Surya's Preferred Offerings
Arghya - The Central Offering
Arghya is the water offering to the rising sun. Traditional method: fill copper lota with water + few grains of red sandalwood + red flowers + a coin. Stand facing east, hold lota above head, and pour water in a thin stream while looking through the water at the sun. Recite 'Om Suryaya Namah' or the Gayatri Mantra. This is done 3 times (traditional).
Red Flowers
Red hibiscus (japa kusum) is the most traditional Surya flower. Red lotus, red rose, red marigold also acceptable. Fresh flowers offered daily at sunrise.
Wheat-Based Sweets
Halwa (wheat + jaggery), gud-atta ladoo, khoya wheat sweets. Wheat is Surya's grain.
Jaggery (Gud)
Traditional Surya sweetener. Never use white sugar for Surya offerings - jaggery only.
Red-Colored Fruits

Copper Items
Copper is Surya's metal. Puja vessels (arghya lota, plates) traditionally copper. Wear copper bracelet, ring, or thread for Surya-related practice.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need copper vessels for Surya puja?
Traditional preference. Modern practice: brass or steel also acceptable if copper unavailable. Copper considered ideal for Surya.
What if hibiscus isn't available?
Substitute red rose or red marigold. Sunday offering focus is on red color + freshness. Sincere offering with any red flower is fully valid.
Can I look at the sun during Surya puja?
Direct sun-gazing is dangerous to eyes. Look at the sun for only 1-2 seconds when first visible; then face East feeling the light. Never stare at sun for extended time.
Do I need to observe strict salt-free on regular (non-vrat) Sunday?
No. Salt-free rule applies specifically to Ravivar Vrat. Regular weekly Sunday puja without vrat does not require salt avoidance.
