Quick answer: Bhai Dooj 2026 UAE falls on Tuesday 10 November 2026, one day before India, where it is on Wednesday 11 November. This is the Drik Panchang date for the UAE, the same in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and the other emirates.

UAE families often assume they share India's dates, and this year they mostly do: Diwali is Sunday 8 November in both. But Bhai Dooj, like Govardhan Puja, comes a day earlier in the UAE. Tuesday is a working day under the UAE's Monday-to-Friday week, so plan the tilak around office and school hours.

Why the UAE date is a day early

Bhai Dooj is celebrated on Dwitiya, the second lunar day of Kartika's bright fortnight. Each lunar day starts at the same instant everywhere, but the UAE's day runs about an hour and a half behind India's. Usually that makes no difference. In 2026 the change of tithi falls close enough to the deciding point that Drik Panchang's calculation gives Tuesday for the UAE and Wednesday for India. Use the UAE date if you live there.

Tilak vidhi on a working Tuesday

  • Arrange a thali: kumkum or roli, akshat (whole rice grains), a diya, sweets and a coconut or fruit.
  • The brother sits facing his sister on a low seat or cushion.
  • She applies the tilak, adds a few grains of rice, and performs aarti.
  • She prays for his long life and happiness, then feeds him a sweet.
  • He gives her a gift and his blessing.
  • If you can, share a meal cooked by the sister in the evening.

In a flat, keep the diya on a metal tray and away from smoke detectors, as many buildings have sensitive alarms. For an exact time window, check Drik Panchang for your city.

The Yama and Yamuna story as commonly told

As commonly told, Yamuna invited her brother Yama, the lord of death, to her home again and again. On the Dwitiya after Diwali he finally came. She received him with a tilak, an aarti and a lovingly cooked meal. Yama was so moved that he gave a blessing: any brother who receives a tilak from his sister on this day need not fear an untimely death. That is why the day is also called Yama Dwitiya.

Another version tells of Krishna visiting his sister Subhadra after his victory over Narakasura, and her welcoming him with a tilak and sweets.

Siblings in India and across the Gulf

For many UAE families, a brother or sister lives in India, often only a short flight away. The small time gap makes long-distance Bhai Dooj easier than from almost anywhere else.

  • Two short calls: call on Tuesday, your Bhai Dooj, and again on Wednesday, India's Bhai Dooj. Since the clocks are so close, both calls can be at a comfortable hour on both sides.
  • Tilak on screen: keep a thali ready at both ends. The sister does aarti on camera; the brother applies the tilak himself. Some sisters apply tilak to a photo.
  • Siblings elsewhere in the Gulf: if your brother or sister lives in Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait or Saudi Arabia, check their local date on Drik Panchang too; neighbouring countries can differ.
  • Keep timings local: do not convert India's muhurat into UAE time. Each sibling should check their own city.
  • Visiting home: if you are flying to India for Diwali week, note that your family there will celebrate on Wednesday 11 November, so you can join them on their date.

Gift ideas

  • Sweets or dry fruits from a local Indian sweet shop, or ordered to your sibling's door in India.
  • Gold or silver: many UAE families buy jewellery around Diwali, and a small coin or pendant is a traditional sibling gift.
  • A watch, perfume or a book.
  • A gift card or a donation in your sibling's name.
  • For siblings in India, use a delivery service in their city rather than post.

Bhau Beej, Bhai Phonta, Bhai Tika and other names

The UAE's Indian and Nepali communities use many names for the same day. Maharashtrian families say Bhau Beej, and Gujarati families Bhai Beej. Bengali families celebrate Bhai Phonta with a sandalwood mark on the forehead; Bengali almanacs may date it differently, so check. Nepali families keep Bhai Tika, the last day of Tihar, with a multi-coloured tika. Telugu families call it Bhagini Hasta Bhojanam, and in many places it is Bhatru Dwitiya or Yama Dwitiya.

Frequently asked questions

When is Bhai Dooj 2026 in the UAE?

Drik Panchang gives Tuesday 10 November 2026 for the UAE. In India it is Wednesday 11 November.

The UAE is only about 90 minutes behind India. Why is the date different?

Bhai Dooj is kept on Kartika Shukla Dwitiya. When the tithi changes close to the deciding point of the day, even a short time gap can move the festival to another date. In 2026 that puts the UAE on Tuesday and India on Wednesday.

My brother is in Kerala and I am in Dubai. Which day should we celebrate?

Each of you can follow your own date: Tuesday in the UAE, Wednesday in India. Because the time gap is small, it is easy to call on both days so each of you shares the other's Bhai Dooj.

What is the tilak time for Bhai Dooj in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

We do not give a clock muhurat. Check Drik Panchang with your emirate's city selected. India's timings do not apply in the UAE.

Is Tuesday 10 November a holiday in the UAE?

No. It is a normal working and school day, so most families do the tilak in the morning before work or in the evening.

Is Diwali on the same day in the UAE and India?

Yes, Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026 in both. Only Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj come a day earlier in the UAE this year.
