Ranchi celebrates Diwali as a festival of lamps, Lakshmi worship and Kali Puja, with Bengali, Bihari, Marwari and Jharkhandi traditions side by side. Homes are lit with diyas and fairy lights, families perform Lakshmi-Ganesh puja at dusk, and the city stays out late visiting Kali Puja pandals. In the villages around Ranchi, adivasi communities celebrate Sohrai, the harvest and cattle festival, around the same time. This guide covers the dates and times, Kali Puja, temples, the cracker rules and the festivals that follow.

Crackers in Ranchi: what applies

According to a City24x7 report of 4 November 2026, the Pollution Control Board has barred bursting crackers after 10 PM, with police and administration watching residential areas, markets and crowded places. We have not found a separate 2026 order fixing a start time, so the national rule is the safe guide:

  • Timing: 8 PM to 10 PM on Diwali, under the Supreme Court's 2018 judgment.
  • Type: green crackers only, from licensed shops; no barium or joined "series" crackers.
  • Where: not near hospitals, schools, courts and places of worship, and not on roads or near fuel stations.
