In the ritual of Boita Bandana (also called Danga Bhasa), families float miniature boats bearing lamps at first light, honouring the Sadhabas — the ancient Odia merchant-mariners who sailed to Bali, Java, Sumatra and Ceylon. In Cuttack, this same day launches the Bali Jatra, one of Asia’s largest open-air fairs on the banks of the Mahanadi.
