The Pookalam is Kerala's living flower rangoli — laid at the entrance of every Malayali home during the ten days of Onam, growing one concentric ring per day from Atham to Thiruvonam. This guide covers the day-by-day flower rules, five layout patterns from beginner to Thiruvonam-grade, and Onathappan placement.

The Ten-Day Pookalam Growth (Atham → Thiruvonam 2026)

  • Day 1 · Atham (Wed 19 Aug 2026): A single small circle of yellow flowers — typically Thumba (Leucas), Chethi (Ixora yellow), or marigold. Represents the ripening harvest.
  • Day 2 · Chithira (20 Aug): Add a second concentric ring — red Chethi or Arali (oleander). Two rings total.
  • Day 3 · Chodhi (21 Aug): Third ring — white Thulasi or jasmine buds. Three rings.
  • Day 4 · Vishakam (22 Aug): Fourth ring — purple or blue (Aparajita / butterfly pea, or crushed Neelathumba). Design is now visibly complex.
  • Day 5 · Anizham (23 Aug): Add geometric petal-motifs at the outer edge — the Pookalam takes a defined shape (star, lotus, sun).
  • Day 6 · Thrikketta (24 Aug): Add a border ring in mixed colours; sacred conch or lamp motif at cardinal points.
  • Day 7 · Moolam (25 Aug): Add rangoli-style flourishes between rings; the design begins looking mature.
  • Day 8 · Pooradam (26 Aug): Onathappan (small clay Mahabali idol) is placed at the exact centre. Family gathers.
  • Day 9 · Uthradam (27 Aug): Ninth ring added — refresh centre flowers. Lamp lit at Onathappan for the evening welcome.
  • Day 10 · Thiruvonam (28 Aug): The tenth and final ring — the largest, boldest design of the ten days. Full Pookalam with Onathappan, lamp and complete floral border.

Flower Selection Rules

Traditional Kerala Pookalams use ONLY these flowers — factory dyes and non-native flowers are considered non-traditional:

  • Yellow: Thumba (Leucas aspera) — the most sacred; marigold; yellow Chethi; sunflower petals.
  • Red: red Chethi (Ixora), Arali (oleander), red rose petals.
  • White: Thulasi (holy basil), jasmine buds, white Chethi, Mullapoo.
  • Purple / blue: Aparajita (butterfly pea), Neelathumba, purple orchid.
  • Orange: marigold, orange rose petals.
  • Green: mango leaves, tulasi tender shoots — used for filler.

Five Pookalam Design Patterns

1. Beginner — 6-Ring Concentric

The simplest and most traditional. Six concentric rings in yellow → red → white → yellow → red → purple. Great for first-timers and apartments.

2. Star Pookalam (7-ring)

Central circle expanded into a six-pointed or eight-pointed star. Alternating colours between star points and gaps. Popular in Trivandrum tradition.

3. Lotus Pookalam (10-ring)

Eight-petal lotus at centre; concentric rings radiate outward. The most sacred design — associated with Devi and Vishnu.

4. Onathappan Centred (Thiruvonam design)

The clay Mahabali idol at the exact geometric centre. Rings and floral motifs radiate outward. The traditional Thiruvonam design.

5. Modern Competitive Pookalam

Large-scale designs for schools, colleges and society competitions — 12 to 15 feet diameter, with intricate character portraits (Mahabali, Ganesha, Devi), regional map outlines, or thematic borders. Requires 15+ people and 12+ hours of laying time.

How Big Should Your Pookalam Be?

  • Apartment doorstep: 2 to 3 feet diameter — 6-ring concentric or star.
  • Bungalow or independent-house entrance: 4 to 6 feet — 8 to 10 rings, Onathappan centred.
  • Temple or community hall: 8 to 12 feet — full lotus with all 10 rings.
  • Competition-scale: 12 to 20 feet — themed with borders and portraits.

Onathappan — the Clay Mahabali

The Onathappan (also called Thrikkakara Appan) is a small pyramidal clay idol representing King Mahabali. It is placed at the Pookalam centre on Pooradam (Day 8, 26 Aug 2026) — the day Mahabali is symbolically welcomed home. Families light a small oil lamp in front of the Onathappan on Uthradam evening (27 Aug), and the flame stays lit through Thiruvonam day.

In many Kerala homes the Onathappan is worshipped daily during Onam with sandalwood paste, akshatam, and small offerings of banana. On the third day after Thiruvonam (Chathayam), the Onathappan is respectfully immersed in a river, pond, or the sea.

For NRI Families — Pookalam Without Fresh Kerala Flowers

Living outside India? Substitutions that work:

  • Rose petals (locally available worldwide) as base ring
  • Marigold + chrysanthemum for yellow and orange rings
  • Lavender or purple orchid petals for the purple ring
  • Dyed rice or coloured sand for outermost geometric borders (school-friendly)
  • Paper Onathappan when a clay idol isn't available — many Kerala Samajams in USA/UK/Canada import them ahead of Onam
