Quick answer: Diwali 2026 in Guwahati is on Sunday, 8 November 2026. Because Guwahati is so far east, the sun sets early, at about 4:37 PM, and the Lakshmi Puja muhurat is 5:02 PM – 6:58 PM IST, calculated by HinduTone with the Drik Panchang method. Guwahati celebrates Diwali with earthen lamps on every veranda, Lakshmi worship at dusk and Kali Puja late into the night, a blend of Assamese, Bengali and North Indian traditions. Homes and shops are lit with rows of saki (clay lamps) and candles, community committees set up Kali Puja pandals, and devotees climb Nilachal Hill to the Kamakhya temple. This guide covers the dates and times, Kali Puja, temples, markets, the cracker rules and practical tips.

Editor's note (8 November 2026): puja and Nishita times are HinduTone's own calculation for Guwahati. The cracker rule is from earlier Pollution Control Board, Assam guidance reported by The Sentinel; we have not found a 2026 order.

Crackers in Guwahati: what applies

As of 8 November 2026 HinduTone has not found a 2026 order from the Pollution Control Board, Assam or the Guwahati police on cracker hours. In earlier years the board:

  • allowed crackers only from 8 PM to 10 PM on Diwali night, the same as the national rule under the Supreme Court's 2018 judgment;
  • allowed only green crackers to be sold and bought;
  • ran noise and air monitoring in Guwahati in the weeks around Diwali.

Follow the same rules this year unless a new order says otherwise: green crackers only, 8 PM to 10 PM, from licensed shops, and never near hospitals, schools or temples. For emergencies call 112, and for fire 101.

Practical tips

  • Early evening: sunset is around 4:37 PM, so the evening lamps and puja start much earlier than in North India.
  • Weather: early November in Guwahati is pleasant, around 16–27 °C, with cool evenings.
  • Air quality: Guwahati's air has turned poor after Diwali in past years; keep children, older relatives and anyone with asthma indoors during heavy bursting.
  • Kamakhya: expect long queues on the Amavasya night; go early and use the official entry routes.

After Diwali

  • Raas Purnima (Tuesday, 24 November): the Raas festival of Lord Krishna, celebrated across Assam and most grandly on Majuli. See Raas Purnima 2026.
