Karthika Puranam Chapter 10 in English: Vasishtha tells Ajamila's earlier life as a greedy temple priest, and how Karthika and the divine name changed his course.

Quick answer: If you read one adhyaya a day from 10 November, Karthika Puranam Adhyaya 10 falls on Thursday, 19 November 2026 in India. If you follow the tithi-based table on our 30-adhyaya guide, read it on Friday, 20 November (Shukla Dashami at sunrise). In the USA, UK and Canada the month began a day earlier (Monday 9 November), so readers there going one a day reach it on Wednesday, 18 November; check your local panchang. Vasishtha tells Ajamila's earlier life and why calling the name changed his course.
Janaka's question and Yama's insight
At the end of Chapter 9, Ajamila was carried to Vaikuntha by the messengers of Vishnu. King Janaka now asks Vasishtha who this Ajamila was, what his earlier life had been, what sins he had committed and what happened next.
Vasishtha begins with Yama's court. Alarmed, Yama's servants report that they went to fetch Ajamila as ordered, but Vishnu's messengers argued with them and took him to Vaikuntha. Yama, surprised, looks into Ajamila's past with his divine sight and understands: at the moment of death the man remembered "Narayana", and whoever remembers the name of Hari, knowingly or unknowingly, is not denied Vaikuntha.
Ajamila's past life: the temple priest
In his earlier life, the chapter says, Ajamila was a priest of a Shiva temple in the Maharashtra country. He was handsome but greedy for money and proud. He gave up the worship of Shiva, stole the temple's wealth, lay with his feet stretched towards the deity, and offered neither incense, lamp nor food. He also carried on a secret affair with the wife of a poor Brahmin.
The Brahmin's wife
While her husband was out begging alms, the woman fell for the priest. One day, when her husband came home hungry, she neglected him; when he struck her with a stick in anger, she seized it, beat him and drove him out of the house. That night she sought out another man, a washerman, who refused her and counselled her to do right, and she went to the priest instead.
In the morning she was overcome with remorse for driving away the husband she had married with fire as witness. She paid a labourer to search for him, brought him home, and by good conduct won back his affection.
Death, suffering and rebirth
The priest wasted away with disease and died, and suffered in the hells. He was then born as the son of a Brahmin named Satyavrata. In that life, bathing in the river and visiting the deity during Karthika wore away his sins, and he was next born as Ajamila, who called "Narayana" at death and reached Vaikuntha.
The woman, too, died of illness and suffered Yama's punishments. She was reborn as a girl in a poor outcaste home. An astrologer warned of danger, and her parents abandoned her in the forest. A Brahmin found the crying baby, took her home out of compassion and had her raised by a servant. It was this girl whom Ajamila came to love.
The chapter's summing-up
Vasishtha draws the moral: meditating on Hari with a clear mind, charity, listening to the stories of Hari and the Karthika bath can lift even a great sinner towards liberation, and those who keep the vow and hear the Puranam in Karthika are said to find happiness here and hereafter. These are the text's teachings, told to encourage devotion.
What this chapter teaches
- Karthika practices carry across lives: in the story, the bath and temple visits of one life prepare the next.
- Remorse and repair matter: the woman's turn begins when she seeks out the husband she wronged.
- Neglect of sacred duty is serious: the priest's fault is that he served the temple without devotion and robbed it.
- Grace answers the name: Yama himself concedes that remembering Hari opens Vaikuntha.
How to read it today
- Pick one time: after the morning bath, or in the evening after lighting the Karthika lamp. Keep the same time each day if you can.
- Light a small lamp: ghee or sesame oil before your home shrine or tulasi. Never leave a flame unattended; in apartments keep it clear of curtains and smoke detectors.
- Read or listen: say that you are reading adhyaya 10, then read it aloud from a Telugu edition your family trusts (about 15 to 30 minutes). One person can read while the family listens; the text praises listening as much as reading.
- Today's small practice: if you can, visit a temple today, or bathe early and sit for a few minutes of quiet remembrance before the lamp. In India, Devutthana Ekadashi (Smarta) falls on 20 November.
- Close simply: offer a flower or a little prasadam, bow and say a short prayer.
Printed editions do not always break the chapters at the same place, so a story may begin an adhyaya earlier or later in your book. If your book differs, follow your book. Our summary is a guide to the day's reading, not the text itself.
Ekadashi this week: Karthika (Prabodhini) Ekadashi 2026.
