month of lamps begins with a single one. Light it today, and let it remind you each evening that the smallest steady flame is stronger than the darkest night. Om Namah Shivaya.
