Karthika Puranam Chapter 11 (Adhyaya 11) in English: Story, Meaning and Lesson | Karthika Masam 2026 Day 11
Karthika Puranam Chapter 11 in English: the wayward Brahmin Manthara and his devoted wife, whose Karthika Pournami lamp and Purana-listening freed him and three others.

Quick answer: If you read one adhyaya a day from 10 November, Karthika Puranam Adhyaya 11 falls on Friday, 20 November 2026 in India. If you follow the tithi-based table on our 30-adhyaya guide, read it on Saturday, 21 November, together with adhyaya 12 (Shukla Ekadashi at sunrise). In the USA, UK and Canada the month began a day earlier (Monday 9 November), so readers there going one a day reach it on Thursday, 19 November; check your local panchang. Vasishtha tells the story of Manthara (not the Ramayana character) and teaches the worth of hearing the Purana.
Flowers, reading and hearing
Vasishtha tells King Janaka that the glory of the Karthika vow can never be told enough. He says that worshipping Vishnu with flax (avise) flowers in this month brings the fruit of the Chandrayana vow, and that reading, hearing and reciting the Purana for others after worshipping Vishnu leads devotees towards Vaikuntha. These are the text's teachings. To illustrate them he tells an old story.
Manthara of Kalinga
Long ago in the Kalinga country lived a Brahmin named Manthara. He worked as a cook in other people's houses and ate there; he drank and ate meat and kept none of the disciplines of bath, japa or lamp worship. His wife, by contrast, was devoted, gentle and of good conduct. She knew his faults, yet served him as the husband given to her and lived by remembering the name of Hari.
In time Manthara tried a small trade, failed, and turned to robbery, frightening people and taking their money. One day, as he was robbing a Brahmin, a hunter came and killed them both and took the money. A tiger then came at the hunter; he killed it, but with its paw the tiger killed him too. So four lives ended in killing, and all four reached Yama's realm and suffered there.
The wife's Karthika Pournami
After Manthara's death his wife spent her days in devotion to Hari. One day a sage came to her home, and pleased by her humble service, taught her the path to liberation. That day was Karthika Pournami. As he told her, she cleaned the temple, made wicks, filled the lamps with oil and lit them, and spent the whole night in the temple listening to the Purana. She lived devoutly from then on, and when her time came, Vishnu's messengers took her to Vaikuntha in a celestial chariot.
Sharing the merit
On the way she saw Manthara suffering in Yama's realm. She begged the messengers to save him and the other three as well. They told her: give the merit of the lamp wicks you made on Karthika Pournami to the tiger, the merit of your lamp offering to the hunter, and the merit of hearing the Purana to the Brahmin, and all will be freed. She gave away all her merit, and the four were taken to Vaikuntha.
Vasishtha concludes that those who offer lamps and hear the Purana in Karthika gain great merit and the fruit of liberation. As with every such line, this is the Puranam's teaching.
What this chapter teaches
- Hearing the Purana is itself a practice: the wife spends Pournami night listening, and that merit frees the Brahmin.
- Small acts carry weight: even the wicks she rolled are counted as merit to be given.
- Merit is meant to be shared: she gives all of hers away, even to those who harmed each other.
- Steadfast devotion endures: the wife's quiet remembrance of Hari runs through a hard life.
How to read it today
- Pick one time: after the morning bath, or in the evening after lighting the Karthika lamp. Keep the same time each day if you can.
- Light a small lamp: ghee or sesame oil before your home shrine or tulasi. Never leave a flame unattended; in apartments keep it clear of curtains and smoke detectors.
- Read or listen: say that you are reading adhyaya 11, then read it aloud from a Telugu edition your family trusts (about 15 to 30 minutes). One person can read while the family listens; the text praises listening as much as reading.
- Today's small practice: roll a few cotton wicks for the lamps you will light on Karthika Pournami (24 November in India), and let someone else in the house listen as you read.
- Close simply: offer a flower or a little prasadam, bow and say a short prayer.
Printed editions do not always break the chapters at the same place, so a story may begin an adhyaya earlier or later in your book. If your book differs, follow your book. Our summary is a guide to the day's reading, not the text itself.
Planning ahead: Karthika Pournami 2026.
