Bhai Dooj ends the five days of Diwali. In Canada it falls on an ordinary Tuesday, with work, classes and cold weather. Why Canada's date comes first
Bhai Dooj belongs to Dwitiya, the second lunar day of the bright half of Kartika. The tithi changes at one instant for the whole world, but it falls at very different local times in Canada and India. In 2026, Drik Panchang's calculation gives Tuesday for Canada and Wednesday for India. If you live in Canada, use the Canadian date.
How to do the Bhai Dooj tilak
- Set a thali with kumkum or roli, akshat (unbroken rice), a diya, a sweet, and a dry coconut or fruit.
- The brother sits facing the sister, often facing north or east.
- The sister applies the tilak, adds a few grains of rice, and performs aarti with the diya.
- She prays for her brother's long life and well-being and feeds him a sweet.
- He gives her a gift and his blessings, and promises to stand by her.
- The family shares a meal, ideally cooked by the sister.
Most Canadian families will do this in the evening, after work and school. For a precise window in your city, check Drik Panchang.
The Yama and Yamuna story as commonly told
As commonly told, Yama, the god of death, had not visited his sister Yamuna for a long time. On the second day after Diwali he finally came to her home. Yamuna was overjoyed. She applied a tilak on his forehead, did his aarti and served him a feast. Yama was so pleased that he blessed the day: any brother who receives a tilak from his sister on this Dwitiya would not fear an untimely death. The day is therefore also called Yama Dwitiya.
In another popular version, Krishna returned after defeating Narakasura and was welcomed by his sister Subhadra with a tilak, lamps and sweets.
Siblings apart: students, new immigrants and families across Canada
- Canada to India: Tuesday evening in Canada is already Wednesday morning in India. A call at that time falls on Bhai Dooj in both countries, so each sibling keeps their own correct date.
- Across Canada: Newfoundland is several time zones ahead of British Columbia. If siblings live in Halifax and Vancouver, an early evening call in the West is late evening in the East, so agree a time in advance.
- Do it together on screen: keep a small thali at both ends. The sister does the aarti on camera, and the brother applies the tilak himself. Some sisters apply the tilak to a photo instead.
- Do not convert puja times: if you want a muhurat, each sibling should look up their own city on Drik Panchang rather than shifting India's time.
- Student tip: if you live away from family in a shared rental, invite friends from your community for a small Bhai Dooj dinner. Many students find a sibling-like bond this way.
Gift ideas for a Canadian November
- Something warm: gloves, a scarf or a good winter hat for a sibling facing their first Canadian winter.
- Sweets or dry fruits ordered for delivery in your sibling's city.
- An e-gift card or a book.
- A donation in your sibling's name to a food bank or a cause they value.
- For siblings in India, a delivery service in their city is faster than international post.
Bhau Beej, Bhai Phonta, Bhai Tika: one festival, many names
In Maharashtra and Goa the day is Bhau Beej. Bengali families call it Bhai Phonta and place a mark of sandalwood paste on the brother's forehead; Bengali almanacs may date it differently, so check. In Nepal it is Bhai Tika, the final day of Tihar, with a multi-coloured tika and a flower garland. Telugu families know it as Bhagini Hasta Bhojanam, when the brother eats at his sister's hand. Elsewhere it is called Bhatru Dwitiya or Yama Dwitiya.
