The Divine Grace of Shravan Putrada Ekadashi: A Tale of Faith and Blessings

In the Shelter of Dharma and Divine Mercy
In the heart of Sanatana Dharma, where every day is a step toward the Divine, there exists a sacred day—a doorway of grace and redemption—Shravan Putrada Ekadashi. Falling in the holy month of Shravan, a month soaked in devotion to Lord Shiva and kissed by monsoon rains, this Ekadashi stands apart for its power to bless couples with the divine gift of children and cleanse lifetimes of karmic burdens.
To understand its significance, let us journey back into an age of kings and sages, of silent prayers and loud miracles…
The Kingdom of Mahidhara: A King’s Silent Sorrow
Long ago, in the lush, verdant kingdom of Mahidhara, ruled a noble and wise monarch—King Mahijit. His people adored him, his realm flourished, and peace reigned over his lands. Yet within the marble walls of the palace, there echoed a hollow silence. Despite years of devoted marriage, the king and queen remained childless—a pain too heavy for their hearts, and too delicate to express.
They had turned every stone—performed yajnas, donated to the poor, and offered fervent prayers—but their prayers remained unanswered. What remained was hope, and a deep yearning.
The Arrival of Sage Lomesh: Wisdom Beyond Time
One sacred evening, with the rain gently tapping on the palace windows and the scent of wet earth hanging in the air, the king’s anguish became visible to his courtiers. In reverence and concern, they invited a revered Rishi Lomesh, known for his divine vision and deep yogic insight.
Sage Lomesh closed his eyes, his consciousness traveling across dimensions and lifetimes. Moments later, he opened them, his voice calm yet piercing with truth:
“O King, in a past birth, you once denied water to a thirsty cow near a holy river. That single act, done without malice, created a ripple of karma, which now manifests as this sorrow.”
The king bowed his head in silence, overwhelmed. But the sage smiled gently.
“Do not despair. The path of atonement and grace lies before you. Soon approaches the sacred day of Shravan Putrada Ekadashi—a day when Lord Vishnu opens the doors of divine blessings. Observe this day with unwavering devotion, and your soul shall be freed, your desire fulfilled.”
The Sacred Fast of Shravan Putrada Ekadashi
With faith rekindled in their hearts, the royal couple awaited the eleventh lunar day of the bright fortnight in the month of Shravan.
When the day arrived, they awoke before sunrise, bathed in holy water, and took a sankalp (vow) to observe the Ekadashi vrat with full devotion. The palace temple was adorned with marigolds, tulsi leaves, and ghee lamps, glowing like the light of a hundred suns.
The queen, draped in a simple silk saree, stood before the murti of Lord Vishnu, eyes filled with tears and hope.
The king, with humility, recited the Vishnu Sahasranama, each name a mantra, each syllable a surrender.
They observed a nirjala fast, abstaining from grains, beans, and all cooked food, sustaining themselves only on fruits and milk. Their day was filled with kirtan, scriptural reading, and devotional silence.
As night enveloped the palace, they remained awake in vigil, singing bhajans, meditating upon Lord Vishnu, visualizing His majestic form—reclining on Ananta Shesha, holding the conch (Shankha), discus (Chakra), mace (Gada), and lotus (Padma)—each symbol a message of cosmic harmony.
The Blessing of a New Dawn
With dawn came Dwadashi—the twelfth day. They offered a humble meal to a Brahmin, gave dakshina, and broke their fast with simple, sattvic food.
And then… a great peace descended.
Weeks passed, and soon, the queen conceived. Nine months later, the kingdom of Mahidhara echoed with the divine cries of a newborn—a radiant prince, whose presence was said to be a gift from Vishnu Himself.
He grew to be a protector of Dharma, a devoted son, and a beacon of righteousness.
A Fast for All Seekers: Not Just for Progeny
The story of Shravan Putrada Ekadashi is not merely a fertility tale. It is a reminder of how devotion, fasting, and repentance can transform karma, awaken grace, and renew life’s direction.
In today’s times, devotees still observe this Ekadashi to seek:
- Children and family blessings
- Harmonious relationships
- Emotional healing
- Spiritual progress
By offering Tulsi leaves, chanting Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, and meditating upon Vishnu, even the heaviest burdens can be lifted.
The rain-soaked month of Shravan, so dear to Lord Shiva, amplifies the grace of Lord Vishnu, creating a cosmic balance of Bhakti (devotion) and Shakti (energy).
