Falling on the Purnima (full moon) of Phalguna month, it celebrates the triumph of Bhakti over arrogance through the story of Prahlada and Holika — the demon-prince devotee of Vishnu whose unwavering faith brought down his rakshasa aunt's curse — and welcomes the arrival of spring (Vasanta Ritu) across the subcontinent. In Vrindavan and Mathura it specifically celebrates Lord Krishna's gopi-lila with Radha, immortalised in the phaag songs that play through every Holi-eve gathering. King Hiranyakashipu obtained a boon that he couldn't be killed by man or beast, day or night, inside or outside. His son Prahlada was a Vishnu devotee, which enraged him. His sister Holika, immune to fire, took Prahlada into a bonfire; Prahlada's faith protected him, Holika burned. Vishnu then incarnated as Narasimha to kill Hiranyakashipu.
On Holi-eve, communities build a bonfire pyre with wood, dry leaves and an effigy of Holika. After sunset (during Pradosh Kaal), priests or elders perform a brief puja with cow-dung patties, coconut, sweets and gulal, then light the fire. People circumambulate the fire 3 or 7 times, offering kachha sutra/garlands.
