The legend of Padmavathi and Srinivasa
Tiruchanur, on the outskirts of Tirupati, is also known as Alamelumangapuram, the town of Alamelu Manga, the lady of the lotus. Its presiding deity is Sri Padmavathi Ammavaru, worshipped as Goddess Lakshmi and as the consort of Lord Venkateswara (Srinivasa) of Tirumala.
As traditionally told, when Lakshmi left Vaikuntha, Lord Vishnu came to earth in search of her and settled on the Venkata hill as Srinivasa. Lakshmi was reborn as Padmavathi, found as a baby on a lotus by the king Akasa Raja, who raised her as his daughter. Srinivasa met the princess while hunting in the forest, and the two were married with great ceremony. For the wedding, Srinivasa is said to have taken a loan from Kubera, the god of wealth, which devotees say he is still repaying through their offerings at Tirumala.
Another strand of the tradition explains Tiruchanur's own sanctity. The Lord performed penance on the banks of a lotus tank here, and on the Panchami (fifth day) of the bright fortnight in the month of Karthika, Goddess Lakshmi appeared in a golden lotus in that tank, the Padma Sarovaram. This is why the Brahmotsavam closes with the holy bath on Panchami, and why Panchami Theertham is the most sacred day of the festival.
Vahanas: the order TTD followed in 2025
TTD has not yet published the 2026 vahana schedule. The table shows the morning and evening order from 2025, as a pattern only. The 2026 schedule is expected - TTD will announce the official schedule. Note that the 2026 festival spans 5 to 14 December, so the day numbering may not match 2025 exactly.
| Day (2025 pattern) | Morning | Evening |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Dhwajarohanam | Chinna Sesha Vahanam |
| Day 2 | Pedda Sesha Vahanam | Hamsa Vahanam |
| Day 3 | Muthyapu Pandiri Vahanam | Simha Vahanam |
| Day 4 | Kalpavriksha Vahanam | Hanumanta Vahanam |
| Day 5 | Pallaki Utsavam | Gaja Vahanam |
| Day 6 | Sarvabhoopala Vahanam | Swarna Ratham and Garuda Vahanam |
| Day 7 | Surya Prabha Vahanam | Chandra Prabha Vahanam |
| Day 8 | Rathotsavam | Ashwa Vahanam |
| Day 9 | Panchami Theertham | Dhwajavarohanam |
As in the Tirumala Brahmotsavams, each vahanam carries meaning. The Sesha vahanams show the Goddess honoured by Adisesha, the Hamsa stands for discernment and knowledge, the Simha for strength, the Kalpavriksha for the Mother who gives all that is good, and the Gaja recalls the elephants that, as traditionally told, bathe Lakshmi in her Gajalakshmi form. The Garuda Vahanam night, when the Goddess rides her Lord's own carrier, is one of the most attended evenings of the festival.
Panchami Theertham at Padma Sarovaram
On the last morning, the Goddess is brought to the Padma Sarovaram for the Chakrasnanam, the holy bath of the Sudarshana Chakra in the tank. At that moment thousands of devotees take a dip, believing that bathing in the tank as the Chakra is immersed washes away sins and brings the Mother's blessings. The festival flag is lowered in the evening (Dhwajavarohanam).
Because this is the busiest day, TTD's 24 September 2026 review planned four holding points mainly for Panchami Theertham, along with queue lines, barricades, LED screens, medical camps, traffic management and electrical decorations. Source: TTD News
The Sare from Tirumala
A much-loved custom, as commonly described, is the Sare (also spelt Saare), the gifts the Lord sends to his consort on Panchami Theertham day. Silk vastrams, turmeric, kumkum, ornaments and other offerings are brought down from the Tirumala temple to Tiruchanur in a ceremonial procession, often with an elephant leading, and are presented to the Goddess before the holy bath. Devotees see it as Srinivasa honouring Padmavathi, and the arrival of the Sare is one of the moving moments of the festival.
Visiting Tiruchanur: practical tips
- Many pilgrims follow the custom of having darshan of Goddess Padmavathi as part of a Tirumala pilgrimage, either before going up the hill or after coming down.
- For Panchami Theertham, expect very large crowds from early morning. Families with elders or small children may prefer an ordinary festival day or the telecast.
- If you plan to bathe in the Padma Sarovaram, carry a change of clothes and follow the volunteers' instructions at the holding points.
- Dress traditionally, keep your valuables minimal and agree a meeting point with your group.
- For darshan timings, check the temple's official website, TTD's official online booking portal or the official TTD app. Do not rely on agents. In August, TTD Vigilance caught a broker using forged Aadhaar cards to book rooms for resale (TTD news, 17 August 2026).
- Combining with Tirumala? TTD released the December 2026 Tirumala darshan and accommodation quotas in September, with Rs 300 Special Entry Darshan opening on 24 September (TTD news, 12 September 2026).

For NRI devotees
Goddess Padmavathi is worshipped in many Venkateswara temples abroad, often in her own shrine beside the Lord, and some hold special abhishekams or Lakshmi pujas in this season. If you cannot travel, SVBC (Sri Venkateswara Bhakti Channel) traditionally carries the Tiruchanur Brahmotsavam vahana sevas and Panchami Theertham live. Times are India Standard Time, so convert them to your own zone. At home, a lamp, a lotus or other flowers, turmeric and kumkum, and the Sri Suktam or the Lakshmi Ashtottaram make a simple offering to the Mother on Panchami Theertham day.
