Notice that in every city, Purnima tithi ends on the afternoon of Tuesday 24 November, often close to sunset. The festival date is still 24 November, because Purnima is the tithi at sunrise that day. If your family prefers to light the Pournami lamps while Purnima is still running, the evening of Monday 23 November also falls inside Purnima tithi. Ask your priest or local temple which evening they follow, and keep to your family custom.

Sunset times for evening lamps

Sunset matters for evening lamps (Karthika deepam) and for breaking a Somavaram fast. Here are the calculated sunsets on Monday 9 November and Monday 23 November.

Deepam and home rituals in a European winter

Karthika is the month of lamps. In India the evening lamp is lit around 5:30 to 6 PM. In Europe, the sun sets between about 3 PM (Stockholm) and 6 PM (Madrid) in November. This changes how families plan the day.

  • Evening lamp after work: the traditional time is at or after sunset. If you are still at work, light the lamp as soon as you reach home. The sincere offering of light matters more than the exact minute.
  • Morning bath (Karthika snanam): in India devotees bathe before sunrise in a river. In Europe, a warm bath or shower at home before puja is the practical form. Do not bathe in cold rivers or lakes in winter. See Karthika snanam and deepa daanam.
  • Fire safety: use a stable lamp on a metal plate, keep it away from curtains and smoke alarms, and never leave a flame alone. Many rented flats and student rooms do not allow open flames. An LED diya is a respectful alternative.
  • Tulasi in winter: Tulasi plants do not survive European frost outdoors. Keep the plant indoors by a sunny window, or worship a picture of Tulasi on Tulasi Vivah.
  • Simple food rules: many families avoid onion, garlic and non-vegetarian food during the month. See Karthika Masam rules 2026.

Tips for NRI families in Europe

  • Most Karthika days in Europe are ordinary working days. Plan the main Pournami puja for the evening of Tuesday 24 November, or for the nearest weekend if your temple holds a community event then.
  • Indian and Sri Lankan Tamil communities run Hindu temples in many European cities. Check your local temple's website or notice board for Karthika Somavaram abhishekam and Karthigai Deepam timings.
  • If you live far from a temple, a short daily lamp and the chant "Om Namah Shivaya" at home keeps the spirit of the month.
  • Video calls with parents in India work well for Pournami: India is 3.5 to 5.5 hours ahead of most European cities in November, so their evening is your afternoon.
  • Do not use India's clock times for Europe. Always use the local times given here or on a panchang set to your city.

When is Karthika Pournami 2026 in Europe?

Karthika Pournami is on Tuesday 24 November 2026 in all 21 cities. In most of central Europe, Purnima tithi runs from 7:13 PM on Monday 23 November to 3:54 PM on Tuesday 24 November, local time. Dublin and Lisbon are one hour earlier, and Helsinki is one hour later.

How many Karthika Somavarams are there in Europe in 2026?

Most cities have four Somavarams: 16, 23 and 30 November and 7 December. Dublin and Lisbon have five, because their month starts on Monday 9 November.

Why do Dublin and Lisbon start a day earlier?

Dublin and Lisbon are on Western European time, one hour behind most of the continent. The new moon that begins the month falls at a slightly different point relative to local sunrise, so the calculation gives Monday 9 November, as in the UK.

Is Masik Shivaratri on a Somavaram in Europe this year?

No. In our calculation for all 21 European cities, Masik Shivaratri in Karthika falls on Sunday 6 December 2026, one day before the last Somavaram on Monday 7 December. In India it falls on Monday 7 December.

Can I light Karthika lamps indoors in a European flat?

Yes. Use a stable brass or clay lamp on a metal plate, keep it away from curtains, never leave it alone, and check your building's fire rules. Many families use electric or LED diyas where open flames are not allowed.
