Karthika Masam is regarded as one of the most sacred months in the Hindu calendar, usually falling between October and November. Dedicated especially to Lord Shiva (and also dear to Lord Vishnu), it is held to be highly auspicious for spiritual practice. Many NRIs observe it at home to stay connected with Hindu tradition.
Why Karthika Masam Is Important
- It is considered especially dear to Lord Shiva.
- Lighting a deepam (oil lamp) daily through the month is held to be highly meritorious.

- Tradition holds that good deeds in this month carry multiplied merit.
Karthika Vratham — Simple Options for NRIs
- Deepa Vratham — light a lamp daily before Tulsi or Lord Shiva (easy and highly recommended).
- Phalahara Vratham — fruits, milk and dry fruits only (suits most).
- Simple Vratham — avoid non-vegetarian food, onion and garlic; light a lamp daily.
- Strict fasting (e.g. nirjala) only if your health permits.
Simple Pujas You Can Do at Home
- Daily Deepa Puja: light a ghee or sesame-oil lamp before Lord Shiva or the Tulsi plant each evening.
- Shiva Abhishekam: with water, milk, curd, honey and ghee, chanting "Om Namah Shivaya".

- Kartika Deepam: on the full-moon day, light many lamps in and around the home.
An Easy Daily Routine for Busy NRIs

- Evening: light a lamp and offer water to Tulsi.
- Before sleep: read or listen to a portion of the Shiva Purana or Shiva bhajans.
Note: customs vary by region and family tradition; follow what your elders or purohit advise. Confirm the month’s exact dates with a panchang each year.
