Vaishno Devi Temple in Katra, Jammu & Kashmir, is one of the most visited pilgrimages in India. Choosing the right time of year makes the trek and darshan far more comfortable — especially for NRI families travelling from the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and the GCC. Here is a month-wise guide.

Best Time to Visit — Month by Month

  • March–April: pleasant weather, comfortable trek — among the best times.
  • May–June: hot at the base and crowded — less ideal.
  • July–August: monsoon; heavy rain and possible landslides — best avoided.
  • September–October: clear, pleasant weather; a good time despite festival crowds.
  • November–February: cold (snow possible at the top) but fewer crowds — best for a peaceful darshan; carry warm clothing.
  • Navratri & Diwali: beautiful but extremely crowded — only if you’re comfortable with very long queues.

Quick Recommendation for NRIs

  • Most comfortable weather: March–April.
  • Most peaceful (fewer crowds): November–February (dress warm).
  • Festive atmosphere: September–October.
  • Best avoided: peak summer and monsoon (May–August).

Planning Your Yatra

  • The trek is about 12–13 km one way from Katra; ponies, palki and battery cars cover parts of the route.
  • A helicopter service (Katra–Sanjichhat) saves time and suits elderly devotees and families — book in advance on the official Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board website.
  • The Yatra Parchi (registration) is mandatory — done online or at Katra.
  • Book hotels in Katra early during peak season; carry warm clothes in winter and comfortable trekking shoes.

Useful Tips

  • For shorter queues, aim for early morning or late evening darshan.
  • Carry water, light snacks and any regular medicines; the altitude and walking need reasonable fitness.
  • Many NRIs combine Vaishno Devi with the Golden Temple (Amritsar).

Note: helicopter fares, yatra rules and timings change — always confirm on the official Shrine Board website before you travel. See also our complete Vaishno Devi NRI guide for booking and darshan details.
