Pune keeps a deeply Marathi Diwali. Akash kandils hang from every wada and apartment balcony, children build clay forts (killa), steel boxes fill with faral, and the city's music lovers wake before dawn for Diwali Pahat concerts. Business families in the old peths worship their account books, and the Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple keeps its own Diwali calendar through November. This guide covers the dates and times, temples, Diwali Pahat, markets, the cracker rules and practical tips.
Editor's note (8 November 2026): puja times are HinduTone's own calculation for Pune. The cracker rules are from the Pune City Police notice published on 23 October 2026, which HinduTone read in the original Marathi. The Dagdusheth dates are from the temple's published festival schedule, and the Diwali Pahat and traffic details are from Punekar News reports of October and November 2026.

How Pune celebrates, day by day
Thursday, 5 November: Vasu Baras. Many Marathi families worship a cow and her calf in the evening, and the first akash kandils and lamps go up. See Vasu Baras 2026.
Friday, 6 November: Dhanteras. Gold, silver and new utensils are bought, and the jewellers of Laxmi Road are at their busiest. Families also worship Dhanvantari and light a lamp for Yama at dusk. The evening puja window is 6:32 PM – 8:31 PM. See Dhanteras 2026.
Sunday, 8 November: Narak Chaturdashi and Laxmi Pujan.
- Before sunrise: abhyanga snan with oil and utane (a fragrant herbal paste). In many homes the bitter karit fruit is crushed underfoot, symbolising Narakasura's defeat. See Naraka Chaturdashi 2026.
- Morning: new clothes, a temple visit, and the first faral of the season: chakli, karanji, shankarpali, chivda, anarse and besan laddu. Recipes are in our Maharashtrian Diwali faral guide.
- Evening: Laxmi Pujan inside the muhurat, 6:25 PM – 8:25 PM. Traders in Budhwar, Raviwar and Shukrawar Peth worship their account books (chopdi pujan) and the new year's ledgers.
Tuesday, 10 November: Diwali Padwa. Balipratipada honours King Bali. In Marathi homes wives perform aarti for their husbands, who give them gifts, and many families buy gold or begin new ventures on this auspicious day. Read the legend of Bali Raja and Diwali in South India.
Wednesday, 11 November: Bhau Beej. Sisters perform aarti for their brothers and share a festive meal, the Marathi form of Bhai Dooj. See Bhai Dooj 2026.
Killa (clay forts): in many Pune neighbourhoods and housing societies children build small forts of mud and stone during Diwali, decorated with figures of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his soldiers, in memory of the Maratha forts around Pune such as Sinhagad, Rajgad and Torna. For the full Maharashtra picture, see Diwali in Maharashtra: Lakshmi Poojan, Padwa and Bhau Beej.
Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati and Pune's temples
The Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple in Budhwar Peth publishes its own festival schedule. For Diwali 2026 it lists:
| Date | At Dagdusheth Ganpati |
|---|---|
| Thursday, 5 November | Vasubaras |
| Friday, 6 November | Dhanteras |
| Sunday, 8 November | Narak Chaturdashi and Diwali Lakshmi Pujan |
| Tuesday, 10 November | Bali Pratipada, Diwali Padwa |
| Wednesday, 11 November | Bhau Beej |
| Saturday, 21 November | Tulsi Vivah |
| Tuesday, 24 November | Tripurari Poornima and Annakot |
| Saturday, 28 November | Diwali Kakada |
Note that Dagdusheth's Annakot is on Tripurari Poornima, 24 November, not on Padwa. Check the temple's website for darshan timings on festival days.
Other temples Pune families visit through Diwali:
- Kasba Ganpati, Kasba Peth: Pune's gramdaivat (presiding deity), the city's oldest Ganesh temple.
- Tambdi Jogeshwari, Budhwar Peth: the city's guardian goddess.
- Chaturshringi Temple, Senapati Bapat Road: the hillside Devi temple, busy on Laxmi Pujan and Padwa.
- Parvati Temple: the Peshwa-era hilltop temples, with views over the lit-up city in the evening.
- Sarasbaug Ganpati (Talyatla Ganpati): the Ganesh temple in the Sarasbaug garden.
- ISKCON NVCC, Kondhwa: Hare Krishna temples usually mark Govardhan Puja with an Annakut offering.
Diwali Pahat: dawn concerts
Diwali Pahat, early-morning concerts of classical, devotional and Marathi music, are a much-loved Pune tradition, held at auditoriums, gardens and temple halls in the days around Diwali. In 2026, for example, Punekar News reported on 5 November that the Vaikunthanayaka Abhangotsav Diwali Pahat would be held on Narak Chaturdashi morning, Sunday, 8 November, from 5:30 AM to 8:30 AM, at the Rama Purushottam Vidyasankul Amphitheatre, Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Sanstha, Karvenagar, with free entry.
Programmes continue on Padwa and Bhau Beej mornings. Check event listings and the organisers' pages for timings and tickets, and allow for traffic and parking near the venues at dawn.
Markets and shopping
- Laxmi Road: clothes, sarees, jewellery and silver; the heart of Pune's Diwali shopping.
- Tulshibaug: puja items, brass and copper utensils, diyas, rangoli colours and household goods.
- Mahatma Phule Mandai: flowers, marigold torans, fruit and vegetables for the festival.
- Kumbharwada and the old peths: clay diyas, idols of Laxmi and killa figures.
- Raviwar Peth and Budhwar Peth: wholesale decorations, akash kandils and lights.
Traffic: Pune Traffic Police withdrew the weekend exemption for heavy vehicles on Shivaji Road and Bajirao Road from 25 October until the end of Diwali, and Punekar News reported on 28 October a daytime ban on goods vehicles entering the central peth market areas until 12 November. Expect congestion around Laxmi Road, Tulshibaug and the Mandai, use PMPML buses or the Pune Metro where you can, and use public parking rather than stopping on the market roads.
Crackers in Pune: the 2026 rules
The Pune City Police notice for 2026, signed by the Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration) and published on 23 October 2026, says:
- Night ban: crackers that make a noise are completely banned from 10 PM to 6 AM. Crackers that only give colour or light, without noise, are not restricted at night.
- Banned outright: atom bombs, crackers louder than the permitted limit, and chains of more than 100 crackers.
- Where not allowed: on public roads, lanes and footpaths, within 10 metres of a road, within 50 metres of a licensed cracker stall, and within the 100-metre silence zones around hospitals, schools, colleges and courts, at any time.
- Shops: temporary sale licences are valid from 6 November to 5 December 2026.
- Green crackers: the police ask citizens to choose green crackers that cause less noise and air pollution.
- Report violations: call 112. For fires, call 101.
Pimpri-Chinchwad has its own police commissionerate; follow its notices if you live there. Full details are in our Pune firecracker rules 2026 page.
Practical tips
- Weather: early November in Pune is pleasant, with cool mornings around 15–17 °C and warm afternoons near 30 °C. Carry a light shawl for Diwali Pahat at dawn.
- Air quality: Pune's air quality often slips after Laxmi Pujan night. Keep children, older relatives and anyone with asthma indoors during heavy bursting, and check the AQI before going out.
- Housing societies: many societies fix a common open area for crackers; follow your society's rules and keep water and sand ready.
- Akash kandils and diyas: use LED lights on balconies; keep oil diyas away from curtains and never leave them unattended.
After Diwali
- Tulsi Vivah: Saturday, 21 November 2026.
- Tripurari Poornima (Kartik Purnima): Tuesday, 24 November, with the Annakot and a lamp-lit temple at Dagdusheth.
