Quick answer: Narak Chaturdashi 2026 Canada falls on Saturday 7 November 2026, one day before India, where it is on Sunday 8 November. This is the Drik Panchang date for Canada, and it applies from Halifax to Vancouver.
In Canada, Choti Diwali on Saturday is followed by Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) on Sunday 8 November, which is the same date as India. So the oil bath and the big Lakshmi Puja night fall on two different days of the same weekend. All dates here are local Canadian dates.

Why Canada keeps Choti Diwali on Saturday
Each Hindu festival is tied to a tithi, a lunar day, and to a particular part of the local day. Narak Chaturdashi is tied to the hours before sunrise, because the Abhyang Snan must be done while Chaturdashi is current. Many panchangs describe this as the time between moonrise and sunrise.
The tithi begins and ends at the same moment worldwide. But that moment lands on a different local morning in Toronto than in Mumbai. In 2026, Drik Panchang's calculation places the Chaturdashi pre-dawn window on Saturday morning for Canada and on Sunday morning for India. That is the whole reason for the difference.
If someone in your family WhatsApp group says "Choti Diwali is Sunday", they are right for India. In Canada, keep it on Saturday.
A warm Abhyang Snan on a Canadian November morning
The Abhyang Snan is the oil bath before dawn. Family members rub warm sesame oil into the scalp and body, use ubtan (gram flour, turmeric and fragrant powders) to clean the skin, and then bathe. Some families wear new clothes afterwards.
- Plan for the cold: early November mornings can be near or below freezing in much of Canada, and the prairies may already have snow. Turn up the heat in the bathroom before you start and keep warm clothes ready.
- Dry indoor air: furnace heating dries the skin. The oil massage helps here, so many families find this ritual especially welcome in a Canadian winter.
- Clock change: most of Canada moves its clocks back on Sunday 1 November, so sunrise comes earlier by the clock than in late October. Most of Saskatchewan does not change its clocks, so check your local sunrise there.
- Weekend advantage: Saturday means no work or school, so children can join in without a rush.
- Slippery floors: oil and tiles do not mix. Use a bath mat and clean the tub afterwards.

Yama Deepam, Hanuman puja and Kali Chaudas
- Yama Deepam: a single lamp facing south, lit in the evening as a prayer to Yama for the family's safety. Some families do this on Dhanteras evening, some on Choti Diwali.
- Hanuman puja: in some North Indian traditions this is a day to worship Hanuman with sindoor, oil and sweets, and to recite the Hanuman Chalisa.
- Kali Chaudas: Gujarati families often mark this night with prayers to Kali or Mahakali for protection. Its date is set by midnight, so confirm it separately.
Many families also light a row of small lamps at the front door on Choti Diwali evening, as a prelude to Sunday's Lakshmi Puja.
Lamps in condos and houses
A large share of families in Toronto, Mississauga, Vancouver and Calgary live in condos and apartments. Building fire codes and condo rules often limit open flames, especially on balconies. Use these simple precautions:
- Keep real diyas on a metal tray, indoors, away from curtains and well below smoke detectors.
- Use electric or battery diyas for windows and balconies.
- Never leave a lamp burning unattended, even for a short time.
- Fireworks rules are set by each municipality and can change. Check your city's bylaw before buying any.
The Narakasura story as commonly told
As commonly told, Narakasura was a demon king who had grown proud and cruel. He attacked the gods and kept thousands of women captive. Krishna, together with Satyabhama, defeated him on Chaturdashi and freed the captives. Narakasura's last wish was that people remember the day with lamps and celebration.
The oil bath is often linked with Krishna bathing after the battle. In South India, many families treat this morning as Deepavali itself, with the oil bath, new clothes and crackers at dawn. Tamil and Telugu families in Canada who follow that custom will have their main Deepavali morning on Saturday 7 November, unless their own panchangam says otherwise.
Frequently asked questions
When is Narak Chaturdashi 2026 in Canada?
Drik Panchang gives Saturday 7 November 2026 for Canada. In India it is Sunday 8 November.
Is the date the same in Vancouver and Toronto?
Yes. Drik Panchang lists Saturday 7 November for Canada, and the date does not change between provinces this year. The pre-dawn window itself is different in each city, so look up your own city on Drik Panchang for the exact time.
Why does Canada observe Choti Diwali before India?
The day is chosen by which morning has the Chaturdashi tithi before local sunrise. Canada is many hours behind India, so that pre-dawn window falls on Saturday in Canadian time zones and on Sunday in India. Follow the Canadian date if you live in Canada.
Is Diwali on 7 or 8 November in Canada?
Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) is Sunday 8 November 2026 in Canada, the same as India. Saturday 7 November is Narak Chaturdashi, also called Choti Diwali.
Can I use India's Abhyang Snan timing in Canada?
No. India's timings are for Indian sunrise and are not valid in Canada, even after adding or subtracting hours. Check Drik Panchang for your Canadian city.
When is Kali Chaudas in Canada?
Kali Chaudas is set by the Chaturdashi at midnight, not at dawn, so it may fall on a different date from the Abhyang Snan. Check Drik Panchang or your mandir's calendar for your city.
