Karthika Puranam Chapter 12 (Adhyaya 12) in English: Story, Meaning and Lesson | Karthika Masam 2026 Day 12
Karthika Puranam Chapter 12 in English: the gifts of Karthika Dwadashi, the Salagrama above all, and the story of Dharmaveera. Read on 21 November 2026, Ksheerabdi Dwadashi.

Quick answer: Karthika Puranam Adhyaya 12 is read in India on Saturday, 21 November 2026 (Shukla Dwadashi, which begins at 6:31 AM; families following the tithi read adhyayas 11 and 12 together today), whether you follow the tithi-based table or read one adhyaya a day from 10 November. In the USA, UK and Canada the month began a day earlier (Monday 9 November), so readers there going one a day reach it on Friday, 20 November; check your local panchang. The chapter praises the gifts of Karthika Dwadashi, above all the gift of a Salagrama, and tells the story of Dharmaveera. In India this is Ksheerabdi Dwadashi.
Monday, Ekadashi and Dwadashi
Vasishtha gives King Janaka a set of observances:
- Karthika Monday: rise early, bathe and sip water (achamana), give to Brahmins as you can, fast through the day, worship at a Shiva or Vishnu temple in the evening, and eat only after seeing the stars. The text says this brings fruit in this world and the next.
- Shani Trayodashi: if a Saturday Trayodashi falls in Karthika, the vow kept that day is said to bring a hundredfold merit.
- Karthika Shukla Ekadashi: fast, have darshan of Vishnu and hear the Purana, then feed Brahmins the next day; the text likens the merit to that of countless sacrifices.
- Karthika Shukla Dwadashi: the day Sriman Narayana rises from his serpent bed, and so dear to Vishnu. Giving a cow with its calf is called the highest merit, and giving a golden tulasi or a Salagrama is said to bring an emperor's reward.
The chapter also says that lamps given on Karthika Pournami and Pratipada destroy the sins of past lives. All of these are the Puranam's teachings, told to encourage devotion; they are not promises.
The story of the Salagrama gift
On the bank of the Godavari lived a rich merchant (vaishya) who loved money, gave nothing and coveted others' wealth. When a Brahmin who had borrowed from him at interest asked for a little more time, the merchant killed him in anger. For that sin he became a leper and, after death, fell into hell.
His son, Dharmaveera, did good works and earned merit. The sage Narada came and told him that to free his father he should give a Salagrama on Karthika Dwadashi. But Dharmaveera thought little of the gift and did not make it. As a result, the chapter says, he passed through many births as a pig, an ox, a tiger and a monkey.
At last he was born as a girl in a poor Brahmin home and was widowed while still young. Her father, understanding the cause through divine insight, had her give a Salagrama in gift. By that merit her husband was restored to life, the two lived long and happily, and in time she attained liberation.
The chapter's message is that giving a Salagrama on Karthika Shukla Dwadashi is a gift of the highest merit, which tradition holds can wipe away the sins of past lives.
What this chapter teaches
- Do not belittle a sacred act: Dharmaveera's long wandering begins with thinking the gift too small.
- Greed has consequences: the merchant's refusal to give and his violence are the root of the story.
- Dwadashi is Vishnu's day: the waking of Narayana makes this Dwadashi a day for giving.
- A family can help one another: a father's guidance brings his daughter to the gift that frees her.
How to read it today
- Pick one time: after the morning bath, or in the evening after lighting the Karthika lamp. Keep the same time each day if you can.
- Light a small lamp: ghee or sesame oil before your home shrine or tulasi. Never leave a flame unattended; in apartments keep it clear of curtains and smoke detectors.
- Read or listen: say that you are reading adhyaya 12, then read it aloud from a Telugu edition your family trusts (about 15 to 30 minutes). One person can read while the family listens; the text praises listening as much as reading.
- Today's small practice: if your family worships a Salagrama or keeps Ksheerabdi Dwadashi, read this adhyaya after the evening puja. Otherwise make a small gift today, food or a lamp, in the spirit of the chapter.
- Close simply: offer a flower or a little prasadam, bow and say a short prayer.
Printed editions do not always break the chapters at the same place, so a story may begin an adhyaya earlier or later in your book. If your book differs, follow your book. Our summary is a guide to the day's reading, not the text itself.
Today's festival: Ksheerabdi Dwadashi and Tulasi Vivah 2026. Fasting forms and health advice: Karthika Somavaram upavasam rules.
