Diwali 2026 Europe: the five days
These dates come from our panchang data for Germany. Diwali (8 November) and Dhanteras (6 November) are the same in every country in our data.
| Day | Festival | Date (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Dhanteras (Dhanatrayodashi) | Friday 6 November |
| Day 2 | Narak Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali) | Sunday 8 November |
| Day 3 | Diwali / Lakshmi Puja | Sunday 8 November |
| Day 4 | Govardhan Puja / Annakut | Monday 9 November |
| Day 5 | Bhai Dooj (Bhaiya Dooj) | Tuesday 10 November |
One small difference: in our data for the UK, Narak Chaturdashi falls one day earlier, on Saturday 7 November. If your temple follows a UK calendar, you may see that date. Check Narak Chaturdashi on Drik Panchang for your own city. In India, Govardhan Puja is on Tuesday 10 November and Bhai Dooj on Wednesday 11 November, so these two days come one day earlier in Europe.

How the Lakshmi Puja muhurat is worked out
The Diwali muhurat is different in every city. It is built from two parts:
- Pradosh Kaal: the period that starts at sunset and lasts about one-fifth of the night. In Europe in November, nights are long, so Pradosh Kaal lasts about three hours (for example, 4:51 PM – 7:46 PM in Frankfurt).
- Sthir lagna (fixed ascendant): the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon keeps changing. Vrishabha (Taurus) is a "fixed" (sthir) sign. Tradition says that when Lakshmi is worshipped in a fixed lagna, her blessing stays in the home.
- The muhurat: the time when Vrishabha lagna is rising inside Pradosh Kaal. That overlap is the Lakshmi Puja muhurat in the table.
The Dhanteras puja muhurat on Friday 6 November is found in the same way. Because sunset and the lagna both depend on latitude and longitude, two cities in the same time zone, such as Berlin and Paris, have very different windows.
Step-by-step home Lakshmi-Ganesha puja
This is a short summary. Adapt it to your family tradition. For the full method with mantras, see our Lakshmi Puja Vidhi 2026 guide.
- 1. Prepare the home: clean the home before Diwali. Draw a small rangoli at the door, using chalk or coloured powder on a mat if the floor is shared.
- 2. Set up the altar: cover a small table with a red or yellow cloth. Place images or idols of Lakshmi and Ganesha. Add a kalash (water pot) with leaves and a coconut if you have them.
- 3. Bathe and dress: bathe and wear clean or new clothes before the muhurat begins.
- 4. Sankalpa: inside the muhurat, light the main lamp and make a short sankalpa (intention) with water, rice and flowers.
- 5. Ganesha first: worship Ganesha first with flowers, kumkum, rice and a sweet.
- 6. Lakshmi puja: offer Lakshmi flowers, kumkum, turmeric, rice, sweets and fruit. Many families place coins or jewellery before her. Chant "Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah".
- 7. Aarti: sing the Lakshmi and Ganesha aarti and offer the lamp to the family.
- 8. Lamps: light diyas safely in the home. Share prasad with family and friends.
Tips for Indian families in Europe
- Diwali falls on a Sunday in 2026. Most families can do the puja at home on the day itself. Dhanteras on Friday 6 November is a working day, so plan a short puja after work.
- In Scandinavia, Finland and Poland the window begins between about 3:45 PM and 4:30 PM. Prepare the altar in the morning.
- Many flats do not allow open flames, and smoke alarms are sensitive. Keep diyas on a metal plate away from curtains, never leave them alone, or use LED diyas.
- Fireworks rules vary by country and by city. Check local rules before buying or lighting anything.
- Hindu temples in many European cities hold Diwali programmes, often on the nearest weekend. Check your local temple's website or notice board for their timings.
- Do not use India's clock times in Europe. Always use the local time for your city.
Frequently asked questions
When is Diwali 2026 in Europe?
Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) is on Sunday 8 November 2026 in Europe. Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November. In our date data for Germany, Narak Chaturdashi is also on Sunday 8 November, Govardhan Puja is on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj is on Tuesday 10 November.
What is the Lakshmi Puja muhurat in Frankfurt or Paris?
On Sunday 8 November 2026 the calculated Lakshmi Puja muhurat is 5:05 PM – 6:45 PM in Frankfurt and 5:35 PM – 7:16 PM in Paris, local time. Please confirm the time on Drik Panchang for your city.
Can I use India's Diwali muhurat in Europe?
No. Lakshmi Puja is tied to Pradosh Kaal, which begins at local sunset, and to the Vrishabha lagna at your location. Converting India's time to European time gives a wrong window. Use the local times on this page.
Why is the window so short in Stockholm, Oslo and Helsinki?
In the far north, Vrishabha lagna rises more quickly, so the time it spends inside Pradosh Kaal is shorter. The window is about 80 minutes in these cities, and it starts soon after an early sunset. Have everything ready before the muhurat begins.
Are these times from Drik Panchang?
No. They are calculated by HinduTone with the Drik method (Pradosh Kaal plus Vrishabha lagna, Lahiri ayanamsha). In our checks against Drik Panchang for other cities, the method matched within one or two minutes. Please confirm the time on Drik Panchang for your city.
What if I cannot do the puja inside the muhurat?
The muhurat is the best time, but the puja is still meaningful if you do it later in the evening. Do the main Lakshmi-Ganesha worship and aarti as close to the window as you can, and follow your family custom.
