The five-day festival runs from Dhanteras on Friday, November 6 to Bhai Dooj on Tuesday, November 10. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is 5:17–7:03 PM in Toronto and 5:19–7:05 PM in Brampton. Diwali 2026 dates in Canada: the five-day calendar

Govatsa Dwadashi (Vasu Baras), which many Maharashtrian and Gujarati families treat as the start of the Diwali season, falls on Thursday, November 5. The night of Kali Chaudas and Hanuman Puja depends on your time zone: Drik Panchang's Calgary calendar places it on Friday, November 6, while calendars for the Eastern time zone place it on Saturday, November 7. The November 8 date for Lakshmi Puja is the same everywhere in Canada.

Is Diwali on November 7 or November 8 in Canada?

It is November 8. The Amavasya (new moon) tithi begins at 12:57 AM Eastern Time on November 8 and ends at 2:01 AM Eastern Time on November 9. Lakshmi Puja is performed on the evening when Amavasya prevails during Pradosh Kaal, the period after sunset. In Alberta and British Columbia, Amavasya begins at 10:57 PM on Saturday, November 7, after that evening's Pradosh Kaal has ended, so the puja falls on the evening of Sunday, November 8 across the country.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat 2026 in Canadian cities

Lakshmi Puja is performed during Pradosh Kaal, ideally while Vrishabha, a fixed (sthira) sign, is rising. Because the muhurat follows local sunset, it changes from city to city.

B.C. families, check your app. British Columbia moved to year-round Pacific time (UTC−7) and will not turn its clocks back on November 1, 2026. Some panchang websites still calculate B.C. on the old winter offset (UTC−8) and show Vancouver's muhurat starting around 4:55 PM. On your clock this November, the correct window is 5:55–7:35 PM.

• Pradosh Kaal runs from 4:59 to 7:48 PM in Toronto and from 5:40 to 8:35 PM in Vancouver.
• Nishita (midnight) muhurat, preferred for Kali Puja, runs from 11:34 PM to 12:30 AM in Toronto. In Alberta and B.C., Amavasya ends at 12:01 AM, close to or before the local midnight window, so check the Kali Puja schedule with your Bengali association.
• Nearby cities such as Markham, Vaughan, Oakville and Burnaby are usually within a few minutes of the listed city. For exact timings, use a panchang set to your own city or check today's panchangam.

Is Diwali a statutory holiday in Canada in 2026?

No. Diwali is not a statutory holiday federally or in any province or territory, so schools, offices and businesses keep their normal schedules. Recognition takes other forms:

• The Prime Minister's Diwali message. Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a Diwali statement on October 20, 2025, recognizing the contributions of Hindu, Jain, Sikh and Buddhist Canadians. Watch for the 2026 message around November 8.
• Hindu Heritage Month. The federal government marks November as Hindu Heritage Month, and Diwali 2026 falls in its second week. The minister's 2025 statement opening the month traced Hindu communities' roots in Canada back to the first South Asian immigrants in 1903.
• Provincial leaders. Premiers also mark the day; B.C. Premier David Eby issued a Diwali message in 2025.
• Parliament Hill. Members of Parliament have hosted Diwali celebrations on Parliament Hill in past years.
• School and work. Because Diwali falls on a Sunday, most families won't need time off for Lakshmi Puja. For Govardhan Puja and Gujarati New Year (Monday, November 9) or Bhai Dooj (Tuesday, November 10), ask your school or employer about religious accommodation.

• Hindu Society of Manitoba Diwali Mela, RBC Convention Centre, Winnipeg. Thousands attended the 2025 edition on Saturday, October 11.
• City of Brampton's Diwali celebration. After banning personal fireworks, the city began hosting its own Diwali event with a professional fireworks show, including a Diwali Mela at Sesquicentennial Park in 2023.
• Festival of Lights – Diwali, Montreal Eaton Centre and Time Out Market Montréal. The free first edition ran October 18–19, 2025, with Bollywood dance, workshops and a DJ night.
• Halifax Diwali Mela, Olympic Hall Community Centre. The 2025 edition ran in mid-October with cultural vendors, food and family activities.
• India Canada Association of Saskatchewan's Diwali evening in Regina, with music, dancing and food.
• Other Diwali RazzMatazz editions, including Niagara Falls and Brampton, listed by the Canada Diwali organizers.
• Sparq Productions' Diwali gala in Calgary, which held a Diwali Masquerade dinner and dance on October 31, 2025.

Central Canada: Diwali 2026 in Ontario and Quebec

Diwali 2026 in Ontario runs from temple Annakut programs in Etobicoke and Richmond Hill to banquet-hall galas in Brampton and Mississauga.

Toronto

• Temples: BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Etobicoke, a hand-carved stone mandir, draws large crowds for Diwali darshan and for the Annakut offering on Govardhan Puja (Monday, November 9).
• Scarborough: Home to a large Tamil community, many with roots in Sri Lanka, Scarborough celebrates Deepavali on Naraka Chaturdashi (Saturday, November 7) with an early-morning oil bath, new clothes and temple visits.
• Indo-Caribbean families with roots in Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago celebrate Divali, as it is often spelled in the Caribbean, at mandirs across the GTA.
• Shopping: Gerrard India Bazaar on Gerrard Street East is the city's classic stop for sweets, diyas and festive clothes.
• Parties: Ticketed Diwali parties are listed for the weekend of November 6–7; check Eventbrite for the latest.
• Muhurat: Lakshmi Puja in Toronto runs from 5:17 to 7:03 PM, with Pradosh Kaal from 4:59 to 7:48 PM.
• Fireworks: Toronto limits when and where residents can set off fireworks, so check the City of Toronto's current rules before Diwali.

Brampton

Brampton has one of Canada's largest South Asian communities, and its Diwali has looked different since the city banned personal fireworks.

• Fireworks ban: Brampton's bylaw prohibits using, selling, possessing or setting off fireworks, including on Diwali. Sparklers are allowed. Fines run from $500 to $1,000 and can reach $100,000 if a court summons is issued.
• City celebration: In place of backyard fireworks, the city has hosted its own Diwali celebration with a professional fireworks show, including a Diwali Mela at Sesquicentennial Park in 2023. Watch the city's events page for 2026 plans.
• Temples: Hindu Sabha Mandir and Brampton Triveni Mandir are among the city's Diwali gathering places.
• 2026 listings: Event platforms list a free Diwali and Karwa Chauth bazaar at Noor Convention Centre (October 24–25) and Jashan-E-Diwali at Chandni Convention Centre (Friday, November 6). Confirm with the organizers.
• Muhurat: Lakshmi Puja in Brampton runs from 5:19 to 7:05 PM, with Pradosh Kaal from 5:01 to 7:50 PM.

Mississauga

• Diwali RazzMatazz Mississauga: The Canada Diwali organizers list their Mississauga festival for October 2026, with performances and family activities in central Mississauga. Their site shows both October 3–5 and October 9–11, so confirm the date.
• Galas: A Pre Diwali Gala Night is listed for Saturday, October 3 at the Eros Convention Centre.
• Temple: The Hindu Heritage Centre is one of the city's main places for Lakshmi Puja.
• Fireworks: Mississauga has allowed residents to set off fireworks on their own property on Diwali (until 11 p.m. under the rules reported in 2024), but not on streets or in parks without a permit.

• Temple: The Hindu Temple of Ottawa-Carleton is the city's main gathering place for Lakshmi Puja.
• Parliament Hill: Members of Parliament have hosted Diwali celebrations on the Hill in past years, and the Prime Minister's Diwali message is issued from Ottawa.
• Gatineau: Families across the river in Quebec usually join Ottawa's temple programs.
• Muhurat: Lakshmi Puja in Ottawa runs from 4:58 to 6:42 PM.

Hamilton, Niagara, Waterloo Region, London and Windsor

• Hamilton: Local Hindu temples hold Diwali pujas, and the muhurat runs from 5:21 to 7:07 PM.
• Niagara: The Canada Diwali organizers also run a Diwali RazzMatazz edition in Niagara Falls.
• Waterloo Region and Guelph: Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph celebrate through temples, India associations and student groups at the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Guelph.
• London and Windsor: Community associations and campus groups host Diwali nights. In London, the muhurat runs from 5:27 to 7:13 PM.

Kingston, Peterborough, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Quebec

Montreal (Montréal)

• Festival of Lights – Diwali: In October 2025, the Montreal Eaton Centre and Time Out Market Montréal hosted their first free Diwali weekend, with Bollywood dance shows, henna and chai workshops, an artisan market and a DJ night. Watch for a 2026 edition.
• Where families gather: Parc-Extension, one of Montreal's main South Asian neighbourhoods, is the go-to area for sweets and festive shopping, and the West Island and Laval have growing communities.
• Campus events: South Asian student associations at McGill, Concordia and Université de Montréal host Diwali nights, some open to the public.
• Muhurat: Lakshmi Puja in Montreal runs from 4:49 to 6:34 PM, one of the earliest windows of any major Canadian city because of Montreal's early sunset.

Quebec City, Gatineau and Sherbrooke

Smaller communities in Quebec City, Sherbrooke and Trois-Rivières celebrate with home pujas and student events at Université Laval and Université de Sherbrooke. Gatineau families often join Ottawa's temple programs.

Western Canada: Diwali 2026 in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba

Western Canada's Diwali runs from Diwali Fest's free shows in Metro Vancouver to the Hindu Society of Manitoba's mela in Winnipeg. It is also where this year's clock change matters most.

British Columbia

British Columbia has one of Canada's largest South Asian communities, centred on Surrey, and 2026 is its first Diwali on year-round Pacific time (UTC−7). Because clocks don't fall back on November 1, sunset and the puja window come about an hour later on the clock than in past Novembers.

Surrey, Delta and the Fraser Valley

• Diwali Fest in Surrey: Free Diwali Fest shows on Sunday, November 1 at the Surrey Arts Centre (13750 88 Avenue) and Sunday, November 15 at Surrey City Hall (13450 104 Avenue), both in the afternoon.
• Temples and gurdwaras: Lakshmi Narayan Mandir is one of Surrey's Hindu temples, and the city's gurdwaras mark Bandi Chhor Divas on the same day as Diwali.
• Indo-Fijian families in Surrey and Delta celebrate Diwali with community programs and home pujas.
• Also: Delta, Langley and Abbotsford communities celebrate through temples and associations.
• Muhurat: Lakshmi Puja in Surrey runs from 5:54 to 7:35 PM on the new UTC−7 clock.

Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and the Tri-Cities

• Diwali Fest in Vancouver: Saturday, November 7 at 2 PM at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Yaletown. The 2025 edition was free with pre-registration.
• New Westminster: Diwali Fest celebrates at the Anvil Centre on Saturday, October 24, with a theme drawn from South Asian royal traditions.
• Coquitlam: Diwali Fest's evening show is on Thursday, November 5 at the Evergreen Cultural Centre.
• Shopping: The Punjabi Market on Main Street near 49th Avenue is Vancouver's classic stop for sweets and festive clothes.
• Campus events: UBC and SFU student groups host Diwali nights.
• Muhurat: Lakshmi Puja in Vancouver runs from 5:55 to 7:35 PM, with Pradosh Kaal from 5:40 to 8:35 PM.

Victoria, Kelowna and the rest of B.C.

Victoria, Kamloops, Kelowna, Prince George and the Kootenays have smaller communities that celebrate with home pujas, India association events and campus gatherings at UVic, UBC Okanagan and UNBC. The muhurat runs from 5:59 to 7:40 PM in Victoria and 5:38 to 7:18 PM in Kelowna. Areas of B.C. that keep Mountain time, such as the Peace region and the East Kootenays, are also on UTC−7 in November.

Alberta

Alberta's Diwali centres on Calgary and Edmonton. In November, Mountain Standard Time (UTC−7) now matches B.C.'s clock.

Calgary

• Where families gather: Northeast Calgary, including Saddle Ridge, Taradale and the area around the Genesis Centre, is the heart of the city's South Asian community.
• Temples: Calgary's Hindu temples and cultural societies hold Lakshmi Puja and Annakut programs.

Red Deer, Lethbridge, Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie celebrate through India associations, temples and student groups. Nepali and Bhutanese-Nepali families in Alberta celebrate Tihar over the same five days.

Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan stays on Central Standard Time (UTC−6) all year, so its clocks don't change on November 1.

• Regina: The India Canada Association of Saskatchewan has hosted a Diwali evening of music, dancing and food, open to friends and colleagues of every background. Lakshmi Puja in Regina runs from 5:37 to 7:16 PM.

Manitoba

• Diwali Mela: The Hindu Society of Manitoba's Diwali Mela at the RBC Convention Centre drew thousands in 2025. Watch for the 2026 date.
• Temple: The Hindu Society of Manitoba's temple in Winnipeg holds Lakshmi Puja and festival programs.
• Also: Brandon and Steinbach have smaller community gatherings.
• Muhurat: Lakshmi Puja in Winnipeg runs from 5:09 to 6:49 PM.

Atlantic Canada: Diwali 2026 in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, P.E.I. and Newfoundland and Labrador

Atlantic Canada's Indo-Canadian communities have grown quickly, helped by international students, and Diwali is celebrated in community halls and on campuses.

Nova Scotia

• Halifax Diwali Mela: The 2025 mela was held in mid-October at the Olympic Hall Community Centre, with cultural vendors, food and family activities. Watch for the 2026 date.
• Campus events: Dalhousie and Saint Mary's student groups host Diwali nights.
• Also: Sydney, home to Cape Breton University's large Indian student community, and Antigonish have smaller celebrations.
• Muhurat: Lakshmi Puja in Halifax runs from 5:12 to 6:57 PM Atlantic Time.

New Brunswick

Moncton, Fredericton and Saint John have growing communities that celebrate with India association events, home pujas and student gatherings at the University of New Brunswick and Université de Moncton. Lakshmi Puja in Moncton runs from 5:12 to 6:56 PM Atlantic Time.

Prince Edward Island

Charlottetown's community, including many University of Prince Edward Island students, celebrates with potlucks, cultural evenings and home pujas. Lakshmi Puja in Charlottetown runs from 5:05 to 6:49 PM Atlantic Time.

Newfoundland and Labrador

In St. John's, families and Memorial University students mark Diwali with community gatherings and home pujas. Newfoundland Time is UTC−3:30, so Amavasya runs from 2:27 AM on November 8 to 3:31 AM on November 9, and Lakshmi Puja in St. John's runs from 4:50 to 6:32 PM. Labrador communities on Atlantic Time should use Atlantic timings.

Northern Canada: Diwali 2026 in Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut

The North's Indo-Canadian communities are small, and Diwali is celebrated mostly at home and among friends. At these latitudes, sunset comes early and the Vrishabha window is short, so local timings matter.

Yukon

In Whitehorse, families celebrate with home pujas and community potlucks. Yukon has kept UTC−7 year-round since 2020, so Amavasya runs from 10:57 PM on November 7 to 12:01 AM on November 9. Lakshmi Puja in Whitehorse runs from 5:46 to 7:02 PM.

Northwest Territories

Yellowknife's small community marks Diwali with home pujas and shared dinners. The territory is on Mountain Standard Time in November, the sun sets in Yellowknife around 4:10 PM, and Lakshmi Puja runs from 4:10 to 5:18 PM.

Nunavut

In Iqaluit, which is on Eastern Time, the sun sets around 2:58 PM on November 8, so the Lakshmi Puja window of 2:58 to 3:54 PM falls in the middle of the afternoon. Nunavut spans three time zones, so families in Rankin Inlet or Cambridge Bay should use a panchang set to their own community.

How to find Diwali 2026 events near you

• Start with your temple. Most temples publish their Lakshmi Puja, Annakut and cultural program schedules by mid-October. Search the HinduTone temple directory to find one near you.
• Check regional associations. Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayali, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi and Indo-Caribbean associations each host their own Diwali nights.
• Look at city and festival calendars. Diwali Fest in Metro Vancouver, the City of Brampton and the City of Edmonton all publish Diwali information.

Diwali in Canada is not one festival but many, shaped by the traditions families bring from India, Sri Lanka, the Caribbean, Fiji, Nepal and beyond.

• Punjabi Hindu families centre the night on Lakshmi–Ganesha puja and the story of Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya, and GTA and Lower Mainland melas often add Bollywood and bhangra performances.
• Sikh families celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas at gurdwaras on the same day, with kirtan and illuminations.
• Gujarati families perform Chopda Pujan on Diwali and greet the New Year (Bestu Varas) on November 9 with "Saal Mubarak." BAPS mandirs offer Annakut, a mountain of vegetarian dishes presented to the deity.

Fireworks, diyas and winter safety

• Know your bylaw. Each municipality sets its own fireworks rules, and they change often. Brampton bans personal fireworks entirely (sparklers are allowed), Mississauga has allowed them on private property on Diwali, and other cities require permits or limit them to certain days.
• Choose community shows. City-run and festival fireworks are the safest way to enjoy them, and Brampton has hosted its own Diwali fireworks show in place of backyard displays.
• Think about air quality. Environment Canada has previously warned of high air pollution levels across the GTA linked to Diwali fireworks.
