Saraswati (Sanskrit: सरस्वती) is the Hindu goddess of knowledge, wisdom, learning, music, arts, poetry, and eloquence - the consort of Brahma the creator. Traditionally invoked at the start of any learning journey, artistic pursuit, or intellectual endeavor, Saraswati represents the sacred power of vidya (knowledge) - which Hindu tradition considers the ultimate wealth greater than material treasures.

The Meaning

Saraswati literally means 'she who flows' - originally associated with the sacred river Saraswati (which has now largely disappeared but continues to flow underground per tradition). Her name evolved to represent flowing wisdom, flowing speech, flowing music, flowing creativity - all the arts and sciences that flow like a river from generation to generation. She is the goddess of everything that involves the flow of knowledge.

  • Beautiful serene woman seated on a white lotus (purity of knowledge)
  • White skin/complexion (sattva - purity, clarity)
  • White or yellow sari
  • Four arms - holding a veena (musical instrument), book (Vedas/scriptures), mala (prayer beads), and often making blessing mudra
  • Vahana (mount): white swan (hamsa) - representing discrimination between real and unreal
  • Sometimes seated with a peacock nearby (representing beauty and pride to be transcended)

Saraswati and Brahma

In Hindu cosmology, Brahma the creator uses the wisdom of Saraswati to design and create the universe. Without her wisdom, Brahma's creation would be chaotic. Together they represent the creative principle - creation itself (Brahma) and the wisdom that gives creation its order and beauty (Saraswati). She is thus called Vagdevi (goddess of speech), Sharada (giver of learning), Bharati (of Bharata), and Vinapaani (holder of veena).

Vasant Panchami - Saraswati's Great Festival

The 5th day of the bright half of Magha month (January-February) is Vasant Panchami - Saraswati's birthday and the traditional welcome of spring. Observances:

  • Yellow clothing worn (color of spring, learning, prosperity)
  • Saraswati Puja in schools and homes
  • Children traditionally begin their learning (aksharabhyasam) on this day
